USC 2011 Transfer Thread

ATTENTION EVERYONE

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT TRANSFER CREDIT

I emailed USC asking if AP credit counts towards the 30 minimum credits, to confirm what madbean and alamemom said. This was USC’s response:

“You should have at least 30 transferrable semester units (in college) by the end of the Spring term prior to Fall entry.”

The (in college) part was written in a font twice as large as the rest of the message, and it was bolded.

So madbean and alamemom are right.

AP CREDIT DOES NOT COUNT TOWARDS THE 30 MINIMUM CREDITS. IF YOU HAVE NOT TAKEN 30 CREDITS OF TRANSFERABLE COURSEWORK AT YOUR SCHOOL, MAKE SURE YOU TAKE SOME EXTRA CLASSES NEXT SEMESTER.

That is all. :D

Thank you Upsidedown! Well looks like i’ll have to make sure to get 30 by the end of spring…would this also include the SAT/ACT? like if we obtain 30 units by sring semester do we need to post our SAT/ACT scores?

Hello guys, its my first time here on college confidential. I am an international undergraduate student interested in transferring to USC in Fall 2011.

Shedding some light on my college record-

I was initially enrolled at DePauw university for Fall 2009, but I had the worst college start there. I was enrolled in 4 classes (14 credits) namely Psy 100, Calculus 2, College writing 2 and American Islam (first year seminar). I failed in 3 of them and got a D in my seminar. GPA was a shocking 0.33. I got academically suspended and I accept full responsibility for what happened.

I than moved to Linn Benton community college (LBCC) in Oregon for my Winter 2010 semester and took 15 credits( SOC 204,GEOG 202 Physical Science 104 and CH 221). I ended up with a 3.9

For Spring 2010 semester I took 24 credits (Psy 201, Physics 201, WR 121, Political Science 204, Hist 201, SPN 101 and Religion 102). I ended with a 4.0.

I did my summer 2010 semester at Oregon State University, took 16 credits ( Math 252, Communication 111, ST 201, ECON 202 and a physical education class). I ended up with a 3.81.

I am doing my Fall 2010 semester LBCC and am registered for ANTH 103, ART 204, ECON 201,ENG 104,SPN 102 and MUS 108. The semester is going pretty smooth and am expecting a good result.

SAT-1800

I am not sure how the fact that I go to an out-of-state community college will affect my transfer application. If it helps in any way or makes my app any stronger I can transfer and do my winter and spring 2011 semester at Oregon State University (OSU). The only reason why I was holding off my plan to transfer for Fall 2010 is because I thought changing schools so many times will act in my disadvantage in the application process.

My intended major is Economics and I want to apply to college of letters, arts and sciences. I am not sure what kind of a chance I stand in getting into USC. But the dramatic change in my academic record is evident. Besides I have re-taken all the classes I have failed in at Depauw and ended up with good grades.

It would be great if you guys could let me what kind of a chance I stand and also suggest some suitable schools for me. I am already considering a couple of them.

Thanks

I dont know why i’m freaking out but i just am because USC is just so good i want to get in to the music industry major. Does anyone have any experience with Thornton school of music?

My main question is: How do I complete the application because i am currently a freshman at the University of Utah and I have no grades. I cannot post them on the online application. Also, the deadline for ALL materials is Dec 1st, which is not even the end of the 1st semester so i dont know how i’m going to get the admissions my grades. I emailed them once and they said they recommend having completed 30 semester units BEFORE applying i dont know if that was a typo or something but if someone could help me out it would be well appreciated! Thanks!

Good luck to you other transfers out there as well!

Pinstripe - if you can get 30 units by spring, then you are all set to go. However, if you are at all worried about any of the credits not transferring, I would submit the SAT/ACT scores. :/

Rayeed - that’s an interesting situation… if you’re looking for other good schools with Econ programs, I would try University of Chicago and Northwestern too. I think you have a decent chance because of how much your grades have changed.

ImGonnaMakeItBig - congrats, you’re the first Thornton transfer here. You may want to go back and read the first few pages, as some of your questions are answered there. Are you sure the deadline for all materials is December 1st for transfers and not freshmen? I know some programs (a major in the SCA, for example) require you to send supplemental materials in by December 1st, but I think you’re fine as long as you send your grades/application to USC in by February 1st (provided you sent the other materials in on time). Double check that and email them. If you don’t have 30 semester units completed by the time you apply, then you will most likely get a Spring Grade Request. As long as you have 30 total by the end of the spring, you’re all set. Remember, that total does not include credit you may receive from AP classes.

quick questions guys. when i filled out part 1 I put poli sci as my first choice and broadcast journalism as my second. well i wanted to put international relations as my second choice. can i change it on part 2?

JustJose29 - yes, you can change it on Part II.

I am hosting a party for 2011 transfers if I GET IN !
Meanwhile, got to get an A on that George Orwell essay.

dreamupsided0wn- Yes it says december 1st on this page: [USC Thornton School of Music : Admission: Steps for Applying](http://www.usc.edu/schools/music/admission/stepsforapplying/index.html)

I dont know if REQUIRED materials means EVERYTHING but I emailed them and am expecting a reply. Thanks for your reply as well!

George Orwell is the man.

I swear I can write 1,000 pages on 1984. Love that book.

I know a couple of you already posted this but I finally received an email back from USC undergrad offices and they wrote “You need to have 30 units completed by the end of your spring semester in order to disregard the SAT/ACT requirement.” So solved my problem

my fall semester endS on december 20, and winter ends on feb 10.
i believe that i will be sending both grades as soon as my the session ends…it cant be december…
it doesn’t say anywhere on the annenberg site…

IS THERE ANYONE HERE THAT IS CURRENTLY ATTENDING COLLEGE OUTSIDE OF CALIFORNIA I FEEL LIKE I"M THE ONLY ONE haha sorry for the caps

Hi I’m a freshman at University of Texas at Austin, and I’m (sadly) already considering transferring to USC as soon as possible. I’ve read they don’t take freshman transfers, so when is the earliest I would be able to transfer, and when should I apply for that earliest time?

Also, since UT Austin is not on their list of colleges with transferable credit, what should I do to make sure I’m taking correct courses?

My high school academics are very strong and I was admitted into SCA as a prospective freshman… but long story short, things didn’t turn out very well :frowning: but I wanna go back!

Neji107- Awesome your considering transferring to USC! Anyways, You could transfer next year, which is the fall 2011 year. That is the one I am applying for. Applications for fall 2011 are already online so you can actually start now if you want.

Also, thats wierd UT austin is not a school with transferable credit…have you checked the articulation history with USC and UT Austin? There may be some credit transfer histories but maybe I am wrong.

Check USC’s undergraduate website and download their transfer brochure. It has a list of what their general education requirements are as well as what are the core requirements for transfer admission.

Oh just curious, how strong was your high school academics?

Good luck!

ImGonnaMakeItBig - I’m from Chicago, so you’re not alone.

Neji107 - USC lets you apply as early as you want for a transfer spot. If you have less than 30 credit hours by the end of the year (including your spring courses) then they will base their decision primarily on your high school grades and standardized test scores. If you have over 30, they will focus on your college record. Since you got in before, you don’t really have to worry about that. I’m also applying to SCA as a transfer, so yay. There were only two of us before. I think you have a decent chance of getting in now, so you should definitely apply for Fall 2011.

Many colleges don’t have articulation agreements with USC, but I’m sure most of your courses (as long as they weren’t film production classes) will transfer. General things like Calculus, English, Sociology, etc will most likely transfer. The USC site itself says that “most academic courses from four-year institutions will transfer.”

Here is the page you should look at to see if you meet the (very small) requirements:

Hi I’m a first year at Smith College and I really want to transfer to USC.
I’m originially from California and the east coast really doesn’t fit in with me.
I’m very new to the whole transfer thing so I had a few questions
If I have only 20 credits by the time the application is due, but more than 30 after the whole year, do I still have to report my SAT score?
I’ll send in my high school transcript but I wasn’t too sure if it was required to write the SAT score.
Also I took math all 4 years of high school up to calculus. Do I have to take a math class in college right now in order to transfer?
and one more question! will it help that I’m coming from Smith College rather than a community college?

sorry for all the questions! thank you!

xtinenoh - if you look at the first few pages of this thread, you’ll notice that some of your questions have already been answered. ;)

As long as you have a minimum of 30 credits by the end of the year, you are fine. However, if you think any of them might not transfer or if you are at all worried about not having the minimum 30 credits, then submit your test scores. You are still required to submit your high school transcript to show that you graduated.

If you look in the USC Transfer Brochure ([Transfer Students - USC Undergraduate Admission](http://www.usc.edu/admission/undergraduate/apply/transfer.html) - PDF on the side), you will see that USC only requires math up to Intermediate Algebra. You have credit all the way up to Calculus, so you’re clear. However, some majors require additional math courses so please verify that with the Transfer Brochure. The only other requirement you need to fulfill is an advanced composition course equivalent to USC’s WRIT 130.

No one can say for sure if the college you are transferring from weighs into the decision. I’m sure if you have good grades at Smith College, they’ll take that into consideration and will be able to tell that you can keep up with college-level coursework.
