University of Michigan EA class of 2020 thread

@BrynMawr61 If they follow the trend from last year, the first decisions will probably be released on December 18.

@sunbeams Mich’s unweighted GPA might be slightly different from your son’s. They rework the GPA dropping certain classes like phys.ed, health, other non-academic electives, etc. If the student has earned all A’s in those classes and anything lower than an A in the academic classes then Mich’s GPA will be lower than the high school transcript and likewise the reverse it true. If the student has earned all A’s in academic classes and anything lower than an A in the gym, health, etc. category then Mich’s GPA will be higher than the high school transcript.

@overthetopmom Got it! Thanks for the info. Hope we all hear great news soon!

Okay, small rant time. I have such a love-hate relationship with UM’s gpa system because my school has a tougher grading scale than most schools (95+ = A, 93-94 = A-, 90-92 = B+). I’ve had several classes where I got 92% which would be an A many places, but at my school it is a B+, so when UM does their whole recalculation it makes it seem like I did worse than I actually did. Okay, that is all. I’m sure no one really cared anyway, it just feels better to vent :stuck_out_tongue:

Hi everyone, i was just wondering about my chances of admission and i thought someone here could help. I’m a double legacy at Michigan (both my parents went), and my brother goes. I’ve had other relatives attend and work there also. I’m from New York. Based on the numbers on the UMich website, both my SAT scores and GPA are around the 25 percentile mark. I’ve expressed to the school many times that it’s my top choice. Do you think i can get in?

I check my email maybe 30 times a day hoping to get my decision… I don’t think I can wait any longer :((

@coffee18 Stop doing that. Virtually no one will hear back for another few weeks.

@GoPack87 Your high school will send a school report which will show your particular high school’s grading system. Michigan will be aware of how your school grades.

@blprof I know they get the school report, but I don’t think it will actually affect the numbers themselves (my 92% B+ will still be dropped to a B and negatively impact my overall gpa) just how they are viewed. I could be wrong though, as I obviously do not work in UM admissions…

@ckaufs Are your scores/grades and other credentials similar to your brother’s?

@gopack87 that is how kids with % grades feel. If the get a 93, it is the same as another kids A/4.0 A 98? Same as another kid’s A/4.0. But not all As are created equally! I think schools do know this. If your school report makes a 93 a B+ or a 3.0 for UMICH, but a 4.0 for someone else, I think they will simply “expect” lower gpa’s from your school is all.

I think the .0 GPA needs to phase out and % take their place country-wide.

So what is the consensus on likely release date? Has anyone contacted admissions?

@pubkid I have not contacted admissions, but I do have a guess just from the trends of previous years. It is likely to be Friday, December 18 (the last Friday before the 24th). Last year, the first decisions were released on Friday, December 19, which was also the last Friday before the 24th. Some people heard after the 19th too, but still by the 24th.

If anyone wants to look, the decisions start here on last years thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-michigan-ann-arbor/1689768-university-of-michigan-early-action-class-of-2019-discussion-p62.html

The university told me at first that I was not eligible for Early Action, because they had not received all my material but now they have told me that I am in the Early Action program, what does this mean? Did they read my application already?

I think it means they received everything they need to review your app now

@kate1997 I applied to the School of Nursing as well

I understand that decisions are predicted to be sent out on the18th, however, I sent in my application before the end of August (I worked all summer on essays). Does anyone believe that I could possibly receive my decision earlier since they’ve obviously had ample amount of time to read and review my application? Or would Michigan most likely not do such a thing? Thanks!

@coffee18 There is very little chance that they would do that. They send out all decisions in waves of emails at a similar time. The reason for this is that it would simply be a logistical nightmare for them to release decisions at different times since they most likely have over 50,000 decisions to send out.

Chance me pls.

I have applied EA to CoE for civil engg. I know my scores are well below average so do i really stand any chance?

@coffee18 Doesn’t matter when you turn it in. I turned mine in a week before the EA deadline and a friend of mine turned his in early September. I received my decision before him.
