University of Hong Kong Reputation/Prestige

It'd be great if anyone on here can give me their objective opinion of HKU and it's reputation in Hong Kong, Asia and abroad. My major is business and I've been accepted to a fairly selective program there. Ultimately, I'd like to work in Asia (ie. China) which is why I've turned down all my offers from the US because a degree from HKU would provide me with a better network/internships.

I know it's well known in HK but it's reputation abroad becomes a bit iffy depending on who I talk to. The reason I ask this is because I'd like to maintain some sort of flexibility should I decide to not work in Asia and take up a job in the US or UK in the future. I'd like my degree to count for something.

So what do you think?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

HKU is very prestigious in Hong Kong, but people in Hong Kong doesn't really care which schools do you come from, ie. the graduates from CUHK, HKUST and HKU almost receive the same amount of salary or advantages.

If you want to work in China, I suggest you to apply some Chinese University, such as Qinghua, or Beijing Univerisity.

ps. I came from HK. =]

I've visited Chinese University and it isn't really my cup of tea ;). The rude staff and interviewers I met really put me off and made me question why CUHK was so well regarded.

I've basically cancelled out all the Mainland Chinese universities because I need the language of instruction to be in English and well...Mainland China doesn't appear to be a fun place for college.

I've spoken to a few people about HKU and they all tell me that HKU has the most diverse student body so that's another reason why I'm going. I just hope that it's prestige extends a bit further than Hong Kong and Asia.

Anyone else on here have an opinion?

Are you serious? HKU is not even considered the best business program in HK. That honor belongs to the Global Business program at HKUST. No, it's not considered prestigious outside of HK, certainly not in the same caliber as the flagship universities in Japan, Korea or Singapore. And your network is rather ineffective if you want to work in mainland China ... for that, you should go to Qinghua or Beijing.

Just curious, which US universities did you turn down?

PKU and THU are not that good as you thought.
Just remain yourself in HKU. It's cool.

Well if test scores are any indication, HKU's Global Business accepts the best students of Hong Kong (this is their claim, not mine). I do understand that HKUST has a well regarded business program, in fact, overall it's probably better than HKU (especially their GB) but I want to go somewhere and meet people outside of the business department and HKU seems to offer the most diverse student body. HKUST is up and coming but I'd also like to go somewhere that's well established and has a bit of history in the region.

I did get into a few respectable business programs in the US (nothing overly spectacular) but I'd rather not go into detail as I don't want this thread to turn into a "you should've did this or that" guilt trip.

Just looking to see if there are other opinions on HKU.

EDIT- I checked the THES rankings and HKU is ranked 10 in universities outside of Europe and North America and 41th worldwide. That has to count for something right?

I live in Europe and have heard about Hong Kong University and was told it was the best in HK.

Yup.
HKUST's Business programs are really good and very famous both locally and internationally.

bump...anyone else have a comment or opinion?
