are you saying that they’re implementing a wait list this year? for the first time? oh boy. i can already picture the meltdowns at my school and here on cc lol

personally i’m expecting a deferral from this round. idek if i’ll even be competitive in the RD pool. i guess there’s no point in worrying yet

My son has same stats as you - 3.65 and 32 ACT. Hardest course load offered. Lots of extra curriculars, a paid internship at an engineering firm and His college counselor at school told him to expect a deferral. He is applying to CoE

hey guys! I’m an OOS freshman now at michigan and last year I was in the same exact boat as you guys! I just want to let you guys know that its really easy to overthink your admission chances and get terribly nervous, especially with the statistics of most people on College Confidential.

I applied EA to LSA last year with some pretty low statistics, compared to the average accepted. I had a 2030 SAT and only a 3.6 GPA. I was the editor in chief of my school paper and am something like the 10th in my family to go to U of M (a lot of my family is in Michigan)…but other than that no real hooks. I’m from a pretty vanilla suburb in New Hampshire. Practically the only thing I can think of that made me stand out was that I’ve been a pretty serious polo player (horse polo, if you’re wondering) for much of my life which is probably unusual. Of course, UM doesn’t have a polo team so I can’t think that helped much.

Anyway, the point is I was definitely an underdog and for some reason (or by some mistake) I was accepted EA. So don’t give up and remember that the college admission process is not an exact science! And whoever is deferred this round, just remember to keep trucking and keep up those grades and show interest! Your efforts will pay off! Keeping all of you in my thoughts and hope that you guys all get some good news this upcoming week! Go Blue!

Also, sorry if I come across like the high and mighty guru of Michigan admissions! If I do sound like that, I don’t mean to!

@nosyla Glad to hear there are people with similar stats applying. Best of luck to your son! @kkugs22 You definitely do not come across as high and mighty! Thanks for the post, needed that boost of morale :D

My only concern is that submitted my application right before the deadline. That’s my only worry to being deferred. My stats and everything else is fine, but I just took a really long time on my application trying to make it really good and I worry they won’t even glance at it

@classOf15 really interesting that it would be tougher for guys than for girls at UM. That completely cuts across the grain nationally, where the opposite is true. Do you think that’s true for OOS as well as IS?

@nosyla: deferral means you’re put into the regular admission pool. At that point you’re like any other applicant for regular admission, and you’ll hear in the spring. deferral is an early-pool outcome only. waitlist is a regular-pool outcome only. Of course it is possible to be deferred and then waitlisted later.

@kkugs22 Were you accepted EA or deferred and then accepted? I am basically the exact same as you and have been freaking out so much. Congratulations on your acceptance (a year later), still super exciting!

Do they really look at when you submitted your application? If it’s not due or looked at until November 1st, why would it make a difference as long as you’re in by deadline?

@nat97xo Sorry for the bleak news. It would not be the first time a wait list has been used. In past years the wait list has been used, but very few (<100) have been accepted off the wait list. This year if the university is truly serious about achieving a smaller freshman class, I would expect them to use a wait list where they would wait list thousands and then later accept hundreds of students later on depending on the yield. I’m hoping for the best for you! If you do get deferred, do not let it bother you too much. I really forced myself to get over it in about a day. That way I could move on and enjoy my winter break.

@kellz10 - thanks so much! S auditioned at U Mich on dec 5, so we were just trying to figure out if no call meant he was out of the running. But it sounds like he can keep hope alive for a little while longer! Looks like you have gotten a number of great acceptances - congratulations! Your only problem will be deciding among so many wonderful choices! Let us know what you eventually decide (I imagine you still have a number of schools to hear from too).

UM Class of 2018 here! To all of you reading this thread daily like I did this time last year, BREATHE. I sat by my computer biting my nails until December 20th came around, missing a lot of holiday fun in the process. Go out and get some ice cream, see your friends, and DON’T sit around worrying all day! If this is the place for you, they know it down in admissions. If you don’t get that coveted email, it truly isn’t the end of the world. There are hundreds of great schools out there, and you’re gonna be happy and meet amazing people no matter where you wind up. So just remember to keep calm, and enjoy the holidays! I hope to see many of you on campus next year! Go Blue!

I’m on this forum because my son has an EA app in at Michigan, but I thought I’d chime in about waitlists and deferrals…I was deferred EA in 1981, then waitlisted after the RD round, and I still got in to the COE. I realize that things have changed just a bit in 33 years, but don’t let anybody tell you you’re out of the running if you get deferred/waitlisted. I had already paid my deposit to another school when I got the phone call/telegram/Pony Express. Don’t lose faith.

@zebrarunner thank you!! and don’t worry about hearing from the dance department too soon. from what they told me, they’re only accepting a couple people at the moment and then wait listing the rest of the strong candidates until all the auditions are complete so they can compare all auditioners at once. so late february most likely?
