Updated Bubble Chart from PSU Admissions

PSU has finally updated their famous (or, perhaps, infamous) admissions "bubble chart." The latest version is dated October of 2010. PSU states in the fine print that "This graph represents the academic credentials of students offered first-year, baccalaureate admission for fall 2010."

For those of you who were familiar with the previous version, the blue bubble section has shrunk considerably.

Here's the link:
http://admissions.psu.edu/info/counselors/bubble_chart.pdf

That is very interesting. It seems to show an increased weight to higher SAT scores.

The shift in the blue range between the two charts occurs with combined SAT ranges of 1600 to 2000. It appears within this range that the GPA has been weighted slightly less and the SAT slightly more.

Combined SAT GPA 2008 GPA 2010

1600 4.0 4.1
1700 3.9 4.0
1800 3.8 3.9
1900 3.8 3.7
2000 3.7 3.6

This is an interesting shift as those with SAT scores in the 1600 to 1800 range now must have a higher GPA, whereas those in the 1900 to 2000 range can have a lower GPA than before.

So, how likely is likely. If my daughter is a 'blue dot" on the new chart, should we get our hopes up?

Quiet Type - is your daughter at PSU? Architecture? or did she go with VT? Is she enjoying it?

I know we’ve posted on the same strings before but I don’t recall. My daughter visited both schools this summer and is on the fence. She seems to be favoring engineering now - architectural engineering at PSU seems to be her focus.

Love that fact that PSu is rising so fast in US news and so many other lists. Above Maryland…Delaware…It used to be the “easy in” school for our large NJ Public, now…not so much…
My son is definitely in the black…booooo

Bennnie, My S is in ArchE, but you will find me on the Architecture threads from years past. He definitely has the engineering gene and when we discovered the ArchE option it just clicked.

Another ArchE parent here! Do we need to have a special club or something??? :)

Gah! This is insane! I am RIGHT in between the Yellow and Blue. Do you think that since my entire application is already in - and has been for weeks now - I have a good shot at UP?

the gpa on the axis is weighted, right?

Right… because you can’t make over a 4.0 unweighted… LOL.

^^^
From the attached instruction sheet:

“To use the graph, plot the student’s cumulative high school grade point average and best combined SAT score from a single test date. The scale
used is based on a 4.0 grading system that takes into consideration weighted grades”

Also keep in mind if you checked the box that said you would consider the summer option, you most likely will be offered a spot in the summer. I was in the higher yellow section and I was told I wasn’t accepted in the fall at UP unless I came during the summer.

Heh, I’m in the black part and a freshman at Penn State. Then again, my situation might be rare, as I’m both a resident of State College and I started in the summer.

If you live in State College UP is your branch campus.

Im hoping that this chart is at least a bit accurate because with my new SAT scores and my GPA, Im well within the blue section and I put that I would start in the summer, so Im hoping that all this will put me in a good spot for admission to UPark.

If you’re well into the blue, I think it’s safe to say you’ll be accepted into UP no problem. I’m sure you didn’t even need to go in the summer, although summer session (and LEAP) was a great experience for my personally.

^^^

Ok thanks!! When did you recieve your decision from Penn State? I put in my application in the second week of Sept so I think were all trying to guage when we might recieve our decisions.

i also hope this bubble chart is something to give me comfort as i await for my app status to change! becuase i am in the blue as of now!

did everyone here apply early action?

PSU has rolling, no ED, EA

totes what i meant, sorry!

I’m confused what the GPA side is. My unweighted GPA is a 3.5 and then my weighted GPA is a 4.8… which one do I use to read the chart?
