@allycat231 The FA office said the package will start rolling out in the next couple weeks somewhere around early Feb. No fixed date has been disclosed yet.
I completed the Net Price Calculator with my dad the other day and it straight up said I would have to pay the full OOS cost of attendance…really nervous about financial aid. How accurate is NPC?
@quackunited It’s disappointing when you hope for financial aid but find out that you don’t fall within the eligibility guidelines. If that’s what the NPC said, you have your answer. Unless you made errors inputting the data in the NPC, you’re not going to get more than what it said. Many times students get less than what NPC says, but rarely more. How much were you hoping to get?
@brantly I am not sure what you mean getting less or more. We did see better aid at the end with more grant than the original NPC without changing the EFC. This is also not that rare, but one should not expect any big changes.
@Benzene42 It depends on the school you applied to, and it may be on the website if you do some digging. For example, I applied PA to Ross, and their website said any time between February and April. There probably won’t be any set dates as it depends on volume and quality of applicants and things like that. Good luck!
@billcsho My prognostication is that IF she cannot afford full price, and IF the NPC said she will get nothing in financial aid, it would be extremely unlikely that that NPC result would be incorrect to the extent that it would make a material difference in her ability to afford the school.
Unless she made a big error in inputting the data, she’s not going to find out that she’s getting a full tuition grant, making it so much more affordable. If the NPC result was wrong to the extent that she’ll get a small grant – say, $5k – that would be nice but hardly makes it more affordable if she cant afford full price.
@brantly I do agree the NPC provides a good estimate as long as the data are correct and the family does not have a complicated situation. But I do disagree what you said that the actual aid would get worse and rarely get better. It may go up and down a little bit and quite often they increase the grant to reduce loan in the revised package in summer after more than half of the admitted students declined the offers.
Ah – I see what you mean. I guess what I was trying to say is that students often do not get as generous a package as is indicated in the NPC because the mistake more often goes in that direction – that the student didn’t enter certain assets, or the parents are in a business and the college won’t allow certain deductions that are in the tax return. I would think it’s rarer that a student or parent filling out an NPC would OVER estimate their own wealth and income.
Now I see what you mean too.
@brantly I was hoping for anything, i can not afford $62k a year. My parents have told me that despite their $100k+ income that they won’t be able to help me at all, but I know FAFSA doesn’t understand that my EFC is practically 0. I was at least hoping for subsidized student loans. I’m just worried that after 4 years of hard work to get into this school i still won’t be able to go cause of $$$ problems
@quackunited You should have checked the NPC before applying. That should be the most important criteria to pick a school to apply… A financial reach school is worse than a reach school. Or you are turning a dream school into a nightmare… Most students cannot afford OOS public schools and need to attend in state colleges.
@quackunited Your parents are not contributing one cent toward your college education? Do they have anything saved for this?
Your EFC is not “practically zero” if the NPC said you would not receive aid. EFC is term that refers to the result of a federal formula. It is not the amount that your family wants to pay. When you filled out the Fafsa, what was the EFC that it calculated?
The maximum student loan you are permitted to take freshman year is $5,500, regardless of whether it is subsidized or unsubsidized. Have you applied anywhere that gives financial awards based on merit?
@quackunited If I understand, you are saying that regardless of the calculated EFC, your parents are not willing to pay any part of it. Knowing that, hopefully you have been working and saving what you can.
I am not suggesting taking out more loans, but here is a source of options beyond the traditional issuances to help you understand how it works.

I recommend calling the Financial Aid office and having this candid conversation them with - before FA letters are sent out. If they accepted you, they want you. Give them a chance to help you make it to campus. They are a wealth of information.

Has anyone else noticed their ‘decision’ tab is gone now from the Application Status page?
@UMhopeful12 - My son applied to LSA and was also deferred. His portal still shows an active view decision link.
I also applied to LSA and deffered and my decision tab is still there.

Honestly, it’s so difficult to get in from out of state even with high stats, good essays, good extracurriculars, etc These kids have done everything they could and should be proud of themselves! They will go where they’re meant to be!
does anyone know if it’s possible to change the intended major on the application?!?!?!?!
@collegebound1212 Intended major does not matter.
