Also schools have to use their financial aid as appropriated. So they will need those people too. The question is when will they pull the plug finally. Ugh. That being said, I see no reason to give up. Sucks to hope hopelessly, but that’s the situation.
I thought waitlist admits don’t count in the overall yield rates. Is that not true?
Its laughable… that US wont admit students from foreign countries. Lets talk facts… A country that is 5% of population has 25% deaths and cases ? Are you guys for real ? We are the worst country in the world and we wont admit international students??? Go look at facts before you type your opinion please. God I hope better from our future leaders…
You misunderstand. I don’t think we are arguing for that position, just trying to understand the impact of these policies on the admissions process. I think it must be a huge problem. Many of these people won’t be able to come, and if they can’t do all online, they will be forced to defer. No? Isn’t that correct? At the same time, schools may not fill their spots. They may just wait for them.
So since UMich is a hybrid program, international students WILL be able to attend provided they can get here:
“Students attending schools adopting a hybrid model—that is, a mixture of online and in person classes—will be allowed to take more than one class or three credit hours online. These schools must certify to SEVP, through the Form I-20, “Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status,” that the program is not entirely online, that the student is not taking an entirely online course load for the fall 2020 semester, and that the student is taking
the minimum number of online classes required to make normal progress in their degree program. The above exemptions do not apply to F-1 students in English language training programs or M-1 students, who are not permitted to enroll in any online courses (see 8 CFR 214.2(f)(6)(i)(G) and 8 CFR 214.2(m)(9)(v))).”
Right, but health or university officials could order everyone to go back home at any time if cases on campus surge this Fall. Also, a lot of colleges may be giving an inflated impression of how many classes will really be in person this Fall. I feel really bad for international students. This is a bad situation for them to be in,
While circumstances may change, UMich has already moved some classes to online only (remote). It’s fairly easy to tell what’s remote and what’s not. Just look through their course catalog (LSA).
For example(s), Orgo is completely online. Calc, 1, 2 and 3 appear to have in-person classes scheduled. UMich sent an email to parents stating that they were re-configuring classes, maybe they actually did.
My kid has only one class remote plus three in-person classes as a junior.
Yes. So an international student will be able to attend unless they can’t get a visa or get past a travel ban. True that if classes suddenly go fully online, they are screwed. I would defer if in that position. Too risky.
BTW, Harvard classes will be 100% online even though freshmen will be there at least in the fall. That was smart
Meaning they are not leaving internationals in the lurch.
@Caligorilla When H classes are 100% online, international students must leave the country or risk deportation. Incoming students won’t be allowed to enter the country. This affects all four cohorts, not just first years. How’s that smart?

Unlike other Ivy schools with hybrid or full in-person instructions (at least the intention right now), this “100% online 100% of the time” approach literally sends internationals under the bus… It’s telling them that even if you have a visa and the school will take all freshman this fall, you can’t enter the USA. If you are upperclassmen already here, please return to your home country or risk deportation…
@LimboKid I mean that Harvard has created a clear path for the year that allows students to plan the year. People are not traveling here only to be sent home in a month. Or being kept in the ranks until late August only to be denied entrance to the US. At least they know what the deal is. And the school can decide on waitlist applicants to take their place rather than keeping those people waiting until after they’ve enrolled elsewhere. I respect Harvard for taking a decision and moving forward. I wish other schools would put an end to the lack of clarity and direction. No way to guarantee international students coming this year so better to minimize so many being in limbo. Sucks for international students, but many of them were not getting visas or going to clear travel restrictions. It’s July. Schools need to make clear decisions for the good of everyone.
@Caligorilla True that. More impact for the 600+ upperclassmen at H who have visas but still can’t enter the country next Spring. Especially the seniors… no job interviews, no graduation, no nothing. But hey, as long as tuition is paid, H Endowment is happy. Some of my closest high school buddies are internationals. Canceled graduation and escaping home senior year really took a toll on them. Sad.
Agree that it’s sad, but it was unavoidable given government policies. I think Harvard decided to protect the experience and protect the health of faculty and hopefully students. Other schools are upset because faculty are being forced to teach in person at their own peril. This pandemic has created trauma everywhere, but I think Harvard did the most prudent thing in the face of absolute uncertainty. These students are losing a year, but they are not losing their lives. Harvard is able to move forward for those students that are sure to come. Other schools can’t afford to do what H did. So instead thousands are still hanging on to waitlists with no idea what will happen. It’s sad for us too.
Today UMICH is conducting an orientation and Advisory session for all Freshmen admitted and to select courses for upcoming fall session. This should give them a better sense of how many admitted students are seriously considering UMICH for fall. Lets see how it goes.
Not sure it will make a difference. They have their numbers. Probably taking from the waitlist here and there as they learn of a gap year request or international student unable to come to the US or not wanting 100% online. It is what it is. But thanks.
When is that session? I didn’t see anything on it.
it’s for admitted students
what was that code thing ppl entered before the url to see the code of the page? i forgot and just wanna see if there are any clues even tho its 99% not
Doesn’t UMich offer hybrid teaching with everyone back to campus this fall? Think hybrid systems allow internationals to enter the country… no?
