University of Virginia Class of 2021 EA Discussion Thread

I can’t either ea21

I’m able to log in, yet I didn’t check earlier today though so maybe it changed.

“Anyone think it’s possible it’ll come out during the week?”

For gods sake, people, just read/believe what Dean J writes!!!

“We always notify EA applicants by the end of January. We don’t set a date in advance so we can release decisions on whatever day the Dean declares everything finalized. We also try to do the release in the evening, so students are more likely to check with a parent nearby and not a crowd of classmates.” — Dean J

I’m sticking with Wednesday evening. And the Steelers.

@northwesty No need to be rude, buddy. Nothing in that little excerpt of yours explicitly says anything about weekdays; I was questioning whether or not the trend of Friday release dates would be broken, not whether or not it will be released in the evening.

@cisobelm Dean J’s post clarifies that decisions may come out on ANY day in which they are ready and that decisions are not posted on any particular day (in this case, a Friday). I believe that @northwesty was referring to this portion of Dean J’s post and not the part referring to the evening.

I don’t intend to lecture on other’s behavior but please do remember that this is a time of heightened stress for all and be conscientious of that.

Northwesty - Patriots all the way!!!
Good luck to all applicants - UVA is a slight reach for my D who has solid stats but being OOS probably not good enough as it seems they require Ivy League stats for OOS students to have a really shot…but she is accepted at our state flagship (UMass) which at least is more affordable for us !

I just want my letter of rejection and just peace out already

^totally the same

“I was questioning whether or not the trend of Friday release dates would be broken.”

There is no trend. Last year was on a Thursday. The past few years decisions were done after about three full work weeks in January after the New Years holiday was over. This year, Dean J says they are running a little behind. Which means no one should have been expecting decisions last week.

Decisions come out as soon as they are ready, regardless of the day. And always in the evening. Sometime middle of this week seems a reasonable expectation. Good luck to all.

Britlass – agree that the admit competition gets really tough for unhooked OOS applicants. But you always have a shot – just like the Steelers do today…

@britlass I can definitely confirm. I (and a lot of other students) applied to schools like Princeton as well. The difference between UVA and ivy league admissions for OOS is starting to disintegrate unfortunately.

Since it’s so tough for OOS students what is the necessary ACT/SAT and GPA/rank to get in if you’re not from VA?

@mose4242 I’m in-state (thank god!), so this is just speculation, but I’d guess you’d want a 33/2200+ as well as a rank somewhere well in the top 5% (top 1-2% would certainly help) to truly be competitive OOS. Again, that’s just my best guess.

Fingers crossed for tomorrow! I know it’s all speculation, but if they can be released on a Wednesday, who’s to say they won’t be released on a Monday?

As for the OOS comments, I am an out of state applicant and feel no more confident in my chances at competitive state schools (UVA and UNC) than I do at some of my higher level schools like Cornell and washu. It has gotten so competitive. Good luck to everyone and fingers crossed!

I have a question for those of you that seem to know UNC well. Do you know/think that because the standards are so much higher for the OOS applicants that the OOS students do better once matriculated because they were stronger candidates to begin with? I know schools like UNC and UVA have many IS applicants with stellar stats as well, but when you look at the average stats for the OOS kids vs. the average stats of the IS kids, it makes me wonder how that all plays out in GPA’s and overall success at the school.

@collegemomjam My D1 graduated from UNC last year, she was in-state honors but often commented on how smart the OOS students seemed to be. I think it does make a difference. D2 won’t even consider UNC but has applied OOS to UVA. I’ll miss that in state tuition.

@CuriousDad2021 thanks. That makes sense. Honestly, while I totally get the draw to schools like UNC and UVA, for so many great reasons, I often wonder why the OOS kids want to get in so badly when they are held to so much of a higher standard, my kid included. I guess if you want that state flagship school experience and your own state doesn’t offer that kind of a school, it makes sense. (In your case, it does though!). Good luck to you guys!

@collegemomjam In my D2’s case, her HS nominated her for the Jefferson Scholarship. That elevated her interested in UVA quite a bit and drove her decision to apply. She’s still in the interviewing rounds for that but the odds of winning, even with the nomination, are very low. While she is concerned about the disparity between IS and OOS stats, I don’t think it will be a show stopper.

UVA IS is one of the best cost/reputation/admissibility equations in higher ed, as demonstrated by UVA’s 58% yield on IS offers. That is in the Penn/Brown/Dartmouth zone, but without using binding ED. That’s 67% of the students.

A good chunk of the OOS students are UVA legacies. While they pay the higher OOS prices, UVA says they get considered as IS-ers for purposes of admissibility. So for some legacy OOS kids, UVA is the highest ranked school they will get into. So the equation for them is also pretty strong. My SWAG is that this group is about 11% of the students.

The value proposition for unhooked OOS is good too, but not nearly as unique (as indicated by the 22% yield rate for OOS offers overall). An unhooked kid who gets into UVA OOS will also have a number of other strong choices with great reputations and similar (or perhaps lower) net prices. UVA gets their fair share of these OOS kids, but loses the majority of them to the other swanky schools that an unhooked OOS applicant is likely to get into.

@northwesty…thanks for that excellent summary. Very helpful and makes a lot of sense. We will know soon. Maybe when everyone starts posting decisions the OOS unhooked kids can post where else they got in. That would be very interesting information to see.

Reaaaallly hoping it’s today
