Yes. They’re using the hybrid model, subject to change at any moment.
I think they will stay hybrid at least until students are on campus. Don’t think they would do what H is doing. Too costly for a public school
Tuition was due for students who opted for their payment plan on 6/30, if not in the payment plan then 100% is due in August. They should for sure know at least a portion of the population who will be attending and compare the percentage who opted in this year vs. past years. They are also likely keeping track of the number of calls and/or requests for GAP years. But again, what the heck will students do in a GAP year if everything goes backwards? County colleges are filling up fast and travel and programs are limited. I just don’t see a great option except to attend.
I’ve been hearing of kids from different schools still thinking about doing fall semester online from home. A few people I know are taking a gap year. One went to Europe (one parent from there) another is tutoring online and another doing some sort of volunteer/humanitarian work. All have good schools, so they are going to chill for a year.
My concern is that I won’t hear from umich until after I pay tuition at another school, if at all. Ugh.
i’m just so confused like bruh are they gonna let us know or what
I can see UMichigan calling students on August 31 at 9 P.M. - who knows what will happen in this climate.
Not us - we are headed to UToronto.
BTW - some colleges allow students up to the end of the first week of classes to withdraw and get 100% refund on the tuition - not sure about the dorm fees, but might be similar.
Good luck to everyone - I sent a kid to Brown, Yale, UToronto. I will be back in 3 years for my last son. What a ride.
Yeah. Harvard may have upset a lot of people, but at least they took the reins and took control.
But they must know other schools with a similar profile are acting quickly to get everyone to choose classes, dorms etc. ,. I don’t know if my parents will even let me go if I’m already at another school. Some schools are starting earlier too in order to make sure of the head count.
@sushiritto @Knowsstuff I was wondering if umich usually gives a final decision for waitlisted applicants? I know some colleges that actually say if a student is rejected and others that just don’t email them anything/update their portals forcing the student to move on. In your experience, has umich updates portals and notified applicants of their status or do they just make the student move on? Thanks.
While I’m sure a few applicants could slip through the cracks, in prior years, rejected applicants received an email that states the waitlist is closed.
Here’s an example from a rejected CoE applicant from the Class of 2023:
This letter is from **LAST YEAR. **
Got it- hopefully they continue with that and at least notify us that we were rejected.
One of the nicest rejection letters out there. Yes, you will get something. Michigan at least has some class about it. Check your portal and spam email once in awhile. I am sure once it’s released you will hear others on here also getting accepted /rejected.
This is from the original letter…
“Meanwhile, we occasionally admit a small number of applicants before the end of June from our waitlist.“
Seems like waitlist should be closed at this point.
@daphneheslop Thanks for sharing. How do your kids like Brown vs Yale vs UToronto?
@bkatguy Every school has delayed their gap year app deadline and their WL deadline. At least four Ivy WL letters said the same thing - end of June. But still nothing is happening.
Two key indicators are housing assignments and tuition number. Missing either or both means the school is not ready to close the WL list. In previous years, housing would be done for freshmen at most top private and public schools by late June to mid July.
I think they are adding to the drama by extending deadline after deadline. It’s coddling at this point. People need to decide what they are going to do. They are allowing students to control the process and chaos is ensuing
My son LOVES Brown. He is Pre-Med there. He got into 5 Ivies but did the revisits they offered and then made his decision. He talked to students a lot and did NOT tell students he was revisiting - just talked casually to students when he visited. He found Brown to be very warm, everyone was friendly, helpful. He is doing Pre-Med as I said and he has gotten a LOT of advice - a lot of help regarding courses, research, etc.
My other son at Yale LOVED the campus, the students, the people overall - he just found everyone to be very friendly, helpful - just found it a good FIT for his personality. This son is very outgoing, plays several instruments, speaks several languages, has a youtube channel, etc.
My daughter is headed to UToronto - so I don’t know yet how to comment on that college. The initial visit went very well but she hasn’t lived and attended classes yet. However, she spent 3 years in Canada training for the Olympics but got seriously injured and came home. She LOVED UMichigan but UToronto was her second choice for sure.
Good luck, I hope you hear good news from UMichigan - do not give up hope, this year is different.
@daphneheslop Thanks so much for the detailed response!
Along with a 1.9% tuition increase and a $50/per term temporary Covid-19 fee, UMich plans to dip into their endowment:
And that’s why we picked Michigan to get through times like these… Lol.
$50. 00 /covid few… Well you get 2 masks, 2 bandanas and a small bottle of hand sanitizer . Lol
2 bandanas? 2 masks for 3 months? Hmmm…
