University of Michigan Deferral Thread EA 2020

I don’t know where you get the info. Students who compare FA packages are looking at the total cost, not just need based aid. At UMich, 70% of in state students and around 50% of OOS students received financial aid. Not to mention there are more who want aids but not receiving any.

@hailbate yes one could argue that, but one would be wrong. I’m not feeling personally affronted. I’m feeling that 20,000 kids haven’t heard back yet and almost all of them are getting rejected. In my opinion anyway. There is no reason to wait on those decisions. No other similarly situated school out East where I am from or in the Big Ten where I applied has waited this long for rejections to go out. You’re right, it sucks. But it is also unnecessary.

How do you know 20,000 kids haven’t heard back? Where are you getting this information from? How do you know that this is unnecessary? Have you worked in admissions for a school that gets over 55,000 applicants per year? How could you possibly know what is going in at the admissions office, headed by professionals who have done this for years? I get you’re frustrated, but come on, this is all a bunch of speculation. You would be better off taking a few deep breaths and recognize that this will all be over in a week or so. Getting angry at Michigan is unproductive and doesn’t make sense: they tell you when you apply that you may not hear until early April. It is not April yet.

Hey I was wondering, has any LSA deferred applicants heard back yet? Only engineers and music seem to have heard back at my school (its in-state and fairly large)

I am engineer and havent heard back yet.

Also not all engineers, but it seems that the kids that have heard back were not LSA kids, so it makes me wonder if they release most of them April 1st

Someone from my school got in last Friday. So I guess there were a few decisions but definitely not the final wave.

It may be interesting for future classes to look back on this thread to see if there is a connection with the type of deferral letter those of us waiting received. It has been controversial whether or not they mean anything- Those of us still waiting: which did you receive? My daughter received the so called “good deferral” mentioning family ties. I’m trying to be positive, but I think she will be waitlisted…

@Dreamville I was deferred LSA and was accepted on March 4th. I’m the only one in my school to have heard though. I have a class of about 350 and about 20 of us were deferred

Does anybody know if any students were accepted in the final wave last year or was that just mostly waitlists and rejections? Also, has anybody gotten rejected or waitlisted yet?

@michmich01 I don’t believe the slightly different letters have any meaning. If you look at last year’s thread, you’ll see that many people got offers in late March.

@klingon97 Thanks- I do know some got in, but most were waitlisted/rejected. I was wondering if those who got in last year got the “good” letter, or “not as good” letter. They probably don’t mean anything, but there has been a lot of speculation…

@michmich01 Don’t forget–all this speculation comes from applicants that are just as clueless as you. So take all the speculation with a grain of salt. Good luck. I hope you get in.

At my son’s school, I know of 7 kids who applied. Two got accepted in December, two more a couple weeks ago, but not in the last big wave, it was during an “off” week. Three are still waiting, including my son. My sons stats and ECs are about the same or better than 3 of the 4 accepted. The other two deferrals had lower test scores, but the same grades and ECs as my son. One is a legacy. All great kids and strong applicants from a highly competitive public school in state. I only wish I had known when he applied EA that the “decision” that most EA applicants get in December is deferral. In my naivete I assumed it meant a yes or no, as did many of us I think. He rushed his application to get it in by Nov 1 and now in hindsight I wish he would have waited and taken more time on his essays and obtained more letters of recommendation. He may have been a stronger candidate had he done that. He had never intended on applying to U of M as it was too cost prohibitive and he knew he was a good candidate, but not a great one. It was only when he received a letter encouraging him to apply as he would qualify for the new HAIL scholarship that he thought he had a chance and went ahead with the Early Acceptance application. Got his hopes up but unfortunately, it looks like U of M is just not in his future. At least not for undergraduate school. We expect a denial or waitlist at this point. Good luck to everyone still waiting. I hope you all get good news. And if not, remember, the competition was fierce… 55,000 applications for about 6,000 spots. We know many, many highly qualified applicants will be turned down. If you have the grads and stats to apply to U of M, your future is bright no matter which school you attend.

@JDUP837 , here’s hoping all the best to you and your son! Many places begin announcing soon (Emory 3/30, Ivy Day 3/31, UM 4/1 onwards). There’s still hope! I really hope he gets in but, if it doesn’t work out, it sounds like he has great credentials and I’m sure he will do well at whatever college is fortunate enough to get him. All the best to everyone still waiting!

So we are counting on Friday at this point?

Is it just me or have barely any people been accepted to engineering?

Does everyone think tomorrow, April 1 will be announcement day? Do things look bleak if haven’t heard by now?

@silverred1 I wouldn’t necessarily count on Friday. No one on this thread would know for sure unless they work in the admissions office. Michigan has been very honest throughout the process. They have said April and that will almost certainly happen given the May 1 acceptance deadlines. But as far as I know they have never committed to an exact date in April. As to whether things look bleak if you haven’t heard by now, again, none of us knows. Logic would tell you that the longer it takes to get a response the slimmer the odds. Certainly many will get rejected, but some may very well be accepted. It’s only a matter of a few days or weeks at this point, so no point in guessing. Trust that the University will do the right thing whichever way it breaks.

@Illinihoop Agree 100%. The problem is that people have been speculating wildly on the boards, quoting various sources. This is creating unnecessary angst. Many people have already been admitted, but certainly more will be admitted.
