@hailtopitt1787 What does the committee take into consideration when making decisions about scholarships? Is there any chance of getting any type of scholarship if you don’t have that high of stats? Thank you!

I applied on 10/31 with the priority application. One of the benefits listed in the many emails I got about the priority app said a decision in 3 weeks. Yesterday I talked to admissions and they said priority is 3-5 weeks. Can somebody please verify whether it is 3 weeks or 3-5. I am pretty dissapointed as I was expecting a decision this week…

@mommdc Keep us posted! Hoping to hear good news for you and your D. Also wishing to find our own envelop but I understand it may be a long wait. Well, while waiting there is always ~O)

@girlintheworld The Scholarship Committee looks at a combination of things: SAT/ACT scores, overall GPA, and strength of curriculum. Outside the classroom activities (leadership, athletics, community service, etc.) are reviewed by the committee as well, but they are given secondary consideration.

As our website states, in recent years, scholarship eligible students possessed ALL of the following:

-minimum 33 ACT (Math and English subscores average) or minimum SAT score of 1450 (math and critical reading scores only)
-overall ‘A’ average
-top 5% class rank (if applicable) while participating in challenging high school curriculums consisting of AP/IB/Honors courses
-record of excellence in various academic and nonacademic activities outside of the classroom

@hailtopitt1787 My son applied in late August, was accepted into Swanson and Honors College in early September. I see many students that were accepted in October are already receiving merit notification. Am I to assume from that that he will not be offered anything? Are the applications looked at in the order they are received? He definitely exceeds the minimum requirements noted above, so we are surprised that we haven’t heard anything.

@woodsmom, thanks. No scholarship info as of yet. Hoping for good news soon.
Pitt definitely offers great opportunities, but we have to be able to afford sending her there.

@comogirl, I would hope that the scholarship selection process is not done yet. Students can still apply by January 15 with supplemental info and be considered for scholarships as far as I know. And Pitt admissions has said before that the committee will meet weekly and everybody should hear by March at the latest. Of course everyone hopes to hear sooner.

What I find problematic is that some very high stats students may be offered a scholarship and then be accepted elsewhere and not attend Pitt. Can the scholarship then be given to someone else?

@mommdc I’m wondering the same thing. Someone at my school with similar stats to me got full tuition + Chancellor’s invite. I know he’s not going to go to Pitt, and I definitely am. I haven’t gotten anything yet, but is his money reallocated later in the year?

I think Pitt is supposed to consider applicants with a holistic review, but honestly does a “pointy” have as equal a chance as a “well-rounded” applicant? If a GPA in math and science (designated major choice) up through 1st quarter 12th grade is a 4.1, but overall GPA through 11th grade is a 3.478 – 4 years of foreign language, 4 lab sciences, 2 dual enrollment math classes at national university (not cc), scholar athlete, elected officer in 3 ec’s, but a 580 in Critical Reading, and 570 writing – does this person have a shot at all?

@comogirl and @mommdc, the Scholarship selection process is certainly not done! Our scholarships are competitive, so some students go through two or even three reviews before a final decision is made. Some students do find out about scholarships quite early, within three weeks of being admitted or so. BUT many more students do not find out until much later. Don’t take the length of time that you are waiting to hear compared to others as any kind of sign about whether or not you/your child will receive a scholarship offer. Any student who applies by January 15th is automatically considered for scholarships, so the committee will be meeting weekly through February. Bottom line, any student who is selected for scholarships will hear back by March 1 at the latest. Hope that helps!

@Leyland, for insights on the selection process, please refer to this page (linked below) or the post above. We do consider applicants holistically. As a point of reference, this page lists what our scholarship eligible students have possessed in recent years: https://oafa.pitt.edu/learn-about-aid/academic-scholarships/

My son applied to Pitt in mid October and accepted in late October to Swanson School of Engineering. Here are his stats:

SAT I: 2350 (800 CR, 790 Math, 760 W) over 2 test dates
ACT: 35 composite
SAT II: 800 Math2, 800 US history, 720 Physics (He is taking AP Physics this year)
Unweighted GPA: 3.9 (Wighted GPA 4.5)
AP: World History, European History, US History, Psychology, Eng Lang & Comp, Calculus BC - All 5s
Senior Year course Load: 6 AP subjects
Major Awards: National Merit Semifinalist

State: Illinois
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: Asian-Indian
Gender: Male

He is awarded a full tution scholarship in early November and invited to apply for the Chancellor’s Scholarship.

IMHO Pitt may take a holistic view when making admission decisions, but it is by the numbers when it comes to scholarships - not much wiggle room!

Well, shoot. I have a 33 ACT, but when you average the math and English scores, the average is a 32.5. Does that mean that I won’t have a chance at a scholarship, even if I have a top 3% class rank?

@akacesfan I think scores are rounded up. My math and english scores averaged at 32.5, also, and I received full tuition. I think you have a really good chance!

Seems like a lot of people are getting full tuition. How can that be?

How important is it to be honors college eligible and take honors classes as a freshman? When I superscore my Reading and Math scores, I have around a 1300 and I have already been admitted to Pitt. Is it worth retaking the SAT/ACT to be eligible? Would it look a lot better to take this rigorous curriculum for potential admission to graduate school?

@Chelsey123, It is not necessary for you to re-take any tests. You can participate in the honors college after you are already a student even if you aren’t automatically eligible as an incoming freshman. After two terms, if you maintain a specific GPA, you will be eligible to take honors classes. You also have the option to talk to your academic advisor at Pitt when scheduling classes and they may be able to help you sign up for UHC classes in your freshman year. Of course, it is entirely up to you whether you’d like to participate or not. http://www.honorscollege.pitt.edu/course-eligibility

Okay thanks. Would Honors College students be given special consideration because of their more challenging curriculum when applying to graduate school?

Graduate schools certainly look at how rigorous your undergraduate curriculum would be. I encourage you to talk to an academic advisor about your plans and they will help you set out on the right academic path for graduate school. It also may be useful for you to check out the admissions websites for the graduate programs you are interested in (our office does not handle graduate admissions for Pitt). They all post information on what they are looking for in a candidate. Having that information straight from the programs you are interested in can be useful to you when you go to plan out your undergraduate career.

Scholarship money most likely cannot be reallocated from one student to another. Pitt gives merit scholarships with the knowledge that many of the students offered a merit scholarship will not attend. If everyone that was offered a scholarship accepted it, I assume that it would exceed what they intend to give out in merit scholarships.

DS received offer for full tuition and Chancellor’s invite today! Looks like the second wave, letter dated November 17th
