That is unfortunate, @marg928 My older daughter is a B.A. in Dramatic Arts with Minors in Cinematic Arts and Communication at USC now… so SDA there would have been a great option. If it is not to be, you at least have two stellar options for her to consider…
We do see many more online Actors Access listings for student films being shot at LMU. So, if it is acting for tv and film that truly inspires her, you may want to consider leaning that way… or at least really looking into what sort of and the # of student prods put on each year at CalArts.
Hello, first of all, congratulations on your daughter’s acceptance to those other elite colleges. As a Houstonian, I can guarantee she will like it. You sound pretty experienced about the USC since your older daughter goes there, so as a recently admitted student I have quick question to ask to ask you. USC states that they meet the full percent demonstrated need of their students. Was that the case for your older daughter? With other words, did she have to take out a lot of private loans? @WWWard
@mfelek In our case, yes… they met what we hoped they would for her and have for the last two years as well - remaining very consistent. In fact, allowing her to choose to attend USC was on par ultimately with what it would have cost to allow her to attend two FL state schools (where we are in-state) or even to UTampa (private). By comparison, UMiami (private) expected her to pay 300% of the USC final # to attend there. We opted to just pay it… but fed work study and loans were offered too as a means to pay it.
So… you are saying that she might like Houston and Rice U.?
My son is a sophomore at USC having taken the TTP route. They expect you to complete freshman requirements at a college and to meet with the counselor to map out which courses at your college will transfer to USC. They prefer a junior college, but my son went to a 4 year. They don’t want to be perceived as poaching students from other 4 years. You need a 3.5 GPA each semester/quarter and you will have to provide your transcript and possibly progress reports. You will have to reapply with all of that process through Common App, but if you do what they recommend and get a 3.5 it is pretty certain.
@WWWard thanks for that info! We are visiting in April so she can decide between the two. LMU is a BA and CalArts an intense BFA so two very different options. If you have any other info or advice please PM me. And sorry about your D
@marg928 you’re welcome. And thanks. That was really the only insight that I could think of. CalArts has clearly trained some excellent actors and actresses… I just do not see their projects ever show up in any casting circles. Maybe their focus lies elsewhere. IDK… it just may be something to ask about.
edit… that could also be because LMU has a stronger focus in film/tv production itself on-campus. That of course is a huge advantage for SDA… with SCA active next door.
Some words of encouragement: I did not receive any mail today but I am in a 2-day zone in a suburban area of FL. However, I was accepted to another college (via portal) whose package was supposed to arrive today through priority mail, but it did not. Basically, for those of you still waiting for an acceptance package, please don’t lose all hope if nothing arrived today, because priority mail does not always arrive when predicted. In my experience, it has usually been one or two days delayed. Good luck to everyone else staying up this last 1.5 hours to see what the portal will say.
Thank you for your quick response! Rice is the #1 diverse college in the United States so she will definitely benefit from the diverse student body. It is very close to Medical Center and Downtown which means that she will get the opportunity to easily access to the internships in such a global city. They have a very good residential college system just like Hogwarts, and they will provide her a special pass which will let her take public transportation and admission to famous museums and the Houston zoo for free. The campus is amazing which has Byzantanian architecture motifs, very similar to USC. The only cone is that Houston weather is pretty humid and hot which shouldn’t be an issue for her since you are from Florida. @WWWard
@charcoalatey2021 thanks… that is exactly our position – FL suburb (of Tampa) in a 2-day (supposed) zone. I know though in reverse that when I send things priority mail, they miss the delivery time routinely. Just hoping that such was our case today. Good luck…
@mfelek you’re welcome. Thanks… she was actually hoping to escape the heat and humidity, but it is likely pretty much the same general weather at Emory (Atlanta). The only negative thing about Rice though is that Film there is only a concentration within the Visual and Dramatic Arts Major… so it seems to have a much lesser emphasis there… i.e. less training / facilities, etc. At Emory, it is at least a major itself. Of course, neither of these options would compare to SCA. UTexas could be the closest… but I suspect that they will be less generous with scholarships or aid. But Austin seems very cool.
@WWWard I was a little distraught earlier today when I chased down our mailman who initially only handed me three small envelopes. I had him check in the back of the jeep ‘just in case’, where he found my Son’s USC acceptance package and acceptance into the SCA. Whew! Apparently they store the priority mail packages separate from the regular size mail…so there’s a small possibility of packages not being delivered on time. Praying for you and your daughter as you check the portal tonight!
@charcoalatey2021 Omg me too! I’m in a 2-day zone, and I didn’t receive anything from any college in the mail today. However, I was accepted to CMU through portal, even though I didn’t receive the acceptance packet in the mail today. Don’t lose hope everyone! Now I’m not saying you should be expecting an acceptance regardless of where you are, but I wouldn’t assume a rejection until it’s confirmed. Good luck!
