Work:
I'm working at a grocery store this summer

So what do you think my chances would be for:
University of Pennsylvania (Early-Decision)

-AND-

University of Maryland (In-State)
University of Michigan
University of Virginia
Johns Hopkins University
Northwestern University
Washington University in St. Louis
Cornell University
Brown University

Id say you’ve got good chances. You’ve got great ec’s so a good essay and recomendations will hopefully get you in.

I don’t know about all that in\reach\match stuff though.

It’s lacking. Your ECs don’t really scream special, and according to what you have there you have no accomplishments. ECs are very much like a grocery list, with the exception of 1. Maybe I’m being too harsh but I’m having a tough time seeing you in.

UPenn ED: reach
University of Maryland (In-State): in
University of Michigan: match
University of Virginia: match
Johns Hopkins University:high match
Northwestern University: match
Washington University in St. Louis: high match
Cornell University: high match
Brown University: reach

Your ECs aren’t so bad as the poster above said. I think you demonstrate depth in your music and with the newspaper. Any chance of getting a good internship this summer? I know it’s hard in addition to working (I’m in the same situation), but I think it will help the EC situation. Ditto w/ any tutoring or additional community service. Do you have any hooks (First gen, URM, etc?). If you do, your chances are much better, especially as you have a stellar GPA and pretty good SATs.

For Cornell, how much do you think it will matter that my grandpa went there? Veterinary School class of 1940 lol. I’m going up for his 70th reunion in June and only like four alumni are left from his class haha.

ECs are pretty generic. Ivy leagues will be extremely tough to get in just going by what’s written. High GPA and high SAT don’t really mean crap without supporting ECs, essays, and accomplishments.
Alwayshungry, know what you’re talking about if you are going to be attacking someone.

A lot of times legacy stuff don’t really help if you don’t apply ED. If I remember correctly, Veterinary School isn’t undergrad in Cornell. Typically legacies only apply if that person attended undergrad. I don’t remember how it works in Cornell, so look it up.

I would also agree with geek, EC’s aren’t extraordinary although they are still good. I think for Ivies EC’s are more demanding then they would be for regular colleges. But, good GPA and SAT scores. I’d say:
UPenn ED: low reach/reach due to EC’s
University of Maryland (In-State): Def in.
University of Michigan: Low match
University of Virginia: Low Match
Johns Hopkins University:high match
Northwestern University: High match
Washington University in St. Louis: high match
Cornell University: high match/Low reach
Brown University: Low reach/ Reach

@geek, I dont think Alwayshungry was trying to attack you, he was simply disagreeing with what you had previously posted.

Good luck!

UPenn ED: reach

So we have a lot of the same schools and similar stats, chance me back!

Oh my bad, he did do undergraduate there at the Agricultural School. Also, geek if you see this, you seem to be one of the most realistic people on here, so would you mind chancing me for the other schools?

I only give my opinion and advice on the schools I know on a reasonable level. I don’t know anything about non-Ivy schools (with one or two exceptions), so I don’t want to give you an opinion on something I have no clue about.

you are a match for all the school except Brown and UPenn

chance me back

what would my chance be at cornell ED with a grandpa who went there?

haha, I am struggling with if I want to do an ED for Penn or cornell too. I think Cornell would be much more likely for you, though it depends how you compare to others in your school. Of your schools the Ivies are the only real reaches, with Cornell, then Brown, then Penn. UVA and Johns Hopkins are probably high matches, UMD is basically guaranteed.

Chance me back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/898730-chances-duke-penn-cornell.html

thanks guys
