@pickpocket Thanks for sharing your D’s experience at UR. I value humanities and Take5 program seems to give balance to those who are in rigorous programs such as engineering.
Is the engineering program less structured than other core engineering schools or “liberal” like Brown? I don’t want my D to be in a pressure cooker engineering school, but an environment where collaboration is encouraged - I believe women need this and are better at it.
@renaissancesoul the reason I say the rankings are useless is because literally no engineering company looks at the rankings when hiring a senior out of college. They may consider the reputation of the school and how difficult it is to get into in order to make a judgement on the applicant’s intelligence/work ethic, but the curriculum is essentially the same at most reputable schools.
From a grad school (phd) prospective, they may peek at the ranking, but they really care more about the quality of the overall undergrad university, your grades, and what research experience you have. I would say that any student who goes to U of R has a leg up for grad schools because of how easy it is to get involved with undergraduate research.
Masters degrees are more similar to undergrad in that it doesn’t matter as much where you got it from when entering industry.
I would have to second all of what @pickpocket said in regards to what U of R offers for undergrad engineering- balance, collaboration, professors, etc…
I was probably on the “lower half” of admitted students in my program from a statistical perspective. Going to a school with people who were “better than me” statistically really drove me to work hard and grow as an engineering student - I learned a lot of good study habits and thinking skills from friends in my program (U of R is very collaborative). Essentially, I felt that being surrounded by very smart and driven people helped me to improve as an engineer and on a personal level. This was just my experience at U of R getting my B.S. and M.S. In ME. I’m now a product development and R&D engineer at a large global company for reference.
Like I said, there are plenty of fine schools out there and I think a student could have a similar and enriching experience elsewhere, especially in engineering. But this is just how I look back on my experience at U of R, and how I think rankings are (not) valued in the engineering industry.
Best of luck to your daughter, I’m sure she will do well if she graduates with a degree in ME!
@RocEng Thanks for sharing your experience and thoughts - very helpful and insightful. I mentioned rankings insofar as the noticeable drop in UR ranking from 2017 to 2018. I’m not one giving too much weight on rankings either. My D studied Pre-Engineering as a major in high school in a very rigorous program. Basically, I told her essentially the same thing you’ve expounded here. I told her to do well where every she goes and to have her eyes set on getting a masters. We’ll soon know where she’ll be for the next 4 years. Thanks for your well wishes!
Has anyone on the alternate list been accepted yet? I called and they said some acceptance letters won’t be sent out until June, but I’d really rather not wait that long
@ekdad212 I may have read it wrong all along, but it appears UR’s GRADUATE engineering program is ranked #45, and undergraduate program is #75. Still, quite a disparity between under and masters.
@rabbit84 June seems like long ways away, especially as the college my D committed to just increased her financial aid package by 10% and its engineering ranking is tge same as UR. As @RocEng mentioned undergraduate engineering programs at these caliber colleges seem to be quite equivalent to each other more or less.
@fyodorspen we haven’t either, and was starting to wonder about that. On their Tumblr page Admissions said to call if you haven’t received it by the end of the week. I’ll call today and let you know what they say.
@fyodorspen I called, and the office said if you had not received the package by Friday, you should let them know so that they could send a replacement.
Having said that, we got the package yesterday. Housing form is very straightforward, will probably return it this weekend.
If anybody knows, for meal plans are freshmen only allowed to choose between the pass plans? Cause I noticed Lovejoy is considered group 2 which has a declining option, but then again Lovejoy houses both freshmen and upperclassmen yes?
@fyodorspen aw man really? Dang it haha thanks though. So which plan did u decide to go with? I’m not sure how to tell which would be the least expensive option.
@lifeisastruggle tbh I balled out and went for the Meliora Unlimited because I want more declining and I’m not sure if 150 meals would last my greedy self the whole semester, so…
@fyodorspen HAHA well you have a point there! I guess then for me I’ll go with the Meliora plan as well. Though it’s really too bad that declining can only be used for food items
