University of Edinburgh International Relations

Hey guys ! Help needed ! I have passed out from high school ( this is my drop year)
I am an Indian student , and want to apply to Edinburgh , can I do it now??
And yes will submitting my SAT scores help me increase my chances?
Do UK universities give importance to extra curriculars or Social services as US universities do?

Hi! Unis in the UK in general don’t look at your extracurriculars AT ALL. For them, academic performance is the most important factor in deciding your acceptance. They won’t even ask about it in the application.

Will you be applying once you return to high school or would you like to apply now?

Since there is a 5 course limit in UCAS. Can you submit separate UCAS statements to each university? Or is it just 1?

@cricket123 - I would like to apply now :slight_smile: Is that possible ?

@sami914,
I’m not sure, I’m sorry.

@perfectprashant,
I’m not sure about your particular situation. I suggest you email their admissions office and inquire as to whether or not your application will be considered/you are eligible for admission as you have not yet completed high school (from what I udnerstand).

These pages might help:

@Sami: I’m pretty sure you need to do just one UCAS app. Besides, it’s cheaper that way. :D

@perfectprashant: Do you mean that you’re on a gap year? If so, yes you can apply now, as long as you’ve graduated from high school. To be on the safe side, email your admissions counselor, but you should be able to. You can put your SAT scores if they help you, but just make sure you have all the Indian qualifications too.

You can only submit one UCAS form so you can only write one personal statement which is seen by all thr unis you apply to. Therefore it’s a good idea NOT to write “I want to study at uni X because…” if you have applied to more than one uni.

You can apply while on a gap year. Thousands of students do. In fact you can apply at any time from the year before you complete high school onwards. There is not separate application for older students.

ECs are generally irrelevant to UK admissions unless they are very specifically relevant to the course of study you are applying for. This usually means career-specific work experience. eg students applying for medicine often do lots of volunteering in hospitals. Hiwever, if you do something such as appear in your school play and you are applying for English, you could add a line about this in your personal statement as proof of your ongoing interest in the subject. The personal statement should be mostly about who academic you are. No personal journeys. No public service. Just “I want to study subject Y because…”. Very factual is best.

thankyou cupcake for the information !! So now , I am preparing to apply to Edinburgh !! yipee!

Best of luck perfectprashant! :)

Hey, I’m an American student thinking about applying to Edinburgh but I have a few concerns. First and foremost, I come from a high school that really doesn’t push AP classes at all. The school only offers like…6 and I’ve taken one. (and the only reason I took it was because it was the only social studies class that fit into my schedule) I want to go into Bio with either a double major or just a kind of focus on Chinese as well. I have pretty good test scores (SAT 1, 2190. 760 CR 720 Math 710 writing SAT 2 770 in Mandarin and 720 in Math 2) Do AP classes have a big impact on their decision? I’ve taken a ton of extra classes I’ve just stayed away from APs as the format of the class really bothers me (i.e. rushing through interesting material to prep for a final test. No fun. I want to learn)

Anyway, this has turned into a paranoid paragraph. Basically, do you think I have a good shot? Or is the lack of AP classes really an issue (it has been with a few other colleges I’ve applied to)…Thanks

Why you couldn’t have just goggled this I don’t know, but here is Edinburgh’s entry requirements. If you don’t meet the entry reqs then no you don’t have a good shot.

PS: If you’re a native speaker of Mandarin I doubt they will accept your SAT score in it.

I did google it an found the same information you did but those are the bare minimums. The page that I got that information from (I assume the same one that you found) says that these are just minimums and applicants almost always exceed the requirements. I wasn’t asking for a list of the minimum requirements but rather about the weight that AP classes hold in making a decision. And I’m not a native speaker so I hope Mandarin counts for something :D

Well, according to the university’s undergraduate prospectus: “international applicants who meet or are predicted to meet the minimum entry requirements are likely to be made an offer.”

Are AP courses offered at your school? If they are not, I doubt they would hold a lack of AP exam scores against you.
