University of Michigan Deferred Applicants Class of 2022

My admissions counselor said that a letter would help showing demonstrated interest because they have “all of these applicants with high stats but we never hear back from them”.

That is interesting - and frustrating, that they give out conflicting information.

Hi quick question: Are people emailing their LOCIs or are they sending it by mail? Thanks

Probably won’t send a LOCI, since the deferral letter and a live chat with admissions office clearly stated NOT to. I know it was mentioned that someone’s regional counselor said it was OK, but they all might not think that, so it’s not worth the risk.

Any idea when they will start admitting deferred applicants? I know we might not hear until March but do they start to accept or decline earlier?

Mid February

also my admissions counselor is new this year so I’m not sure exactly what to believe. What’s done is done and I don’t believe that showing interest will in any way deter chances of admission

I don’t know, but they may want to see if applicants can follow directions - as far as not submitting anything extra other than recent grades like the letter said. Didn’t your admissions counselor say that the recent grades “is the only additional piece of information that they will review with the deferral?” So it may not matter if a LOCI is sent either way. I just wish they were clearer with what they wanted and don’t want. Best of luck to you EthanAz1. Hope you get an acceptance letter soon.

I know people from last year who got in who didn’t write letters and also did write letters so it’s not a huge deal I suppose. Hoping to get in together!

I sent a LOCI and she said she’ll add it to my file as she appreciates the newly expressed interest.

Generally speaking, a single, brief but sincere LOCI cannot hurt. What the don’t want is to be buried under a blizzard of paper, additional recommendations etc.

Should I send a LOCI before my counselor can send my first semester grades? Or should I wait?

I sent mine in to the California rep, and have heard no response, and it has been about a week.

I sent mine on Jan 2nd, got a response in 2 hours, and she nicely told me to not send anything but grades

So we will hear back in mid February?

No, not everyone will “hear back” in February.

Just be prepared. For most applicants, it would be a rather long journey. Admission will come out from Feb to April, but more rejections towards the end. Among the rejected ones, many would be offered to be on waitlist. Some of them may be offered guaranteed transfer in sophomore. In that case, the wait is even longer. You will start hearing complaints in the near future from the applicants who applied EA but not reciving a final decision after several months. This happened every year

anyone else get this after sending their LOCI?? sounds very generic…

Thank you for your continued interest in the University of Michigan please be assured that it will be noted in my evaluation of your application. The University received almost 40,000 early action applications this year and as a result, admission was very competitive. Be assured that we used a holistic and comprehensive review process and looked at all aspects of your application before a decision was made. We considered your grades, curriculum, test scores, essays, extra-curricular involvement, recommendations, and personal background as part of our evaluation.

Before we can make a final decision on your application we need to further evaluate the strength of the regular decision applicants, as well as the yield rate of our admitted students to determine if we have space for you in the freshman class. If you are still interested in the University of Michigan, please submit your mid-year grades no later than mid-February so they can be considered as we continue to assess your application. Otherwise, there is nothing further we need from you at this time and we ask you do not send in any other additional information. As stated in your deferral letter, we will have a final admissions decision for you by early April.

Again, admission to the University of Michigan is the most competitive it has ever been this year, so I encourage all deferred students to keep the University of Michigan as an option, but also to also explore the other opportunities available to them. Please feel free to contact me again if you have any additional questions or concerns.

^ That has been posted on their blog for a while. It is addressed to all deferred students.
