USC 2009 transfer thread

When is the earliest time any applicant will receive a decision letter from Marshall?

Likely the latter half of May and into June.

if you have prereqs for marshall in progress does that delay the admission decision or do they ever just accept you before you even show them your final grades?

I don't think the course is transferable, but still it's from the major that I am concentrating...
I have a midterm for this class on tue ...so I am thinking if I should still put effort in it or not (in B/C range now) ...or just W
What do you think?

ssl1028-

My course is not transferable either, yet mine is not related to my major. But, yours is still for the major you are concentrating on. Definitely put the effort in to it. Do you think that you can get a B? If this midterm goes well, it may give you a chance. But, if you think that the time spent in this class will cause your other grades to slip (which it would for me), then perhaps it is better to drop.
What I am saying is that if you can take this class, get a B, and maintain your other grades, then do so. If you can only get a C, (while maintaining your other grades) then it is probably better to drop- but, any course with a C does not transfer to USC anyways. I'm guessing you are not sure whether or not you can get a B or a C- that is the difficult part; that is why attempting, trying hard to do well on this test you have coming up will better allow you to gauge what your decision should be. You can always file for a drop before the test, and then see the grade that you get; so if it is asked why you are dropping, you can say that it was not because of the grade received on your test, but for some other reason.

What I wonder though, is if we do get a W, what we will have to say to USC? If anything, but I am sure they may want to know.

CaptainRodeo, I was in the same boat as you just a week ago; I dropped a non-transferrable class that was affecting my other classes. I think I am just going to send some kind of note/e-mail explaining the situation to USC... but again, one W shouldn't hurt too much if at all.

I have the same withdrawal from a class problem too. I was very affected by a recent rejection from another school and I flunked my first midterm in a class. I would get a W too if I drop the class but I know it cannot be transferred anyway...
I have already sent an email to USC to ask about that and I hope I'll get a reply soon and I'll tell you guys!

sounds good bitterlemon!

pootie: usc doesn't like hippies :P

Shwayzeee- feels good to know I am not the only one in this boat- as well as bittermelon and the others. It is totally not worth it for me to take that class- I also think if we have a legitimate reason, that a W should not be a big deal- it helps even more if it is not for a prereq (sorry 1028...i dont know if yours is). i think i find out today or tomorrow whether or not the petition committee will remove my W. also, like i mentioned, perhaps there is a petition committee at your school, (or a really cool registrar worker) that will remove the W. its worth a shot- i am not going to mention it to USC until i hear from the committee.

Well i was in the same boat as everyone else with the dropping/W case. I need to take a language for USC and i was in my 2nd semester of french but i picked up a lot of 300+ level courses in my major which turned out to be harder than i thought (which wasn't the problem) The problem was that the french teacher was nuts, and gave more works than my 400 level genetics class. and i didn't want to get a B in french if that meant getting a B for my other classes so i dropped French (inevitably getting a W :( ) but on the bright side, i'm getting A's in my other classes :)

There you go. So, I'm guessing that USC has dealt with this before, and will probably be understanding. Since we are just a little microcosm of all who are applying there, and there are, I think, 5 of us who are in this situation on this thread, and USC, who deals with the whole transfer population has probably dealt with this on a much larger scale, with probably more people who have W's- it makes me conclude they are probably very understanding.

either that or the 5 of us are instant rejections :P
knocks on wood

I hope not, but I seriously doubt it if we have good GPA's

I talked to a couple USC counselors last year about W's. Basically, they don't like them. However, 1 really shouldn't be a problem at all, they probably wouldn't even look twice. 2 is the limit. They don't really like to see more than 2 (what they told me) or even worse, a trend in your transcript. For instance, I had 2 w's in my freshman year, haven't had one since, and have a strong gpa. They dold me even the two shouldn't be a problem since its not a trend for me to get W's. But definitely send a letter explaining the W if you happen to get an SGR.

thanks blsdmf, that really takes some stress off.

thanks everyone, esp captainrodeo for the comment.
My class isn't a pre-req ... I think I am going to take the exam and see how thing goes ...
I don't think the petition comm. at my school will waive my W (if I dropped it)...they seem to have straight rule about that.

well but if we didn't have a W in the semesters before, USC wouldn't notice our W until we send them the spring grade. Will it be a good idea if you guys send the explanation later (like mid-april/early may)? so by that time some of you might already get your acceptance. I don't know...just an idea..=p

don't worry about 2 W's guys..it seems like from last year's thread people with one or two W's and strong GPA's were accepted.

we shouldn't think about it too much because it's out of our hands already and we should just focus on our current classes.

Okay guys i just called EVERY school that I applied to (I called the specific department) and told them my situation. Basically every person told me that withdrawing from the class that is not a MAJOR requirement will NOT affect my application. Also I asked if I should provide some explanation for the withdrawal and they said no because they would probably not care about the W unless you want them to know that you broke your leg or something. lol I am definitely dropping my class now yay! I hope that helps!

bitterlomon -
just curious which dept are you applying to?
