University of Michigan Ann Arbor Class of 2022 Early Action

All…I posted this several weeks ago and many members jumped all over me for it, but I will do it again…look through the posts from last year and this year…I challenge you to find 5 credible posts (not someone who has posted only once) where someone claims to have been denied. Doubters wrote “people who are denied admissions don’t typically post” or “this is a self-selected group of high achievers, so none would be denied”. For other schools, members who are denied post their denials. So I guess we can all draw our own conclusions. In my OOS private, nationally-ranked high school in northern, New England (NOT bragging, but trying to help people rationalize), 15 kids applied and there were only deferrals. Most kids who applied had better stats than me and my SAT and ACT were in the 99%. My point, my conclusion is that the great majority of those NOT admitted applicants are deferred and not rejected. Anyone else believe this? Has anyone been denied?

Accepted in-state. 2.4 GPA and 21 ACT. Asian Female

has anyone who has been accepted received an e-mail yet?

I believe you @finnb
To say that no one would post rejections is wrong. Not just last week I was talking about my rejection to Notre Dame, and even in Boston College’s thread, despite my obnoxious acceptance posts, others still posted of their rejection. Yet here, no one. You must be right.

Just got deferred from LSA after my status updated under credentials to “Recent Grades Prior to Mid-Feb - Notified” and then at around 7 it changed to “Recent Grades Prior to Mid-Feb - Second Notification”. The portal still doesn’t display my decision.

tbh i was expecting to be denied so i am thrilled (not really but sort of am at the same time idk lol) because Michigan is my dream school so I still have a chance !!

Deferral email:
Thank you for your freshman application to the University of Michigan College of Literature, Science, and the Arts for Fall 2018. After an initial individualized and comprehensive review of your application, we have determined that we will need additional information in order to make a final decision. We will not re-evaluate your application file until after our regular decision deadline of February 1, 2018. We need this additional information and time to ensure that we give your application the best possible review. We will notify you of a final decision on your application by early April.

The quality of grades earned in academic courses is one of several critical factors taken into consideration in evaluating a student’s competitive admissibility. To give your application a final evaluation, we will need any recent grades that are available before mid-February 2018. If your counselor sent the initial School Report for your application through The Common Application online portal, they will need to complete the 2017-2018 MidYear Report using the same method. If your counselor sent your Current Transcript for your application through the Coalition Application online portal, you will need to request that they send your Mid Year Grades from the Official Documents section of your Coalition Application locker. Otherwise, please ask your high school counselor to have a PDF of your grades sent from the issuing institution to our office via an e-transcript vendor or to transcripts@umich.edu, or they may fax a report of these grades to our office at 734-936-0740.

Congrats to everyone that was accepted!! Go blue!!

Am I reading too much into the 2 different deferral emails? The first mentions being “still under review” and the second says something like “no decision will be made till the RD deadline”. Is that a glimmer of hope for people that got the first?

I have not @lukethedog1

is it true there are two types of deferrals?

It looks like there are two different deferral letters that applicants have received, but I don’t know if that amounts to different types of deferrals.

Yes, it appears there are 2 different deferral letters

Got my Decision on the portal around 3:03 EST. 5 Hours later still don’t have an email… anyone else?

No email yet either.

same no email

@garyman16 same here I was deferred tho

no email from the school, but went to the portal and accepted!

I’m hoping the email says more than the portal! The portal offered nothing more than a congratulations (of which I wanted to see!) but literally anything offering more depth would be welcomed.

I was accepted with a 1420 SAT and 34 ACT OOS congrats to everyone!!

Agreed yikesyikesyikes. Michigan is no longer a safety, or even a target, for high stats OOS applicants. It is, as you aptly pointed out, slightly less of a reach than its smaller private peers, such as Penn and other fellow elite universities, but it is still a reach. Too many high stat applicants assume Michigan is a safety and are shocked when they are deferred.
