So I got into USC and I’m thrilled !!! but I’m so disappointed I got in as a spring admit! I really value experiences and don’t want to miss out on first semester, making friends, and good housing!
Is there any way I can contact USC to try to get bumped to fall, if that’s even possible? How do I approach this, do I write a letter or idk I’m so confused on the whole situation.
Also other options are studying abroad or taking CC classes. I’m really looking into going abroad but am also really confused on how that works (what classes do I take, are other USC students going to be with me ?? aahhh).
Also if I go in January will I be housed with other Freshmen?? How do I integrate into classes??
This is really stressing me out, any advice would help thanks!
The best way to assimilate to being a USC student, for Spring admits, is to live the fall in Gateway and take classes at Santa Monica College. Make sure you take four classes that will fulfill requirements at USC, like Writing, Math and a couple GE classes. Do not take foreign languages, since they are much harder at USC and you will struggle mightily.
Also, don’t brag about being a spring admit. I know USC does a great job of making you all feel great about being admitted, but spring admits are essentially kids whose test scores, class rankings, and HS GPAs are not desired in official statistics.
Son was admitted for Spring Thornton Music Industry. USC was his top choice going into the final stretch, but he’s got a couple other very good options, so it will be a tough decision! He’s definitely considering entering USC in the spring, especially after looking at the study abroad options for the fall.
He has questions and uncertainties, though, as others do: how does he make friends and integrate into the freshman class? Are there sequences in his major that would be difficult to start in the spring? How many people get bumped into fall admission, especially with the uncertainty of the yield combined with this year’s smaller number of fall admits?
Let’s see, when they aren’t admitting 4,000 students with straight A’s and scores in the 99th percentile, and have a 13% acceptance rate, generalizing that spring admits have lower anything is very inaccurate. That is a 10 year old idea that revolved around universities playing a game to make their stats better. But in today’s USC there is no lack of kids with high stats to bring on board. That rumor, just like the one that says TTP are only legacies, or all attendees are rich and spoiled, are so outdated and are just kept alive by the uniformed (or insecure). Best to let that go because it is not accurate in any regard and is insulting at the same time. Hard to believe a true Trojan would ever post something like that.
OMG that comment by @ttrojan is so rude. My daughter will forever be proud of being accepted to SCA and doesn’t care that it’s spring admit. They turned away PLENTY of people and accepted her!
It’s like when I hear that ancient reference - University of spoiled children - I just assume they are clueless and have had their head in the sand for years. And if it’s a kid saying it, I know they are getting it from their parents who have had their head in the sand for years. I am actually embarrassed for them.
Or they can just go on thinking we are all super rich, that’s fine.
Not true, based on the four at son’s school who were admitted, two for fall, and two for spring. All were qualified, but both spring admits had higher test scores, higher class rank and stronger academic records, so there are obviously other considerations.
This is the rudest comment I have ever seen. My son is proudly a spring admit and considering two national merit scholars from his high school and several people with over 4.5 GPAs got denied, it is hard to think of it as a bad thing. He was quite honored to be in the 8,000 that received a package rather than the over 55,000 that did not. Obviously, they say something in him they wanted.
Here is the link - what I quoted is actually higher than what the cost for one semester is…I think my D looked at the annual tuition (2 semesters). In any event, it is not cheap…American U in paris is about $19k, Switzerland is more and I think Rome was a little less, can’t remember. https://admission.usc.edu/firstyear/admittedspring/springadmits.html

Hi! I’m a spring admit, english major in Dornsife. Shocked to be accepted and still do not believe it. USC is my #1 and my dream school so I feel unbelievably lucky to be admitted.
Several of my close friends are freshmen at USC right now and I think I am going to move into their apartment when I come in the spring. Kind of bummed I won’t get the traditional freshman dorm experience, but I am so excited to live with my friends. Only thing I am nervous about is having trouble making friends that are also freshman as all of my friends tend to be older than me and I already have a group of friends attending SC right now. Worried I am going to fall into a comfortable pattern and miss out on the freshman experience, but that’s definitely a problem I’m happy to have.
I’m going to my local CC first semester to take as many classes as possible and work a lot to save money.
I think Spring admits sometimes are placed with other Spring admits. It was the case for me. Three of my other roommates were all spring admits. So like whatever. But things could change I guess.
My son was accepted as a spring admit in the school of engineering / comp sci major. Really excited for him as compsci is a hard major to get into at any ranked eng school. Now we need to determine if it’s worth it to go USC rather than Illinois engineering, which is ranked higher and cheaper…but would love for him to go SC. Tough call.
@stockphotohumor Ooooh, I tried to do that and my admissions counselor was not having it, lol. He said something like “There’s no chance you will be bumped to fall, so enough of that conversation. Let’s discuss what you can do during your fall semester at CC, etc.”. It was a little different for me since I was transfer student with an advanced unit count (100 units), so being a spring admit actually did put me a semester “behind”. I went pretty far in my mission to get bumped. I emailed just about anybody and everybody, but they kept saying the same thing or ignored me. I finally just sent a letter to the usc prez’s house as a crazy desperate move. I actually got a response! But it had been forwarded to the dean of Dornsife and my reply was from him. He said that I should talk with my admissions counselor about it =|
TLDR; I wouldn’t try to ask. They automatically consider all spring admits for the fall semester and freshmen have a higher chance than transfer spring admits of being bumped up. So if it’s meant to happen, it will There’s just nothing you can do to improve your odds. I honestly don’t know why I made such a fuss over it though. A lot of people in the classes I took my first semester happened to be spring admits themselves, so I had no real problems with adjusting or feeling that I stood out.
