University of Rochester Class of 2021 Regular Decision Discussion

I too got the Rush Rhees Scholarship of 20k/year… @ManaManaWegi

Is the Meliora Alumni Scholarship renewable every year, or is it a one-time scholarship?

Accepted with IB Scholarship for 25K!!

@aquapt wait so in colleges across the US, students from other countries would not be getting in like previous years?

Received the Dean’s Scholarship!

@akizaka46 , I don’t mean that colleges won’t admit students from other countries. I mean that some international students will have more trouble getting student visas, etc. in order to accept those offers. (Not saying this is a good thing. At all.) (And congrats on the Dean’s Scholarship. My D got that too. )

@akizaka46 No what @aquapt said above was pure speculation I believe. In fact, UR’s president released a statement saying that recent political developments will not impact the university’s admissions process and prospective international students will receive the same consideration and opportunities as in years past. The statement also said the UR is monitoring things and will try to assist as much as possible in getting student visas and other documents arranged but of course there’s a lot of uncertainty about how that will play out at present. They’ve actually been really good about responding to questions about this stuff you can check the ISO website for more details but I don’t think internationals will be at a disadvantage this year or that it’ll impact the waitlist much if at all.

@thisgirlcodes , yes, it’s speculation at this point, although not entirely unfounded as there have already been, for example, medical students who have been prevented from entering the country for their residencies. My point was only that it’s possible that yield among international students may go down, either because of actual immigration practices on the part of the US or because of how our attitudes toward immigrants are perceived abroad. I definitely did not mean to say that UR or any other university was changing its admissions practices. And perhaps things will stabilize and these concerns will not play out. I hope that is the case. I merely remarked to the waitlisted applicant that it was possible that past patterns of taking virtually no students off the waitlist might not hold in these unpredictable times.

I got waitlisted :((

hey would you mind sharing the IB points you applied with and the conditions they set for your final grades. Please and thanks

@Emmacat11 hey would you mind sharing the IB points you applied with and the conditions they set for your final. Please and thanks

@aquapt You raise a very valid concern and it’s true that all we can really do at this point is hope that everything turns out okay and students aren’t denied the opportunity to study in the US because of the current administration’s decisions but I doubt that, even if the worst happens, the waitlist will be impacted. Colleges generally admit more students than there are spots available at the school because they know some will be unable or unwilling to attend for whatever reason so they admit more than strictly necessary so that they’ll pretty much always meet their target no matter what happens. That’s not to say that people absolutely won’t be taken off the waitlist and I really hope that some of you guys especially from CC are because you seem great  but it’s unlikely that a lack of international students will cause UR to turn to the waitlist to fill their class. Anyway, this is all conjecture, all we can do is speculate but admissions knows what they’re doing and no matter what happens at least we can be sure that UR’s class of 2021 will be filed with absolutely amazing students

Waitlisted international!

Quote from article: Because application deadlines at several larger colleges had passed before Mr. Trump’s travel ban was announced, some universities are more worried about the “yield” — the number of students offered admission who end up enrolling, said Frances Leslie, vice provost for the graduate division at the University of California, Irvine.
