My son was deferred from CoE
OOS (IL)
33 ACT
3.93 UW
Top 10%
(4) 4 & 5 APs (3 more in his current schedule)
Many STEM ECs
We are not surprised, but I feel bad as UM is his first choice.

@TGLTGL sure. She just mentioned that UM was her top choice school and she would be updating UM with any compelling updates and her grades. Really anything additionally that could be added to your file that you did not have time and/or space to add in your application. Good Luck!
34 ACT, 22 of 607, 8 AP classes this year, 104.26 GPA weighted, lots of extracurriculars including Senior Class Vic President (Student Council), NHS, HOSA, DECA, played piano for 14 years… still got deferred and I don’t understand
I think that the deferral letter stating the application is currently under review is much better than the one stating it won’t be reviewed until after the February deadline
Accepted OOS!
3.92/4
12 APs
Superscore 2300, best individual 2190
@angelacgeorge I got that same email too!
@sungjong same. I got deferred from my EA schools too and its such a great feeling lol.
@TooOld4School my stats are 3.31 and 2000 SAT but my gpa was a 2.94 freshman year, 3.2 sophomore year, 4.0 junior year, and 4.2 senior year first semester so I assume that I got that letter because they want to make sure that I keep up my grades at the 4.2 before they can consider accepting me? I also have a ton of extracurriculars and all that stuff so that definitely was not an issue
Accepted College Of Arts and Science
OOS!
33 act
2 APs
4.0/4.0 Unweighted
I am still in shock.
@sweetpuppy What do you think made you stand out to the school?
34, 9 APs, 3.98 unweighted (one B freshman year) checking in
@brendancollins yes my son was admitted today in Kinesiology.
Still haven’t gotten an e-mail and my portal hasn’t changed either…
@emilyskates I have a son with amazing stats, all 5’s on all AP tests/AP Scholar with Distinction, taking 6 AP classes in senior year, 800’s on SAT Chem, physics, and Math II. Multiple school, National & International awards. I was concerned that Michigan would assume U-M was a safety for him and defer him. His essays demonstrated a real desire to attend Michigan and he also made it clear in his interview. I really believe it is what made the difference between him getting accepted and others like you who clearly should have been accepted as well but were deferred. I have no doubt this will all work out for you as soon as you let the admissions office know that Michigan is your first choice. It’s crazy that you should have to do that, I know. Applying should be enough, but I would fight for the spot you have earned! You’ll get it. Best of luck!
How my day went… Refreshed WA and this forum all day…Got deferred…cried a little…Ordered some pizza and ate my sadness away .
I honestly was not expecting this outcome at all. However, I was particularly proud of my common app essay. I worked very hard on it, and the topic was unique. Because my extracurriculars and grades were not spectacular, I have to believe that the decision was a result of my essays.
@TGLTGL
@smilealways1 I’m sure everything will work out! Keep going and don’t give up! You got this!! (:
For those who have been deferred, have faith. 4 students, including me, got in today but 3 out of the 4 are likely going to other schools to which they have been accepted.
@smilealways1 sounds just like my day, ha
Got accepted, my stats were 2220 ACT, 3.83 GPA (UW), great EC’s including class president, I think what put me over tho was my rec letters, one of them was written by a teacher I’ve had for 4 years who also did his PhD at Michigan and used to be a professor there.
Accepted for engineering. OOS. God bless.
SAT: 2240; 1480 M + CR Math II: 800
GPA: 3.88 UW, something like 4.2 W
Recommendations: probably good
ECs: crap
Essays: completed in about 4 hours
Pretty shocked. Then again, apparently my school has a 60+% early acceptance rate.
Go blue!
