Apply to every congressman in your state who can sponsor a page, however first make sure with them that they would be willing to sponsor someone outside of their district. It doesn’t really matter how close they are.

Second, luckily my congressman and I align with the same party ( nobama:)) so I did not really think much about parties. However, pages do work seperately based on their members party and do perform different duties. But at the end of the day everyone goes to Sleep in the same building so it’s nbd. I would just want to get to Washington even if my member was a member of the polish communist party of the 40s… Just being there is the best part hahah!

I think I covered all your Qs , but not sure . Feel free to ask more if you need, I love talking about the program as it’s truly one of a kind

hi! is anyone else having trouble finding a sponsor? There are 19 representatives in my state, and I’ve already called 15 of them. Of those 15, the majority of them cannot sponsor a student and the one or two who could said they would only take students from their own district.

If it really turns out that there is no representative in my state that can sponsor me, are there other alternative paths? Would looking for sponsors from neighboring states be a little pushy?

so have all the summer senate pages been notified by now if they were selected? Do they do it via email, mail or phone? I have heard nothing either way.

I live in Pennsylvania’s 7th district, and my district’s representative is Patrick Meehan (R), but he can’t sponsor a student. I’d really appreciate your help! Thanks!

stocker, I applied to the senate page program (sorry if that’s not your area of expertise) and the due date was March 31st. I’ve called for the status of my application a week ago and have not received any news back.

Is there something I should/could do? I have so many other things I could be doing in the summer, and I can’t do anything until I find out if I’ll be going to DC or not! The page program is my first priority, but how much longer will it be?

I’m from PA too, 15th district… Our conressman already has somebody though… at this point, all i can suggest is for you to contact the rest of the congressmen in PA. The sponsoring member does have to be from your home state, and unfortunately Meehan is still a new member of Congress… it does go by seniority… If you cant find anyone to sponsor you, you could try contacting the speaker’s office and seeing if they would make an exception to the in state rule which I believe has happenned before. If you’re a sophomore then you can apply for next school year too. Let me know if you need more help.

@isaiah in the House it takes about a month for them to approve everything and get back to the applicant. Therefore, I would give it a few more days, maybe til May 2nd or so, and then call the senator’s office if you don’t hear back. If they still cant answer, try calling whoever runs the Senate page program in the senate. For example, in the House, the speaker’s office is in charge of everything, so I assume in the senate, it’s up to the party leader so you could contact Reid or McConnell’s office depending on your senator’s party.

the list is not available to the public. the only way you can find out is by calling the members of your state, which you should begin doing asap. a gop member is more likely to be able to sponsor a page as they obviously (and thankfully ) have the majority right now.

@stocker93, i have called about 15 offices so far with all of them saying that they are not eligible! I’m still calling but it seems like i’m going to have to get sponsorship from a district a lot farther from where I am. Do you know if that brings down my chances? Gosh, i want this so bad and this is the last time I can apply!

Hmmm, well it really depends on who’s selecting the nominee from the Congressman’s office. In some cases it may be less likely if you are out of their district/far from their district, or may not have any impact at all. I think you should just do your best to find an eligible rep and just apply no matter how far they are.

If it doesn’t work out for you, you could always look at internship opportunities!

Wow, i feel so rejected. The few who are accepting applicants say they will only take applicants for people in their district. Well i still have a lot more to call but still I think i’m pretty pessimistic at this point :(.

It is disappointing when it’s out of your hands like that… I’d rather be able to apply and just get rejected than not even be able to apply…

Like i said though, keep looking until you’ve called every congressman, as frustrating as it may be.

and an internship is really the closest thing you can get and an exciting opportunity in itself, i would really look into it if there is anything available still!

Thank you so much for all your help! It’s really great that your giving everyone so much insight about this, have you done this program in the past? and I think i have about 15 more offices to call (called about 35 so far) but I think i may have found two offices that will accept my application thank god haha!!!

@stocker93: thank you for all the information you are providing everyone. My son has been very interested in serving as a page as well, but we live in Colorado, and it appears that NO senators or representatives get to nominate a page this summer, I think because most of them are fairly new to their positions. It has been quite disappointing for him. You mention internship possibilities… can you give some examples of that? Any time I’ve heard of internships, they have been for college students only. Are you aware of some that are open to high school students?

There are plenty of internship opportunities for high schoolers. Is there any specific area/field you were looking at? That would help narrow down the selection of special programs (although, many deadlines have already passed). Keep in mind, however, that many internships for high schoolers are not paid internships.

Also, try simply contacting professors at local universities for research opportunities or local businesses for marketing or business intern openings. This is a great alternative to those internship program things.

good thing california has soooo many districts!!! I was actually accepted to be in the program right now (Spring session) but there was a big discrepency so I ended up just working in my Congressman’s office this spring, but i will be in the actual program this summer… i got all the knowledge on it from working in my congressman’s office… anyway, good luck with the 2 that can accept your app!!

@mum

Most internships are only for college students, but there are some congressional offices that will give them to exceptional high school students. You would have to contact your states reps and senators for specific info on that. For example, Senator Lautenberg of NJ does give some internships to HS students in the summer… not sure about you guys in colorado though of course.

also, you could try the governor’s office, or a state legislature’s office in colorado.

and finally, the state department offers high school students a bunch of positions in the summer… in fact a bunch of gov agencies do… students.gov has a plethora of opportunities.
