University of Pittsburgh Class of 2023 Discussion Thread

For those that have recently been informed of their admissions decisions, what date did y’all apply? Concerned as to why I haven’t heard back yet.

My son applied in December - we just got the wait list letter today in the mail.

From what I can tell, a lot of people who are hearing now are those who applied early and were asked for midyear grades. My son applied in October, received a letter in November asking for mid year grades. Those were entered on Feb 4 (all A’s except for one A-). His buttons changed on Friday 2/22, and he received the video acceptance email yesterday.

@hailtopitt1787 hi Hope it’s ok to ask housing questions in this class 2023 discussion thread?

For health sciences freshman LLC, is that group always in same dorm floor?
So we know it is towers? Is it tower a or b if so?

How many freshman in the health science llc?

Should you commit and apply for LLC ASAP since the decision for acceptance into LLC seems to come before the June lottery of housing for all freshman?

Once accepted in Health sciences LLC, is that an option to stay in that group for all 4 years?

My d is admitted, plans to commit this weekend, is a member of fb and snap and insta groups, is being contacted as potential roommate so I thought to explore LLC, we only know what’s on website

Thank you!

And any dorm or health science advice is much appreciated from any Pitt parents here :slight_smile:

Hi @ziveli513 , I can’t answer all of your questions, but I can answer some. My D considered the Health Science LLC last year, but opted not to apply to an LLC. @AmyBeth68 scoped things out for me when she was there for her D’s orientation which was before my D’s orientation. She found out the Health Science LLC is housed in Towers. I think it was Tower B. The floor can change, and technically, even the dorm can change, but the dorm changing is not likely. Not sure how many students are in it. Don’t know anything about the timing of the application and committing. I do believe a student can stay in any LLC as long as they want.

If your D is very excited about the Health Sciences LLC, then I say do it regardless of where the housing is. The Towers are not great, but I have seen worse at other schools. I lived in Tower B my freshman year back in the day. They are pie shaped (where you enter at the door is the small part of the pie) and the room small. However, when I was there, there was no Nordenberg Hall to compare other freshman dorms to. I thought the Health Sciences LLC was wonderful, and I backed off when she was not interested in joining any. She also didn’t want to live in Honors housing because Sutherland was too far removed from central campus for her. And she did get assigned a triple in Nordenberg once it was all done. Interestingly, her third choice for housing after Nordenberg double, then Nordenberg triple, was Tower B. She wanted the central location that both of those dorms offer, so don’t think it’s a ridiculous choice for your girl to live in one of the Towers. Lots of socializing because there are tons of freshmen, and a very convenient location, in my opinion.

Next year, though (2019-20), I do believe Honors College students must live in Sutherland (mandatory). So that will help to form a more cohesive honors group, I think, because students won’t be able to think like my girl did last year. If you want Honors, then Sutherland is your dorm.

Best of luck, and congrats to your D. H2P

Hi @ziveli513,

I wish I could answer all these questions for you but this is actually a Panther Central question. They have a super cool chat feature on their website that you can use to communicate with them or you can also just give them a call, they are really helpful: https://www.pc.pitt.edu/

Congrats to your daughter on being admitted! I will say, LLCs are a great way to go!

I don’t have advice on health science LLC, but as part of freshman housing process your D should be able to apply for any freshman LLC as part of her housing application.

If she wants to live with a particular roommate they need to request each other on the housing application and would need to both apply to the same LLC I would think.

@hailtopitt1787 thank you, much appreciated, will do :slight_smile:

@mommdc thanks!!!
@Winky1 thank you!!

@hailtopitt1787 hi. The summer two day orientation dates for new students info was going out to admitted students mid February with registration opening March?

Has that info been mailed or can we see dates online?

Thanks :slight_smile:

http://www.pittstart.pitt.edu/guidebook.php

Hi @ziveli513,

Our orientation is changing so there will no longer be two-day orientation because it will all be online! The student will receive access to online orientation by May but we are going to start sending out more details very soon! In lieu of a two-day orientation, students will have the option to participate in a Panther Connect two-day retreat. The registration for Panther Connect will probably open next week and students will begin receiving e-mails from us about that very soon as well.

I hope this helps!

Hi @hailtopitt1787 thanks for your reply

I actually was asking about the new optional panther connect two day summer visit retreats , I shouldn’t have called them orientation :slight_smile:
So cool that orientation will be online, very helpful!

The panther connect info on the Pitt website says info on dates and registration for the summer panther connect will come out mid February and registration opens March

I wanted to be sure we didn’t miss that, you are saying info on registration will be emailed for those panther connect dates?

And to all admitted, not just committed freshman?

My d Plans to commit online this weekend. We want to make a little celebration of it :slight_smile:

@mommdc @hailtopitt1787
Thanks mommdc, but the link you gave me is to pittstart. The mandatory two day new student orientation which I believe is what is changing for this year?

Hailtopitt1787 maybe you can clarify for us

The link is live, goes to Pitt website and gives info for class of 2023 mandatory orientation registration for pittstart

Which I read on Pitt website has been discontinued

Help! :slight_smile:

Hi @ziveli513 and @mommdc

Yes, PittStart is discontinued. The new site is not live yet but it will be live soon. Registration for Panther Connect is not open yet, but I anticipate it will open next week and students will hear from us by then.

Best,

Thanks ! @hailtopitt1787
And all admitted students will get an email about panther connect?
Or just those committed

@ziveli513 yes, all admitted students will get information about it :slight_smile:

Thank you @hailtopitt1787 !!!

Mid-year grade decisions sure are taking a while…

@hailtopitt1787 I have a quick question. We received a revised financial aid email today for the pell grant match (thanks btw!) will the university be honoring that for 4 years that a student is there or is it a one time thing?

@cllp2023 great question! Yes, it will be honored every year that a student is eligible for the Pell Grant. So it is important that the student renews their FAFSA every academic year.
