hey guys, I just wanted to make a thread for NYU transfer students.
I applied to CAS as a transfer student from Virginia Tech. Im a junior psychology major with an in-major GPA of 3.7. I applied to begin my studies in the summer semester so im anxiously waiting for a decision.

For those that applied to NYU as a transfer student, feel free to talk about anything on this board; from admissions to decisions.

Also for those of you that were accepted or rejected, can you please post your stats, when you applied, and heard a decision? Thanks guys and everyone good luck! Keep in touch! =)

There was a guy on another board that applied to steinhardt and got accepted. I talked to him over aim couple of minutes ago. He had a GPA of 3.7 at his current institute and a 1300 SAT score. He also said he submitted 3 recommendations.

It feels as though all the "exceptional" students were notified of their decisions early. I know another person that applied to CAS that had gotten in already.

Oh yea and i found out that there were a little over 4200 applicants this year which is good news! Last year there were a little close to 4700 applicants!!! =)

my overall GPA is lower than yours, but i emphasized how my in-major gpa is high. Im a psychology major at my current university and I applied as a psychology major to NYU, so im hoping that my high in-major gpa will somewhat compensate for my low overall GPA. I also have some good research experience that I hope will be beneficial when they evaluate my application. But im sure you still have a good shot getting into NYU. Lets just hope for the best!!!

HS: 4.0 u/w Rank 1 of 400-500ish
SAT I: 1380 - 720M, 660V
SAT II: IC: 660, WR: 620, US His: 600
College GPA: 3.68 cumulative through three semesters (but my last semester was a 3.46)
Midterm GPA: 3.78
Lots of ECs
Submitted one recommendation letter.
Applied via Common App. on April 1.
Decision received via mail on April 18.
I attend Ithaca College, where I am a journalism major with an economics minor... although I didn't take any journalism or economics classes since I needed to take mathematics and an accounting course since I applied to the business programs of my top three choices (all of which I'm still waiting to hear from).
I was surprised to hear back so quickly.

Toph, did NYU request to see your mid-term grades? Around end of MArch, NYU admissions emailed me requesting to see my mid-term grades. Im not sure if this is a good sign or a bad sign but fortunately, I managed to get all above A- in my classes.

No, they did not request them. Actually I can't guarentee that they actually received/looked at them. I sent them because of my GPA from the previous semester. Honestly, I felt like it misrepresented me. I didn't want schools to think that I was on a downward trend. Plus for some of my schools, some of the courses I was taking this semester were pre-req's. Basically, I received 3 B+'s last semester in the 3 journalism courses along with an A in an econ course. And I didn't decide not to study journalism because of the grades, I decided I wasn't going to be a journalism earlier in the semester. I also took a lifeguarding class pass/fail (you couldn't not take it pass/fail) because I wanted to be certified. I'm going to try and lifeguard a couple days a week, especially since my internship this summer is unpaid. I could make excuses for each of the B+'s, but I'm not going to do so. And really, some of them might not even be valid excuses. Needless to say, I think that the gpa for that semester is not the norm, and I didn't want that to be the last gpa they looked at. After I found out my midterm grades (and my finals grades may/hopefully be higher), I decided I should definitely send them to all the schools that I applied to.

I think a 3.7 in major is good. By the way... GOOD LUCK!!!! :)

Congratulations, Toph! You have great stats. When did you send in your mid-term grades? I think I should have done that. I have a cumulative 3.73 GPA, but my last GPA from last semester was a 3.42 because I messed up in my Calc II class, and received a C. Right now, I am taking 25 units, and I maintaining A's in all my classes, so I think that would improve my overall application. Anyway, it doesn't matter because I will not be accpeted. :(

Why do you think you won't be accepted? Your GPA is high enough to fall into the competetive range. I don't think NYU will look down on you overall because of one lousy grade!

I probably sent mine the last week of March. April 1 was that week. I might've sent it April 1, but I want to say that I sent it earlier that week. Not sure though. Perhaps you could overnight it? Don't know if it's too late. Perhaps call and see if they made a decision first. Or maybe even if they have, you could ask them to re-evaluate with your midterm grades? I did that with WashU (they have rolling admissions for transfers). I asked them to wait on their decision until they saw my midterm grades. I'm not sure if that made a difference or not. But I doubt it would hurt.

I have two C's total and two B's. My grades in math are awful (considering I am a business major)

Trig = C
Caclulus I = B
Calculus II = B

My GPA is okay. It could have been better if I did mess around so much and procrastinate. My SAT IIs are so awful that they board on shameful.

Other than that, I think the remainder of my application reflect a commitment to excellence.
SAT: 1470
Age: 17 (not sure if this is a + or a -)
1 Really good recommendation
Strong ECs
Decent essay

I guess I am just pessemestic because I was rejected from UNC-Chapel Hill, U. Chicago, and WUSTL. I applied to thirteen really competitive business/economics programs, and I have not received any acceptances yet.

Also... if I remember correctly, you have a ton of credits, don't you? Like over a 100? Maybe that is hurting you?

I don't know, you seem to have impressive stats to me. I'm surprised you didn't get into UNC. U. Chicago is a tough transfer. Chicago's acceptance rate for transfers was only like 25% last year (opposed to the aprrox. 40% acceptance rate for freshman).

Good luck. You'll get in somewhere, and it'll work out. Remember, applying tho 13 really good programs, means even if you get into one of them, you are in good shape. Don't get down on yourself, things will work out as long as you continue to work hard.

I do have a lot of units. I will have 116 units at the end of the Spring semester, and currently I am enrolled in 25 units. I guess I wracked up a lot of units trying to complete major prereqs, general breadth requirements, and AA (Business Administration) requirements. Plus, I have additional units for student government, newspaper, and TAing. Some of my units don't transfer.

I suppose I should be more confident, and I meant that I applied to 13 additional schools other than the 3 that rejected me. Besides, like you said because I applied to good programs, I will be in a good spot even if I only receive on acceptance. Thanks again, Toph.

I'm waiting to hear back from Gallatin. Ahh, aren't you guys nervous? It's a death walk to the post office every day. Anyway, anyone else trying for Gallatin?

I got accepted to CAS on the 14 or something like that. I have to reply by May 2, and I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IM DOING. This is a serious source of stress for me. I am appealing for more FA because $44000 minus $7500 scholarships is still WAY TOO MUCH. And I have only been to NYC once for like 4 days and I currently live in CA, about as far from NY as possible, and I dont even know if I liked the area. Ok, anyways, stats:

SAT- 1380
SAT II- Wr: 750, US Hist: 760, Math 2c: 740
transferring from CA community college after one year (45 units including APs)
GPA- 3.7
Very few ECs
submitted one recommendation from a high school teacher.
I applied online around March 10 as an undecided major.

Im also really worried about meeting people. NYC is big and I am shy. I dont know if its for me. And my parents really dont want me to go. sigh
