USC Dramatic Arts - Invitation to Open House April 5, 2014

Was she invited to the scholarship interview?

financial aid portal states pending.

This is a ridiculous way to find out you are accepted! Just as bad as the UNCSA portal and all it’s weird changes. Why doesn’t the postcard say “congrats you are admitted please come to open house?” Who would go to the open house if they were rejected?? Course it’s not as bad as the big envelopes that say congrats and admit you to the school but include a rejection letter to your program inside the packet.
Why can’t everyone do it like BU? They told us Mar 22 and on mar 22 we clicked on our portal and there was a decision. They had 54000 applicants they said and somehow they managed. Clearly it can be handled better than this fuzzy postcard invite debacle where no one knows for sure what they are invited to.

Ours says in review

So, I’m not defending the admissions process, but there is little intention on behalf of the schools of a portal change being the way you “find out.” Last year, the NYU CC site was all in agony over portal changes and what they meant – it does make it worse to be reading into things that may or may not be true.

In response, the admissions dean wrote this:

<a href=“MEET NYU - Home”>MEET NYU - Home;

USC sends those postcards out because the open house is a mere 6 days after they are announcing their admissions. It’s likely the drama department knows who is accepted and waiting list already and wants to give their far-away applicants who must fly-in a heads up.

Here are some words of wisdom over on the USC CC site from someone who is a first-year there this year:

“Just hold tight. USC is NOT announcing anything online until March 29th. They know people peek at their USC connect to read the tea leaves and honestly - until the official date the notations don’t mean anything and are known to change between now and then. Doing this will make you crazy (I know - we were in this boat last year).”

We would be one of those far away applicants and we didn’t get an invite…and there is no wait list…

Wait, so my son’s financial aid page says major: theatre
does this mean he got into the BA and not the BFA?

@ UVaHOO87, did you have a major marked in financial aid? Get in?

My daughter applied BA Theatre, and her FinAid portal lists such for her Major, with award pending. And she received the invitation in FL on Saturday. Looking at the thread on this exact same topic from 2013, this all does seem to be a positive sign, indicating a pending admission. But we will of course feel much better seeing such clearly stated in writing at 3pm Eastern on Saturday.

Those that have received invite to the open house…are you going to attend? Are you waiting until the 29th to make flight reservations if you are going?

Personally, we would love to attend, but travel from FL to LAX is of course fairly expensive… and we will thus not fully commit until we are sure that USC has fully committed as well. While anecdotal evidence from past years seems to indicate positive news, the invitation itself does state that acceptance has not been offered to date, so we clearly will choose to be prudent.

My son received the invitation last Friday (we live in Phoenix), but he only has “Application in Review” in his financial aid portal. I can’t imagine that there’s a problem, but until we see something positive about actual admission, I will remain anxious. Especially since my husband and S are scheduled to fly to NYC this Friday for the Pace Performing Arts Admitted Student event. I really want to cancel the NYC trip, since USC is S’s absolute #1 choice, but it’s a little scary to do that without knowing about USC for sure.

I guess the real question may be… has anyone received an invitation in years prior and then not also gained admission? So far, I have not been able to locate anyone who has. Does his FinAid portal also show his major in upper right portion? If so… many posts have also listed that as a probable good sign… especially when coupled with receiving the invitation. Good Luck. The weather this week in NE looks bad… hopefully it will improve by the weekend :)

Yes, that IS the question.

Agreed.

D’s financial aid portal changed to “Application in Review” also. The info in the upper right portion was apparently removed this morning. I am really torn about making the financial commitment to buy plane ticket, book hotel room etc for that weekend. To end on good note, D got email confirm this AM that she got into UC Irvine BA Drama program!

There was a post in the 2013 “USC School of Dramatic Arts Invitation” thread from a parent whose student received the invitation and then was admitted for spring, not fall. Other than that, everyone who posted about receiving the invitation was admitted for fall. That’s a good sign, but still, CC posters only represent a small percentage of applicants. I think I’m going to cancel the NYC trip. If things don’t work out with USC, my son and husband can go check out Pace later in April. But I will feel reeeeellly bad that I contributed to S getting his (and my) hopes up for USC.

Congrats, rdhmom

I just do not see how USC SDA would be intentionally so cruel. Info about the Open House is available online. But to directly send such an RSVP Invitation to applicants who they also know are about to be rejected seems to make little sense. We thus have to conclude that the Invitation is very similar to their Likely Letter…

But I guess we can also all know for sure by Saturday. And next year, applicants will have even more anecdotal evidence to refer to.

Ugggh Same!

@rdhmom did your d’s portal say “theatre” or “acting” before they took it down?
