esther44 got emailthis week stating 5K merit and 5K pitt loan.
@silver215, If you call, they will tell you if you’re even eligible for merit, and then you’ll know if you’re waiting in vain. My daughter also got awards elsewhere, but didn’t meet all of Pitt’s criteria. They’re looking for a 1480+ SAT (or 33 composite ACT), near-straight A’s, APs and top class percentage.
we were shocked…had a merit scholarship of $10k a year but with panther Pride award it doubled to 20k a year which brought it into the doable range. We did not expect that and in fact had pretty much decided on another school. Now we’re a bit rattled.
This is just crazy. I rechecked our EFC and with 2 in college next year it is about $15k each. So I am just astounded that Pitt offered only $5500 in loans and said we didn’t qualify for any other financial aid for in state tuition. What really concerns me is why - are they looking at the same numbers that we have? That’s a pretty big gap.
I was also curious - does Pitt require a 4.0 unweighted for merit?
@jjplus3, they don’t give a specific GPA requirement: “In recent years, scholarship eligible students possessed ALL of the following:
-Minimum SAT score of 1480 or ACT composite score of 33
-Overall ‘A’ average
-Challenging high school curriculums consisting of AP/IB/Honors courses
-Top 5% class rank (if applicable)”
@MdgmMom
Whom should we call to to ask if we’re even eligible for merit aid?
@hailtopitt1787
Should I even be calling someone to ask about potential merit award? I’ve received a financial package two days ago consisting of a panther pride award and a few loans totaling 16k (all need-based aid). Is it possible this will change to include a merit award?
Hi @aspire98,
Anyone who applied by or before December 15 is automatically considered for merit aid. Decisions will be going out until March 1 but only those who get an award will be notified. As long as you applied by the December 15 deadline, there is still a chance for you to get an award.
Good luck!

@jjplus3 You might find this thread helpful http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/2124166-schools-not-coming-close-to-my-efc.html#latest
There are more threads in the fin aid forum as well
Thanks - I checked the post. It was a reminder of why she applied to mostly private schools, and why we stuck to the 100% need met school list. We did check the Pitt net price calculator and it wasn’t this bad. But again, we were surprised that Pitt considered our need to be loans only. We have not been counting loans in our calculations since they still need to be repaid and we are already paying on my first child’s unsub loans now. But if it is meant to be, it will be.
Already looking forward to seeing what happens with the private school EA results being released today…
Does anyone know how look it takes the admissions office to review an application for the second time? I was requested to send my first semester grades and I just wanted to know how long It takes before I receive my decision. I updated my grades on Tuesday (1/29/19).
Hi,
Not sure if this will help but my son was in the same position 2 years ago. He sent updated SAT’s at the end of December and then his first semester grades the end of January. He checked his portal on February 9 and the “buttons” changed that day. He received his email and letter in the mail on February 13. Hope this helps. It doesn’t take long. You could even wait a week and followup with a phone call. They really don’t mind updating you. Good luck! It really is a great school. I have a 2018 graduate and also a sophomore.
That’s great! Is the portal thru MyPitt? Thanks!
Yes I believe it is on the mobile app.
@hailtopitt1787 Hi, sorry if this question has been asked before, but do you know when Pitt med GAP interview notifs usually come out? Do they also notify you if you weren’t selected for one?
@memelover123 I was accepted 10/29 and i just got the notice 1/31 for Merit Aid…
@ZeeMeZeeYou hi, thank you for the answer but I was wondering about GAP notifs and not merit
Hi @memelover123,
By now, the School of Medicine might have contacted you to request supplemental material. Those selected to interview will be notified by the school directly in mid-February. They will notify those who are chosen to interview, as well as those not chosen.
Good luck!

@hailtopitt1787 great, thank you!
@hailtopitt1787 If an applicant was asked to submit mid-year grades should she do so via email or SRAR? If SRAR, do you simply change the ‘IP- In progress’ to a grade? What if the course is a full year course- same thing? Any guidance you could provide would be appreciated!
