Update on Many Villanova Matters

My son and I spent a great weekend at Villanova. Here's a few things I was told or read in the student newspaper:

Tuition is going up 3% next year. That is a modest increase compared to increases at many other colleges.

The University is endeavoring to meet 100% of financial need this year. The amount of financial aid has been increasing steadily in recent years. An article in the student newspaper quoted University officials as saying they realize they need to try to meet 100% of need because many of their competitors do (such as Bucknell, Boston College, College of the Holy Cross, etc.).

The number of required classes has now been reduced. The core ethics/philosophy/Augustinian courses continue in place. However, students have greater choice in other classes, such as only having to take one course in a certain department instead of two.

The second floor of the library is being renovated, and air conditioning is being added in several dorms that are not currently air conditioned.

The University continues to add majors, minors and concentrations. The latest is Theater, which is scheduled to become an available major in a year. It is now only a minor. This is while many other colleges are deleting majors.

The Admissions office says they definitely do not check Facebook pages of applicants. One spokesman said, from an Augustinian perspective, the mind says that it is not worth the time, and the heart says that students deserve some privacy.

There are Economics majors available in both the Business School and the Liberal Arts program. The requirements between the two are different, although most economic classes apply for both. We were told that it is extremely difficult to transfer into the Business School from another college, unless you are willing to attend college for an additional year. There also is a Business minor available to students who attend Arts and Sciences, but it is competitive to be accepted into it. Many students also attend the Summer Business Institute, which has easier admissions, and allows a student to receive a business minor in one summer.

Villanova students are incredibly nice. Is there something in the water?

You neglected to mention how good the food is ;)

Thanks for the update! We weren’t able to travel in for the weekend.

…and how good-looking all the young men and women are ;)

I am still struck by the whiteness of the student body. Some people say, if you see a male African American student, it is assumed he is a varsity athlete. But I was also struck by how relatively few Asian, South Asian and Hispanic students I saw, compared to other colleges.

I think it is no worse then many other,Catholic schools of similar size…And i believe it is the religious affiliation that causes this more then anything else

I just found out that the friend that my son plans to roommate with at Villanova is an African American.

Did anyone else get an email from Villanova telling them to check my nova for their financial aid award? Is that good news???

If it’s the email I think you’re talking about, I’m pretty sure everyone got that email and it basically says check myNova for status of financial application withthe award being posted on March 25.

What a great weekend. Villanova knows how to do a “sell visit.” D was incredibly impressed with the whole event. It does seem to be a place of community, mentoring, and caring. The Key Club and Ambassadors were amazing, the a cappella groups were wonderful, the student speakers were impressive, and the campus was appealing. 'Nova bumped up several spots on D’s list.

Best of luck to all! You definitely won’t regret attending the 'Nova Nation :)

if anyone has any questions, feel free to ask… I’m a current student there

any news on RD date?

According to Villanova’s website, they will be posting RD announcements on March 18th.

BM:Great find!

On MyNova:
By March 18, 2011 Regular Decision notices will be posted on-line.

Where did you see this? I don’t see it on MyNova.

it says late Match on myNova…

If you log into My Nova, click on the “admission” tab at the top left of the page, then go to the bottom of the “Times and Deadlines” section, found on the center of the admissions page, it states that “By March 18, regular decision notices will be posted on-line.”

[Villanova University: Important Dates](http://www1.villanova.edu/villanova/admission/calendar.html)

Important dates:
Reg. Decision by March 18th online

last year, on march 18th or 19th, whichever day the decisions came out…i received my acceptance online by 10:45 am… if that helps… and you don’t even have to look anywhere specifically on mynova either… when i logged on, it said “Congratulations” and there was a video welcoming me to the nova nation in the dead center of the screen lol… best of luck to all of you!!!

Have any EA students received info about scholarships (other than presidential)? The portal says March 25 for fin. aid but I don’t know if that includes merit aid. Would my D have already been notified if she had gotten anything?
