USC 2009 transfer thread

archieg: USC will give you credit for completing the GE courses over summer. However, the grades for those will not affect their admission decision.

i had a question about this upcoming semester. I am completely done with my general ed (currently sitting at 66 units), only took 11 units last semester and so far am only planning to take 7 units this upcoming semester. the question here is: should i take more? i've heard two sides: (1.) don't end up with too many units but (2.) if you don't take enough they wont take you as seriously since your schedule has not been "rigorous" enough. thanks for any input

What year are you on? I can't recall the exact cutoff, but if you take more, they just won't transfer the excess amount.

2 1/12 years, after spring semester will be 3.

Are you applying from a cc or a 4-year?

You should note that it takes 128 for most degrees at USC.

A max of 64 will transfer (80 for architecture/engineering). But you should take more than 7 to show academic rigor. Though you are applying after a third year, you would only be considered a junior.

grey- i am applying from a cc.

trojan - the junior standing i am aware of. i kind of felt i should be taking more, but at what point do i cut it off? I'm worried that they will consider anything below 16 "not rigorous enough" so I'm wondering what taking say 12 or 10 units would do vs. the 7. maybe I am over thinking it, but it's a thought.

The higher, the better. You don't have to go the full 16 since you'll go over, but you really should try to keep it up with what you've been doing.

Hey, I have a question. Lets say your application for the film school is 2 days late but your regular USC application is on time. Will the film school look at your application if it's late?

For some reason, I thought it was due the same day as the regular one(Feb. 2nd)...turns out it's due one day earlier. Ugh...

it doesn't say on the website, usually they will say no late applications accepted. it's not due till tomorrow, is it possible for your to take it there personally? if not, give them a call.

it's nice to see some film applicants in here.

Kind of off topic: Trojan are you a film major as well? Based on other posts I'm assuming so...

Question about Transferable GPA:

Do college classes you took while in highschool (through dual enrollment) count towards your Transferable GPA/Transferable Unit Count?

Thanks!

Yeah, I'm hoping to transfer for Critical Studies. Originally I would've gone for production, but now I think CS would be better since I'm also going for English/Neuroscience.

And they (USC and SCA) said try to keep the deadline, but if you can't, it's fine as long as it comes ASAP, within the week.

Transfer GPA includes up to 16 elective units taken during high school (and another 16 for AP, or 32 if all of those were AP).

Does anyone here know whether or not they count the GPA of classes taken at a CC while enrolled at a University? My university counts the credits I received from the CC, but not the GPA... will USC do the same?

I don't think so. USC students that do that have to fill out pre-approval forms. And it seems like that doesn't work for most classes.

You will have to send in those transcripts though. And from my understanding, if you have an acceptable GPA, it doesn't matter anymore unless you qualify for honors when you graduate.

Thanks TrojanTransfer. It doesn't matter either way cause I have a 4.0 with and without it being calculated, but I'd like it to be added to my overall GPA just because it can only help.

im applying for junior standing.. ill have way above 30 credit cutoff for USC.. im just worried they will say something.. I'd rather take my language requirement at USC -- no use taking two semesters here and then another 2 semesters there.. i'd rather just take my 3 semesters of the language i want. your thoughts?

Even though as an oos Junior transfer who will have 65 credits completed by end of spring 09, do you think i'll get a spring grade request form if i am currently fulfilling 2 out of the 4 pre-reqs?

I think it would depend more on your GPA, but IIRC, most people do get a spring grade request.

Hey, I have a questionn!

I asked the representatives at USC about the 30 unit crap and they told me as long as I have 30 units by the END OF SPRING, they will not look at my HS grades. But I've heard elsewhere that I need 30 units by the time I APPLY. Right now, from Summer and Fall, I only have 21 and I'm currently taking 9, which puts me at 30. but I'm still a little concern? So if anyone can help assure me that they will say I have 30 units instead of 21 or w/eee that would be great!

Also, for the forms to download thing. There's a section that asks for my "related major classes" etc. Do I just put in my related Major classes ONLY? for example for marshall, the econ classes, calculus and writ 130? Or do I put in ALL my classes from the previous two semesters? This may seem like a dumb question, but I'm a bit confused. I already put the classes for my major in the section to demonstrate that I will fulfill the lower division writing requirement and the highest math courses, etc. And I'm not sure if I have to put it in again? AHH

Oh and ALSO, am I supposed to send in my AP scores NOW? and I know I have to send in my HS transcript now but what about my CC?

THANK you for answering all these questions. I am so confused I don't think you have any idea :[

I asked the same question because I was gathering transcripts and I got the same answer. Test scores only needed if you have less than 30 by the end of spring.

Only put major related courses. I don't think you need to put WRIT 130 since everyone does that, but you should put calc because they might overlook it (like me, I only have calc from high school).

And send in transcipts and APs now.
