University of South Carolina Fine Arts requirement

I am beginning to do some college research for my D2024. USC seems to have a fine arts requirement (“Art appreciation, art history or performance in one of the fine arts”). Does dance get included as performance? She is a ballerina in a pre professional company. Will this count? Or will she have to take an actual art course her senior year?

My understanding is that a dance class counts.

But would dancing with a company outside of school count for this “class”?

Hence, why I specifically added “class.”

OP can research further with the university directly, or can await feedback from a user with first-hand knowledge. But if dance is purely an EC, it would be viewed the same as art or music or theater as an EC. Which IMO is that it doesn’t count.

I believe you are asking about admissions requirements, not once on campus. Several SC Public Universities have this arts admissions requirements as a high school requirement in their list, but there are exceptions to this. Honestly, it keeps the arts alive in our high schools here and some end up taking several.

Her outside involvement in a dance company will most likely meet admissions needs, but it is good to reach out and then document that in several places.

Yes, for college admissions. Ok will send an email to USC and see if this requirement would be waived because of her extensive outside involvement in the performing arts. We are in PA and don’t have such a course requirement for graduation.

I would email and ask. When my daughter applied, the school had economics as a requirement (I believe the state requires it), but our state does require it and it was not in her senior schedule. They understood and said it was no problem (she had three or four years of social studies, just not econ) and just looked at her transcript in that light. She’s happily in her sophomore year there.

I emailed admissions and and they said they could substitute with another elective. Thanks for your reply!
