University fellows program

Son got a call while we were out of town, inviting him to apply to the university fellows program. He had previously gotten a letter inviting him to apply as well.

He has applied for the regular honors and the computer based honors program.

I’m assuming the university fellow requires a separate app.

I believe the deadline is Dec 4th, and I don’t know that we can get a lengthy app done before then.

Is this a program one can apply as an undergraduate, or is it only open to entering freshmen?

montegut, this requires 2 essays and an optional letter of ref (lor must be postmarked by dec 1 and signed across the seal) once you have submitted the honors app, the fellows app is below it in my bama… the essay questions should appear if honors app is done…other wise the essay questions are on the letter of invitation. the fellows is a great program, very selective. of the people selected another subgroup will be chosen for academic elite scholarship.

As far as I know, you can only apply to UFE as an incoming freshmen.

And according to my DD, once you start the online application, you have to finish it then. Since the essays are so important, your DS will probably want to do the essays in a word document, then paste them in once they open the online application.

So, if son gets the two essays written and submitted online by Dec 1, he’ll make the deadline? Don’t know if we can get a teacher rec done by Dec 1st. Are you sure the letter of rec is optional? Can it be submitted after the Dec 1st deadline?

dec 4th for essays, 1st for lor…go to the fellows link and i think at the top it mentions letter of ref (optional)

^^
very true…

Since Mrs. Bridgers also emails the essay prompts to those who need them, using a Word doc to initially write the essays is a big help.

Apply!

One can only enter the program as a freshman, and I still kick myself for not applying when I was sent an application.

Teacher rec is optional and due date is Dec 1st for that.

Letter of recommendation (optional, limit of one). The letter must be placed in a sealed and signed envelope and mailed by December 1, 2009 to:
Ms. Wellon Bridgers
University Fellows Experience
Box 870169
Tuscaloosa, AL 35401

The student’s portion is due… Application Deadline is December 4.

If you know of a teacher that might write one, can your child send that teacher an email tonight with the request?

that’s what we did. sent it last night. apologized for asking so late and not asking in person.

teacher replied this morning that he would get it done ASAP.

: )

Talked to teacher last night. Glad to do it. Thanks for the address.

Is there a specific form that the teacher needs to send out as well?

Will get her an addressed envelope with a cover letter that the letter needs to be in a signed and sealed envelope.

Does the student fill out his portion online and how does he get to the application?

Thanks for all your help.

I think the application is on MyBama, click the Academics tab, then scroll down on left column. I think the Fellows app link is near the Honors College link.

Found it. Thanks so much for your help.

Can the rec be sent online or via email? Just wondering.

pixel

Since you’re out of the country, I would send an email to Mrs. Wellon Bridgers asking if an email rec would be ok for the sake of time.

UA does have office hours tomorrow, but I don’t know if she’ll be in tomorrow.

Bumping up this post and hoping can get some more info on the University Fellows program.

Is anyone who posts here actually a participant in this program?

Where do the fellows live, ie, a specific dorm or floor of a dorm?

Has anyone taken advantage of the internship and service opportunities available to Fellows?

fellows don’t live in any particular dorm or floor. Since fellows are in various years, they are all over - including some off-campus.

Apply for it. It’s a great opportunity which I am very aggravated that I passed up.

Apply for Fellows, the worst they can say is no. Apparently, Fellows students also get their own lounge in Nott Hall. If one was in both Fellows and CBHP, they would have access to two lounges (Honors and Fellows) and the CBHP lab, all in Nott Hall. Fellows students are the ones that UA expects to win all the major awards, though any UA Student can apply for them (USA Today All-Academic Team, Goldwater, and Truman Scholars).

I think UA expects both CBHP and Fellows students to win recognition awards.
