University of Michigan Class of 2023 - Deferred Applicants

I literally can’t wait anymore! Feb. 1 was so stressful and my friends birthday party I was the buzzkill checking their portal every two minutes

Remember only some of them disappear. Wait until midnight tonight and hope for the best. If nothing, it just means you have the same chances opposed to if there was a wave and you didn’t hear anything.

Question about Ross admissions: I understand that one must be admitted to LS&A before Ross can consider the application. And I know that Ross has published specific dates upon which it will be notifying candidates of the decisions. Is it possible that the admissions office decides to admit a candidate to LS&A and passes the file to Ross for decision with an admission notification on March 1st even though the candidate hasn’t yet been notified of his/her decision to LS&A (and that the notifications would essentially occur simultaneously)? Has that occurred in the past? Thank you!

so still not a single tab disappearance?

at this point, I think they’re sticking to their first of the month release days… sucks though because some have been waiting months for a decision and are waiting to hear back in order to make final decisions and commit

I agree. If some people hear on March 1, it will have been over three months since being deferred, which sucks.

That is how Universities improve their rankings. Its weird admission process. They have no idea what they are doing. On twitter they replied to me on 26th Jan that no results would be out before end of march. Yet they released few admission results on 1st Feb.

Even if I am offered admission, I would think several times before joining. Had applied in October 2018 and still waiting.Mid-year report reached them before mid-Jan, 2019.

Already offered admission in 7 State universities, even rolling ones. But Michigan is by far the weirdest.

Had submitted LOCI in Jan, 2019. Have highest possible grades as a High School Senior.

Of all the colleges, UoM admissions treats their applicants the worst, especially out of state candidates. I know many very highly qualified applicants who were deferred in recent years and then ultimately got in, but they were so turned off by the way they were treated by UofM admissions that they chose to go elsewhere. I really think Michigan loses many great candidates by jerking them around. Every other college is much more clear about when decisions will be released. Anyway, for those who were deferred and have not yet heard, you still have a great chance to get in if your credentials are in line with the normal averages. Most applicants have not yet been admitted, especially the out of state kids. March 1 (or around then) will likely be the day for the next wave. I highly suggest that everyone just enjoy your senior year and don’t even check the portal… your email will come soon enough. Have an awesome and fun President’s Day weekend!

To all, Michigan only promises you will have decision by Mid April. This is stated in your deferral letters. They are very clear about this. Yes, it is frustrating to wait but once you are deferred you are then RD candidate. There are not anymore EA candidates.

Many OOS have been accepted. Keep in mind this website is just a microcosm of the real world.

Just hang in there, you should all know soon. March 1st is most likely the next big wave. Yes, their will be smaller amounts of acceptances here and there…

The only people I know that got accepted late and didn’t go to Michigan are ones that didn’t get enough money in financial aid. Everything else you hear is just noise.

As stated in your deferral letters start looking at your other options also.

I feel for everyone but they couldn’t of been clearer.

Good Luck.

Here is the information on deferral students. They state you will know by Mid April. It is very clear. They do releases so many don’t have to wait that long. This is their process from start to finish. Click the tab “information for the deferral student”.

Again, good luck.

Newsflash to those complaining about the timing of decisions: Many schools release RD decisions in the second half of March and several release in early April.

This is normal. It has nothing to do with when you applied or submitted a mid-year report. If you hear any time before end of March, you are ahead of the game. Applicants who were deferred from ED or SCEA/REA at any Ivy League school do not get a decision until 3/28.

Even if I am offered admission, I would think several times before joining. My LOCI and MId-Term report reached before mid Jan. Other Ivy league Schools do give a date and nothing is released before that date, so it is still better. Saying the release would be before early April is very vague specially when the releases are taking place in bits and pieces.

UCLA and Cal (Berkeley) state that admission decisions will be made before April 1. Most of the UC’s are somewhere between March 1-31. Notre Dame? By late March. Once deferred by UMich, you’re considered an RD applicant.

Also, the pattens of admission releases IMO are well-established: 2/1, 3/1, 4/1 (+/-) and then mid-April. Fridays at Midnight EST. Of course, there are years where they deviate from the pattern, but Umich appears on pattern this year, just like last year. BTW, UMich decisions may continue to leak out for a few into May and June.

It’s not just the timing of the decisions that Michigan handles poorly, but it’s the fact that it has Early Action and then rejects almost no one yet defers almost all of the out of state candidates, even ones with absolutely off the charts stats. It’s those deferrals I am mostly referring to. And I do know a little bit – my daughter is a current UofM student and she had been accepted EA 3 years ago. We are from NorCal. My nephew, from SoCal, had amazing stats and was deferred. He got in, of course, but he was so offended to have been deferred that it turned him off. He chose Cal (which he may have chosen anyway). I know another similar student who originally had Michigan as his first choice but was so offended by the deferral that he chose to go to Northwestern. Where we live, money is no object. Students go where they want to go without regard to cost. I know several others who chose USC over Michigan, and of course Cal and UCLA…and obviously if they get into Stanford or an Ivy League they go there. I even know someone who chose University of Washington over Michigan, and someone else who chose University of Oregon over Michigan (but that one was because of financial aid). Don’t get me wrong – I think Michigan is an awesome school and my daughter loves it. But I do think they handle the admissions process poorly, especially if they want to attract the highest quality out of state students.

BTW, my son recently received this message from Cal (UC Berkeley): “While you may have heard that a few applicants received notification of their decision, we are still reviewing the majority of freshman applications.Freshman decisions will be released approximately late afternoon / early evening (Pacific time) on March 28, 2019.”

He received a similar notification from UCLA.

This type of simple and courteous correspondence is all Michigan would need to do to help make their process more transparent and professional…

I posed a question yesterday that has received no reply. Now that we have accepted that there will not be a wave this weekend, this question is more critical for my DS who desperately wants Ross:

I understand that one must be admitted to LS&A before Ross can consider the application. And I know that Ross has published specific dates upon which it will be notifying candidates of the decisions. Is it possible that the admissions office decides to admit a candidate to LS&A and passes the file to Ross for a decision with an admission notification on March 1st even though the candidate hasn’t yet been notified of his/her decision to LS&A (and that the notifications would essentially occur simultaneously)? Has that occurred in the past? Thank you!

you not “joining” will really show them! They are dealing with 65,000 applications or so. And they make it clear that you may not hear until April. Learning a bit of patience will serve you in your future career.
