UT austin 2017/2018 Transfer Thread

@rtfhopeful Do you know how many spots are open for COLA? And more specifically Government and History (My first and second choice).

@awesomesauceness oh cool! Are they on the app/google play store ?

I just applied and listed American Studies as my first choice and History as my second. Does anyone know if American Studies is a competitive major to get into???

@utcshopeful one is a python PC app for windows, and the other one is a basic java android app that shows recent earthquakes around the globe. I havenā€™t gotten around to publishing it because there are thousands already on the play store but maybe I should get around to doing

how much do essays factor in when you do external transfer?

Chances? Currently 2nd semester freshman
1st Choice Comp Sci, 2nd Choice Math
GPA: 3.9
Credits: 49 after completing Spring semester. Currently in 2 upper level cs courses and have calc 1 and calc 2.
Resume: Lots of awards and ECs in HS, CS startup work, other work experience, CS research at current uni lab, 3 college CS ecs, some volunteering work
Essays: decent essays

@ZiuallahK how many credits do u have before finishing the spring semester ? and is calc 2 completed or in progress ?

also what university

@utcshopeful i have 32 right now. calc 2 completed, currently taking calc 3 and two upper level cs courses.

Hey guys Iā€™ve been following this thread for quite some time but never posted. Itā€™s nice to see so many people as anxious as me about attending UT Austinā€™s CS program. Chance me plz

Current hours when applied : 50 hrs (64 after this semester)
Current GPA : 3.91
Extra : will have associates in mathematics from ACC this summer
Extra : will be completely core completed in reference to UT Austin too ACCs transfer guide
Extra : completed COSC 1336, 1337
Extra : completed up to Calc III and Differential Equations with all As
Extra : 4 letters of recommendation. One from Diff eq teacher who is the professor of the mathematics dept at ACC. One from my Calc II professor and one from an English professor Iā€™ve kept in touch with over the years. One from my district manager at work
Essays : very personal statement of purpose talking about how much mathematics and programming mean to me. Very passionate issue of importance talking about meaningful work, and working in a field that is beneficial to human kind.

Only thing I lack is EC activities or club/school involvement because I work full time as a manager at a retail store. This is shown in my resume

I already got accepted to UT Dallas with two scholarships, but Iā€™ve been set on UT since the beginning.

Also the reason my GPA isnā€™t a 4.0 is because I got an F in 2011 in history because I dropped out of school. I retook it and made an A, but I address this in my essay. Do you think that screw up from so long ago will hold a lot of weight. It was a really sad point in my life.

@ZiuallahK what about science courses ??? because again UT really likes the math AND science courses to be completed ? if you have at least 2-3 courses completed then I would put you in a really high chance.

@jumpo69 @ZiuallahK added you guys to the list!

Even though I am a CS major, I already have Engineering Physics 1 & 2 completed

@utcshopeful in phyiscs 1 right now but i already have 3 math courses completed.

Iā€™m contacting the mods to get this thread pinned to the top of the UT Austin page instead of last yearā€™s transfer thread. Hopefully we will get more contributors that way as we are less than a week away from the deadline.

Here is the current list. As usual, let me know if you want any changes

Hey guys I have a quick question. I will be going into college with 12 hours of AP credit and will be taking 6 hours of transferrable courses this summer. If I take 12 hours the first semester of college (30 would be my total) would it be possible to transfer for Spring of 2019? Or is that to early out of high school to transfer? I was not top 7% of my high school and therefore made it hard for me to gain admission as a senior in high school. Also what is the average GPA for psychology at UT? thank you guys.

@ddance11 You would have to make sure that all 12 hours of AP credit are shown on your transcript as well as the summer courses, so that a total of 30 hours are shown. I think you will be allowed to transfer in then.

I believe psychology is slightly competitive but not the most. I would say based on past threads, a good GPA to have would be above a 3.7. Good Luck!

Awesome thank you for the information. Do you know what the admissions committee primarily looks at? Like is it GPA? I know itā€™s still considered holistic and thatā€™s what makes their decisions so confusing but is it not as holistic as freshman review?

@ddance11 GPA is a big focus of the admissions decision. I donā€™t know how much, but if I were to guess Iā€™d say about more than half. If you think your GPA is lacking, make sure your essays and resumes really stand out.
