@jr2016 I’ll help out with this - I’ve done enough research (even though my son has zero interest in an ivy)!! If you go by USNews and World Report it’s Cornell, Penn (especially biomedical), Princeton and Columbia. Some people lump Stanford in the ivy category and it’s always rated 1-3 for engineering.
Hello prospective Michigan applicants!
I just finished my HAIL interview a few minutes ago, so I’m going to share a bit of my experiences for anyone else who will have an interview with the school in the coming days.
The interview I had was less of an “interview” and more of an informal conversation with an alumni. It lasted pretty long (1 hr. 14 min. for me), but it was a pretty good experience. I got to know more about the school, and the school got to learn more about me. Just remember to not sweat it too much; it’s just an informal interview and will have no negative impact on your application!
Here are some of the questions that I was asked:
(1) Why U of M?
(2) Why are you interested in your intended major?
(3) What other schools have you applied to/will apply to in the future?
(4) What do you hope to bring to the U of M community?
(5) What do you hope to get out of college?
(6) If you had to tell something about yourself to the admissions officers right now, what would you say? i/i What was your favorite high school memory?
(8) What was your favorite class? Your least favorite class?
(9) What are some of your extracurricular activities?
(10) What are some of your leadership skills?
(11) How do you spend your free time? What are some of your hobbies?
(12) Do you have any siblings? What role do they play in your life?
(13) Is there anything else that you would like to tell us?
Last but not least, remember to have some questions to ask the interviewer at the end of the interview. This is the perfect opportunity to learn more about the school! All in all, this interview is an opportunity for you to get to know the school better, so don’t waste it! In the end, the conversation you have should be a memorable and fun experience (and good practice for any interview that you will have in the future).
If you have any questions, just PM me! I’ll try to get back to you.
Thank you very much for the information! !!!
So helpful and thoughtful - now if only my son’s interviewer would contact him. I know they are busy…
Feeling so nervous guys. I just had somebody read my essay and they told me it didn’t show a reason for them to admit me to the school. I’m low key freaking out now DX
@jr2016 Cornell’s the best - out of the ivies - for engineering. Penn is good, but not as strong, and the rest, well, not so much. As for Stanford, its engineering program is second only to MiT’s
@Emminey Unless you’re a borderline applicant, the essays aren’t AS important - even though they’re very very important - as your academic stats and ECs.
@McKilla99 My other Michigan short answers are good I believe. Its the common app essay that the reader said didn’t show a good “why you”. He said it was very well written however. Do you think it’s going to negatively affect my application?
@azwu331 Is the HAIL interview only for engineering students?
@Emminey For elite schools, the school specific questions hold more importance than the common app essay, so you’re good in that regard. I don’t think it’ll negatively impact your application. However, it may not positively impact your application either. It’ll just, be there.
@jumpingstar Yes, the HAIL interview is only for engineering applicants
When do the admission decisions start to roll out?
@Rahulbarcafan December 18th most likely.
Curious as to what it says on everyone’s application status right now.
Thank you @azwu331 for sharing that information. Good luck to you!
@bryan925 Nothing has changed. Has yours?
I got the FA change yesterday (or maybe even before; I havent logged into Wolverine for a while). Now it says 2017 | uMich | No Financial Aid Data Available. I know the FA change means something for NYU, but does it matter for uMich as well?
When is the CSS Profile due?
I noticed last year that more “average” in-state applicants got in before the top ones for Early Action at my school. I assume this is for yield purposes because they assume those with the higher stats are not as likely to accept right away. Is that likely to continue this year?
Too bad I’m international. I’ve to pay the entire cost of attendance :’)
