UT 2015 Thread

Accepted to McCombs today! I found out I was accepted to UT in late December but I’ve been waiting forever to hear about McCombs. I’m so excited! I can’t wait to come!
Here are my stats:

OOS (Florida)
4.75 W (out of 5) and 4.00 UW (out of 4)
IB Diploma so I’ve taken virtually only IB/AP classes
ranked 14/550 so top 3%
ACT-29
SAT II’s: Math(2)-750 Chem-690
Pretty good amount of community service/extracurricular activities plus I’ve had a job since junior year
I think my essays were good but I think what really got me in was the rigor of my schedule and gpa/class rank

Definitely going to attend and cannot wait to be on campus again! Congratulations to future UT students! Go Horns!

Accepted into Cockrell School of Engineering (Biomedical)!

Applied- 11/28/10, but I walked my transcript in the day before the deadline :P

1st Choice- Biomedical Engineering, 2nd- Electrical/Computer Engineering

Rank- 22/637 (top 3.5 %); in state, public high school

GPA- 3.96 (UW) 5.28 (W)

ACT- 32 Composite: 34 English, 33 Math, 32 Reading, 30 Science

SAT- took it but didn’t send it in :P

Essays- kinda meh… they were okay :P

APs- AP World History (10th), AP English III (4, 11th), AP Calculus BC (11th), AP Government (12th), AP Macroeconomics (12th), AP Biology (12th), AP Chemistry (12th)

ECs- NHS, NSHS, Mu Alpha Theta, Marching Band (marching band at our school is really big, we made it to the state competition this year, takes up a lot of time), programming engineering internship over summer (held leadership position), quite a bit of community service,

also took Technical Drafting over the summer at a community college

Also Applied to Rice University and MIT (yeah I know, kind of a pipe dream :P)

Glad to finally have my real acceptance, not just my auto-admit letter :)

Status: Accepted
State of Residence: New York
Stats: SAT 2180 (730 V 740 W 710 M)
3.0 GPA
2 APs (Spanish Language, English Literature)
National Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalist
Open Mic Coordinator, Special Events Director, Hebrew School Assistant Teacher, Poetry Library Intern
High school doesn’t rank; highly competitive “elite” public school
Painstaking essays, outstanding teacher recommendations
Likelihood of Attending: It was my backup school (Tulane was my first choice) but I’m having trouble financing a Tulane education, and now I’m looking at them pretty levelly. Even if I get enough money for Tulane, I’m seriously considering UT Austin now.

Accepted Mechanical Engineering (but rejected from EHP)

GPA: 4.0 UW, 4.72 W (on a 5+ scale)
SAT: 2320 (800 M, 790 CR, 730 W) 800 Math II 780 Physics
Rank: Top 4%
AP’s: Stats (5), English Lang (5), US History (4), Physics C (pending), Calculus BC (pending)
EC’s: Varsity cross, track, choir, NHS, Native American Club (for the win)
Essays: Not going to lie, I half-assed them pretty bad.

And some other stuff that probably didn’t matter much.

So you didn’t get in EHP with 1590/1600 CR+M and 4 UW GPA? Makes you wander what it takes to get in.

^It must have been the essays that were the downfall.

It was only my engineering essay that wasn’t very powerful. The other two were ones I used for Princeton, so I put plenty of effort into those.

I attribute my rejection to that, as well as my lack of any engineering-related ECs. Apparently EHP isn’t worth much, so I suppose I’m not too distressed.

jc, what’s EHP? Petroleum engineering? Tried looking up UT’s engineering majors and didn’t find anything but petroleum with a ‘P’ in it.

But a 1590/1600 and 4.0 resulting in a 2nd choice is pretty harsh. Are you OOS PioneerJones?

EHP is the Engineering Honors Program. Mech E was my first choice and I got in, but the honors program turned me down. And no, I’m a Texas resident.

Wow, I shoulda figured that one out lol. EHP = engineering honors program…couldn’t get more obvious.

Well, that’s pretty shocking. If you’re a TX resident with those stats and didn’t get in, then that’s still harsh, below avg. essays or not. Regardless, UT engineering is solid and you’re in.

Question for you though, as an engineering major why did you apply to Princeton (and other Ivys, I assume)? Aren’t state schools much better for engineering in general (other than Stanford)? Just a little curious. Obviously your stats are worthy of Ivys though.

I too thought I had a great shot at EHP. I was overconfident, which caused me to slack on my engineering essay. Though after reading it again, it wasn’t necessarily poorly written; it just lacked the vitality and effort I put into my Princeton and Cornell engineering essays.

The only Ivies I applied to were Princeton and Cornell, both of which have engineering programs comparable to UT’s in prestige. I am fond of the liberal arts, though, and I like Princeton’s interdisciplinary approach to undergraduate education. There I could have the benefit of a well-rounded education, only with a specialization in engineering. Sane goes for Cornell.

To have a solid undergrad engineering education, it’s really hard to be “well-rounded” unless you’re willing to go to school an extra year. There are just too many technical courses you need to take to leave you much room for “extras.” I have read that starting in 2020, you will even need extra education beyond a BS in engineering to get an engineering license.

Accepted to McCombs today!!

from Colorado,

SAT: 2150
ACT: 32
GPA: 4.1 weighted
Math 2: 750
Chemistry: 690
lots of rigor (9 APs and many honors courses), and leadership as well as a varsity sport.

question though…so i know that it is posted online, but do they send an official packet in the mail?

I was accepted CNS Pre Pharmacy about a month ago (2nd Choice), first choice was McCombs.

Basic Stats
School: Instate Public(Decent)
SAT:2180 (1520 M + CR)
Rank: 32/600…now 28/609
GPA: 5.17/6.0 Weighted…school just now released unweighted GPA 3.84/4.0
Very Challenging Cirriculum- 12 AP Classes Total the rest were honors
Eagle Scout
Varsity Athlete
100+ service hours
Quality Essays

I’m a bit p***** off cause people from my school with less (sometimes much less) impressive stats got in. Is my anger justified?
I’m thinking about appealing the decision

Got into Cockrell today- Mech. E.!!!
ACT- 35 Superscored, 34 Composite
SATs - Math II (790) Physics (750, not sent) US History (770)
W-4.32 UW-3.85 Barely outside of top 10% W,
APs’ Calculus AB (11th,5); European History (10th,5); English Language (11th, 5) U.S. History (11th, 5) Calculus BC (12th), Physics B (12th), English Lit (12th), US Gov (12th) Stats, (12th)
Essays-UT was left off of my list so I only applied about three days before the deadline, did the best I could on my essays though not great.

Still waiting to hear back from a bunch of private Schools (April 1st is gonna be the biggest day of my life!!) Still pretty psyched that I got in

BTW, I don’t think that I applied to EHP, Oh well

@skiincolo:

Just a thin letter. I guess with so much online, there is no need for the “big envelope”.

@zlc

finally got 2 yesterday (one generic, one from McCombs)! thank you though!

Congratulations!

Sokratis:

You have amazing stats, but McCombs does a holistic review for the OOS pool, and you were probably up against tough competition–anf McCombs has an eye for a lot of leadership, which from your list (although Eagle Scout is impressive) may have weakened your overall application.

Accepted to EE in Cockrell but may change to Comp Sci in Natural Sciences.
3.5 GPA unweighted, 2010 SAT, AP Scholar with Honor. 1st choice, already paid enrollment and stuff.
