University of Michigan Class of 2023 - Deferred Applicants

Jdelira…

Did you apply EA and at first get deferred?

How did you learn you got accepted today? Did you receive an Email? What did it say?

Curious to hear from anyone deferred EA that has since learned they have now been accepted. If you could share your scenario?

Thanks Much

Hmmm…1st post. Always a little suspect.

I’m going to re-post again, one of my earlier posts (#915) about the stats from last year’s (Class of 2022) 3/02/18 “wave.” Again, limited sample size of about 15-20 students who posted their stats:

Congrats Jorge,

Thanks for sharing. Interesting how Michigan rolls out acceptances of deferred students.

As others get accepted could you share if you were accepted into the Honors College or recurved any Merit consideration as well.

D is hopeful as U of M is at the top of her list.

Good Luck to All

Congrats Jorge! I am so excited for you! For those who are still waiting, hang in there! It’s worth the wait, so I was told. Right now UMich is my daughter’s top choice but still waiting for a few places with better weather :-). Even so she might chose UM anyway as she learns to love this school so much.

COE with an ACT of 27 and got an email today? Hmmmmm :^o

I actually spoke with my “I’ve never been to the snow” CA kid today and the Ann Arbor weather was discussed. It’s sunny and 37 degrees today. According to my kid, the UMich weather is “over-blown fake news.” And that’s coming from a “weather-wimp.” :-j

Here in the SF Bay Area lately we’ve been waking up to 32 degrees, though no snow. So, it’s whatever you want to make of it.

 I am glad your kid is fine with Michigan weather - did she/he ever complain when they first started there?

This year though, I saw so many pictures with frozen lakes, frozen hair from Michigan. So i guess it has an impact. Maybe if the acceptance came during the summer time, the weather factor wouldn’t be weighted heavily? Out of sight out of mind mentality? LOL

I lived in the bay area for 6 years. Both hubs and I graduated from UCB and we loved the bay area. SF is always cold in the morning and at night, but there are many more nice days than Michigan. I am secretly hoping she doesn’t get to UCB, but she gets in UCLA instead (It would be hard to say no to UCB). Visiting her in LA would be more fun than in Michigan, do you think? lol. Berkeley is so cut throat I would rather her a better college experience than I did. Anyways sorry for the rambling.

My brother is a student. I can tell you, this winter has been brutal. Sidewalks sheets of ice, freezing cold, lots of snow, windy. No fake news here!
The past 2 winters, not as bad.

As I said above, it’s all about your state of mind. UMich has 40,000 students who must be able to at least tolerate it. My kid called the weather “overrated.” Not to brag or anything, but my kid is tough! :ar!

The choice of UMich for my kid was pretty easy. We love Ann Arbor, it’s one of the few quintessential college experiences around the country, if that floats one’s boat. Everything is right there. No one goes to Cal games and you have to hop on a bus to get to Pasadena to see the Bruins. There’s not much like attending a pregame party and walking to the Big House on game day, with 110,000 spectators. ESPN’s Game Day came to Ann Arbor for the Wisconsin game. ESPN’s Game Day is unlikely to be coming to UCLA or Cal anytime soon. :))

As for academics, UCLA is 19, UCB is 22 and UMich is 27, according to USNWR. They’re all difficult and competitive, but we all have a different set of criteria for picking a college.

The weather is even worse if you live on north campus and most of your friends are on central! -my boyfriend, a sophomore at umich

Although there have been instances of fake information posted in the past, consider the reality that umich sends out decisions at different times. PLEASE be kind to others! Imagine that you were accepted, you post trying to be helpful, and people conclude that you’re lying or it’s suspicious. Be kind and supportive (it’s not hard)!

Congratulations, Jorge!! @Jdelira

@letsgoblue1234. I agree but there have been others that with a first post and out of range stats were found out not to be real… FYI.

The point is we shouldn’t assume anyone lied until there is reason to believe they have a motivation to do so. Jorge seems honest IMO and if anything he should be celebrating his acceptance with the rest of the 2023 class. U of M is a great school and Jorge has the opportunity to appreciate that.

Bravo.

There is far too much focus on point in time stats to suggest that any one individual is any less likely to be accepted because they don’t measure up or that another is more likely to be deserving.

I am old but long ago I could test with the best but I had many circumstances that kept me from ever fully realizing my potential. I applaud those kids each school finds along the way who deserve that chance to succeed in spite of life’s challenges that might not reflect on or realize in their true potential and value to society.

So many kids deserve so much but there are only so many limited opportunities. My advice is to always create as many good opportuinties as possible in life to improve ones chances.

Be Sincere. Be Honest. Be Happy.

@J123D123 As I said earlier, call me skeptical. The acceptance posted above was by a 1st time poster with stats outside the range for LSA, let alone CoE. No mention of in-state or OOS.

And as an FYI, there are 4,163 slots last year for LSA, 1,363 for CoE. So, the difficulty factor for CoE is higher than LSA.

Lastly, no other acceptances were recorded today here on CC. Jorge’s acceptance was the only one. I’ve looked through several years of posting data and a stand alone acceptance is usually within a few (3-4) days AFTER a “wave.” I don’t recall a stand alone acceptance before an expected “wave” began, which we think will take place on Friday 3/1.

Quoting one of my favortie lines from a movie, “Those are the facts. And they’re indisputable.” :))

I tried to upload a link to show the screenshot of my wolverine access but It didn’t upload.

You have a small and limited sample set with which to work. You have zero inside information on how the school decides on outliers. Your argument only takes into effect what you have pulled together and clearly is not representative of all the facts. One example of an instance does not mean it cannot have happened if you look back and don’t see it in your limited past.

You find it unacceptable so you wish to exclude Jorge from your reality principle as a lie. Yet Jorge appears to have no malice and appears happy to be accepted by the University of Michigan. Yet challenged to prove it. Why?

The question in my mind is why are you so troubled by what easily could be true and someone else’s good fortune. Why do you feel the need to challenge or question someone who has no apparent alterior motive. Why are you so threatened by someone else’s reality and good fortune.

@J123D123
If you hang around college acceptance threads a while, you’ll see it happens often enough that people set up fake accounts to ■■■■■ anxious students and parents who are waiting for decisions. I guess it gives them a thrill.

I literally posted this a couple of weeks ago…

I do hope our friend Jorge is sincere, and wish him well. However, I will always be skeptical under these conditions (new account, acceptance timing and stats out of sync with the school). And I think it’s fair to mention it, so people don’t get too excited that results are being released.

MANY people read posts without becoming a member. Just because your first post is an acceptance doesn’t make you a liar. If everyone who was accepted looked the same on paper, that would make for a really boring and homogeneous class of students.

I also find it interesting that so many parents are the ones posting on this site. And secondly, there are parents who don’t even have a student applying this year who are posting. Time to let go parents. Let us handle this ourselves. Congrats Jorge. I hope to see you on campus this fall!
