UPenn ED Class of 2023

I’d guess maybe 30% acceptance 20% deferred hopefully! 34 ACT, 3.83 UW GPA (strong upward trend though 3.7 Freshman year - 4.0 junior), 770 Math 2 700 Spanish and some - in my opinion - great EC’s (starting a nonprofit, studying abroad, co-founding a startup for two years, going to a top US entrepreneurship summer program, etc.)

I applied SEAS. @kindablue

I hope that applying to nursing helps but Penn does have the best undergrad nursing school in the country … so not like it’ll be easy… but yeah i didn’t found a nonprofit or start a club or anything like that. I have heard that penn defers less often than they reject so here’s to hoping I get deferred if i am not accepted directly

I have great academic qualifications (4.0 GPA, 36 ACT, 800 Math II and Physics scores, 5s on all APs, top 1%), pretty good ECs (Captain of soccer team, community service, studying business abroad, 3 honor societies, President of MUN) and legacy whose parent is an active alumnus, so I hope I have okay chances! I am applying to Wharton, which is where my mother went so that is the department of Penn that she primarily engages with (although she got a dual degree from Wharton and CAS because she’s awesome :)).

That’s great! I wish you guys the best of luck. Hope we all get accepted thursday!

@hsclassof2023 does that 4.0 mean all A’s (asking cuz it works differently at different schools? also, im sure you will get in. When you have legacy on your side, all you need is high stats to get in.

@collegeboi2023 I think my stats are okay (1510 SAT 770 R 740 M, two subject tests 700+, and such) but I really worked hard on my essays. I live in the suburbs of Philly. I also am Muslim and an URM with good ECs and leadership positions relevant to my major (Poli Sci).

Does anyone know what acceptance “chances” actually mean? Like if I apply 100 times, I only get in 6 out of those 100 times? What does that percentage actually represent? I always saw probability of admissions as a 0 or a 100 – you either get in or you don’t

@nellyone right, but it works the same way as weather. Reporters say 60% chance of rain, even though there are only two outcomes - yes rain or no rain.

@collegeboi2023 Yes it is all As. I think a 4.0 UW corresponds to a 95-100 UW? (but I am not too sure about that!) Also thank you for your positive feedback!

@collegeboi2023 Interesting comparison… but I still can’t physically rationalize it

@nellyone basically, someone can have a really good chance of getting in (high stats, lots of demonstrated interest, great essays, focused ECs, etc.) and it is likely that they would get in. However, no matter how “likely” you are to get in, it all depends on what happens when the admissions officers are making your decision. Nobody can guarantee whether or not someone will get in, because they have no idea what the admissions officers will think when reading his/her/their application. However, people can make rational guesses on whether someone will get in based on their resume.

@hsclassof2023 right. Even if someone’s chance of getting in is like 2%, we can’t dismiss it, because it is still a chance, and they could potentially get in.

I have asked this question before, but I wanted to get more opinions/information about what students think. Does Penn defer more often than they reject? I have heard through my own thread that they reject more often, which is what I said in one of my earlier posts in this thread. However, I have also heard that some Ivies are infamous for deferring many applicants.

@kindablue penn is not one of those Ivies. Last year they deferred 888 students and accepted 99 of them RD (I believe)

Accept or reject?
I guess they never accept huh

you got a defer?
I hope it doesn’t hurt ya!

Penn gon’ find another applicant and it won’t miss ya!
It gon’ skrt and hit the dab like like an Ivy!

(if you know you know lol)

Which is nice because if you get deferred ED you know that you actually still have a shot, not that they are just stringing you along to reject you, and if you get rejected ED you have lots of time to move on and focus on other schools

@kindablue I talked to a Penn AO and she confirmed that they defer less than they accept

Also, I applied ED to Wharton Public Policy and Global Analysis but I really have no idea about my chances. What do you guys think? http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/2082361-chance-me-for-ivy-leagues.html#latest

This might sound stupid and i don’t plan on doing it but can you call the admissions office and ask for your decision if your too scared to log in lol?
