Thank you for your freshman application to the University of Michigan. After an initial individualized and comprehensive review of your application, we have determined that we will need additional information in order to make a final decision. We will not re-evaluate your application file until after our regular decision deadline of February 1, 2016. We need this additional information and time to ensure that we give your application the best possible review. We will notify you of a final decision on your application by early April.
The quality of grades earned in academic courses is one of several critical factors taken into consideration in evaluating a student’s competitive admissibility. To give your application a final evaluation, we will need your fall semester or first trimester grades. Because it is important that we receive these grades as soon as possible, please request to have a PDF of your grades sent from the issuing institution to our office via an e-transcript vendor or to ecredentials@umich.edu. If your counselor sent the initial School Report for your application through The Common Application online portal, they will need to complete the 2015-2016 MidYear Report using the same method. Otherwise, please ask your high school counselor to fax a report of these grades to our office at 734-936-0740.
I haven’t received anything and am freaking out noww! What could this mean , is it a possible rejection or what?
@eatsleepswim123 it sounds like you went straight to the wait list
Deferred 4.6 W and 35 ACT, good luck everyone else!

@eatsleepswim123 , what are your stats?

To those who have not yet heard: Do not worry. U-M said all decisions would be released before the 24th.
It can not release all of the EA decisions at once. Just because you have not heard back does not mean you were deferred or denied, there are still 6 days of decisions left.
Do all deferral emails say the same thing? “We are pleased that you have applied and are impressed with your achievements. However, our high application volume, coupled with the very strong credentials of our applicants in recent years, has contributed to an increasingly competitive admissions process. As a result, we are writing to inform you that your application is currently being deferred for further review.”
no, about 2-3 hours ago
@eatsleepswim123 I disagree with w3irdfish3s. I think that letter sounds promising because they are telling you to send your grades. The other one just suggests you can.
@eatsleepswim123 It sounds like you are on the edge and your application may not be strong enough as of now but something about you stands out to them so they want you to send in your grades from this semester to gauge whether or not you have potential to succeed there
@TGLTGL Don’t be too discouraged. Last year my son also was deferred from Columbia (and University of Chicago), both with great interviews, etc. Then he was deferred from Michigan so was in the same boat as you. ACT 34, 10 writing, 3.96 GPA, 5th out of 525, 14 AP classes, 2 awesome internships, etc. He received his acceptance from Michigan at the end of January. Sent an e-mail to the regional admissions rep the week after getting the deferral, stating he was still very interested in attending. I think the admissions office wanted to make sure that you didn’t get into an ED (likely IVY) school, and since there wouldn’t be enough time to withdraw your application before Michigan’s EA decisions went out, they defer many students like you then accept them in January after you’ve sent an e-mail (and first semester grades). We are OOS. Good luck!!!
