University of Michigan 2023 waitlisted applicants

I sent one on May 31st and the reply I got from my region counselor is better than what I got from other schools. The other school I sent to (a while ago) had an automated response which pretty much said “Thanks, but we won’t take this into account.” Whereas U-Michigan sent a non-automated response (or seemingly non-automated response) which essentially said “Thanks. Noted.” (Of course, it wasn’t just two words but that was the core of it.) I suggest sending to your region counselor which you can find online because they do the holistic approach which means they will pull people from demographics/states where they need so I think it will be up to the regional counselor. Also, only (s)he will know what the awards you got actually mean anyways since (s)he is in charge of the region (e.g. states science fair award or competition. Of course if you awards are national or international level then that’s another story.)

Got an email earlier from UM Admissions starting with “congratulations!”… only to read it and learn it was UM Dearborn congratulating my HS graduation and asking me to apply.
Anyone else get baited?

Talk about a roller coaster of emotions. Interesting if others got that also.

Got the same email with a link to Orientation

My S has received many pieces of mail from UM-Flint as well as a recent email from Dearborn.

If I were in the Admissions office at one of those schools and I knew there was a list of several thousand well-qualified, already-vetted students who had all expressed a desire to ditch their current choice for U-M, I sure as heck would be sending them invitations, too! I wonder what the response rate is.

The WL process this year is late and kind of weird. My guess: three possibilities

  1. the enrollment is similar, and they just delayed the process, They may end up take hundreds on the WL,
  2. the enrollment is higher than expected, class is full. They may take dozens to fill the summer melt, dropouts by committed students.
  3. the class is over-enrolled heavily. they can not take anyone, and may announce for the closure of the WL.

Hope for the best, No 1.

Yes, very weird year.

UCLA and Cal have taken students from their waitlist already and may actually close their waitlists before UMich even opens theirs, assuming they do.

@sushiritto do you think there is any way we could guess when the last day Michigan would release the waitlist decisions would be? I assumed it would be before the season ticket sales closed, but maybe that’s wishful thinking. They continuously say by the end of June, but what does that even mean? Does it mean sporadic decisions will be released until the end of June or none will be released until the end of June? Such a weird year.

Our regional AO sent a reply to our LOCI from early May that we’d hear from UM by end of May/beginning of June. So slightly different messaging than party line end of June. FWTW

Most schools already close the WL by end of June. No sure what is the thinking of Umichigan? For the benefits of both the school and students, the decision should be released as soon as possible. Many schools start accepting from WL on May 2nd. Not sure why it takes so long for UMich?

IIRC, there was a waitlist offer and acceptance around the July 4th holiday last year. So, when they say “by the end of June”, I would believe them.

There is technically no impact since students would have deposited at a uni they were accepted by May 1. If you are someone that can turn on a dime and a few waitlist offers come out this summer then so be it. The waitlist is not a given. And a waitlist is not a deferred decision.

Guys, this is what I got after submitting my LOCI:

Thank you for your email and your interest in the University of Michigan. This email is to acknowledge the receipt of your letter. Please note that you do not need to continue submitting supplemental materials, as we will have plenty of information on file to consider your application in the event we select students from the waitlist.

Sincerely,

Office of Undergraduate Admissions

Does this mean that they’ve at least read it? Or it was completely disregarded? Thank you for answering.

It means they got it and sent you a form template letter. No more or no less.

Will something happens this week?

Maybe something today/tonight at 11:59/12. Cause it’s a Friday?

Maybe @joelen09. Maybe. Instead of checking at midnight tonight though, people should just wait for an email to show up and be pleasantly surprised if they receive an admission offer.

The number taken from the waitlist could be so small this year (1-2% of those on the waitlist) that those admitted may not even post here and we’ll never know.

I’m not saying that it means much, but the language used here makes me skeptical of them going far into the waitlist

“in the event we select students from the waitlist.”

Accepted!! OOS LSA off the waitlist

My daughter was just accepted as well. In-state. We are in shock!
