University of Michigan Deferral Thread EA 2020

OK- thx. Just strange. My middle daughter goes to UM and her class (2013) all heard at the same day, March 1. This time they are all waiting… I am going to have to stop overthinking this.

@michmich01. We’re in CT and haven’t heard yet.

@WallTitan117 , though you heard from UM yesterday, here’s a hearty congrats- felt your anticipation vicariously!

Unless I’m mistaken, it sounds like the post-December announcements came in waves on Feb 5th, Feb 26th, and March 4th for the most part. When our S got deferred, we were unaware that admission announcements would resume in Feb and assumed that a status update wouldn’t occur until April (I guess we took the deferral letter’s date too literally. . .)

So, our S was pleasantly surprised on March 4th when he received an email saying that he got into LSA! I suppose ignorance is bliss in a sense: since we all thought that he wouldn’t find out till April 1st at the earliest, he hadn’t been constantly checking his WA status.

If it’s any help to those that are still waiting, here is his info:

  • deferred in Dec (deferral letter was the version that didn’t say anything about advocating on his behalf)
  • UW GPA: 3.998
  • W GPA: 4.215
  • ACT: 31
  • Bio M SAT: 790
  • APs: 8 (four of which he’s taking senior year)
  • ECs: Global Learner’s Initiative, community service, internship
  • LORs: 2 from teachers (he assumes one was great, other unknown), 1 from academic adviser (probably good), and 1 from his internship (great)

He never got around to sending in a letter of continued interest- he was considering sending something in after his 1st semester grades were submitted but he received the admissions notification before he could. For what it’s worth, his cumulative W GPA went up (from 4.163 to 4.215) after his first semester senior year grades while his UW GPA went down from 4.0 to 3.998- not sure if this played any part one way or another. I think likely not- they simply have so many good students apply, it almost seems like a crap-shoot after a certain point. His senior grades included an A- which I believe is the lowest he’s had in HS (and why his UW GPA went down)- I only mention this because if you’re looking at trends, this means he technically went down but because it was an AP course, his weighted GPA still increased.

To those that are still waiting, all the best! As you can see from our S’s stats, he’s a good student but didn’t necessarily crush the ACTs or have a million ECs. He does write very well, however, so I’d like to think that someone somewhere liked his essays, so if you wrote something that’s memorable & heartfelt, perhaps it will help.

To those that got in, congrats! We will wait on financial aid decisions as well as other university announcements (all done by 4/1) for his final decision.

As many have said, there’s no pattern to the announcements, however, they do appear to be mostly on Fridays- and, if my observation is correct, @danloeb seems to have the inside scoop on info. If so, expect the next major wave, at earliest, 4 weeks after March 4th which would be April 1st. Again, all the best to everyone!!

Congratulations to your son, @812pacificon.

Yeah, I have been lurking here for awhile now and do realize that decisions only come out in waves on Fridays. However, when I got my email, on March 6th, a Sunday, I was very surprised. On March 4th, I checked Wolverine Access and my email vigorously, and I got nothing. Apparently I’m a deviant from 99% of the other applicants.

Thanks @Winky1! I wish the best to you and your son if he hasn’t heard back yet. I stumbled across this thread today when looking into why we heard back in March and not in April as anticipated. Again, I had no idea that universities (or at least this one) released admission announcements piecemeal in “waves”- as this is a new experience for us with our eldest, we thought everyone heard back on the same day. Yes, that’s interesting @WallTitan117 - you must be one of the few non-Friday recipients!

Hey guys! Congrats to everyone who got in so far. I’ve been deferred early action and it seems as though I’m going to have to wait another couple weeks to hear my final decision. My friend, however, heard back on Friday with an acceptance. He applied to the school of arts and letters, yet has significantly lower stats than I and got in. I applied to the school of business. Will my chances be significantly lower than his just because I indicated on my application that I want to apply for the school business? Also, if I’m as well qualified as he is, is there a chance I could just get into the school of Letters, Arts, and Sciences without getting into the Ross School of business?

@812pacificon , thank you. My son was accepted Feb. 5th after an initial deferral. I am rooting for the amazing students still waiting for their decisions! I value his acceptance more and more and am realizing how difficult it can be to be accepted to U-M. Ironically, my son is very calm and is totally ok with waiting to hear from the rest of his RD schools and then for the financial aid packages!

Two of my son’s classmates got accepted yesterday. It appears that they are making decisions daily and that they aren’t just releasing them on Fridays. So keep checking your WA. Congrats to all who’ve been accepted and good luck to everyone still waiting!

wow good to know they’re releasing on other days and not just Friday’s. Makes me have a little more hope!

Has anyone from Kinesiology heard back yet?

I haven’t seen a lot of posts for Kinesiology. I’m still waiting to hear as well.

Has any international heard back from COE? I got deferred from EA . Have been waiting ever since for a decision release. Any Idea when it might be?

@Winky1 congratulations to you and your son!! That’s fantastic and you’re absolutely right: getting into these places is very difficult- much more so than when I attended university (way back in the stone age, ha). So, every time someone says they got in, it’s another victory! All the best to everyone here~

@Rahulbarcafan same… all this waiting is killing me :((

Will there be another batch of decisions before April?

when will the next batch of decisions be coming out? ive heard they usually release them on fridays

I know that I’m not one to talk since I have already been admitted but I can say that I applied August 4th since I was so excited and did not hear back until March 4th, that’s 7 months! I completely feel everyone’s pain and I just want to wish everyone the best of luck because I truly sympathize with all waiting to hear still. My advice would be to go about your normal lives and to not check wolverine access daily. After being deferred I stopped checking and decided randomly at 11:30am on March 4th to check and I was pleasantly surprised! Do not let this consume your life.
Congrats to all so far, I hope I see you all next fall. To all those still waiting, the end is near and I’m thinking of all of you!

@coffee18 did you not get an email about it?

Has anyone heard from Kinesiology? Or a group? I haven’t heard much from that department. Also, when is the next wave and when is the final wave? This is agonizing…Thanks!
