UTD Accounting/ pharmacy

Hey guys,

I am currently considering two career options, and I cannot make my mind. On one hand I would like to pursue accounting and on the other pharmacy. I got a full ride at utd and I will not have to pay for anything besides maybe books.

Basically, my problem is if I do go into accounting, does utd even have good connections and networking? Smu has connections to ernst and young, jp morgan, coca cola, and a lot of good companies centered in dallas. I know someone personally who majored in accounting and history at smu and not works at ernst and young. Does utd have any of these connections? Its centered in dallas well...

I really rather attend smu but its very costly and I would be taking a 10k loan yearly upon which interest will be added as soon as i get the money in school. Additionally, because tuition increases by 6-8 percent a year, I could potentially have to take a 12 or 14 loan for one year. I cannot decide if working at a big four accounting firm will be worth the loan.

Do you guys think its better to attend utd and be debt free or attend smu with a huge debt when i graduate?

If I do pharmacy, I think utd would be a better option because both school have similar pre- health advising. Smu, however, has better programs such as engaged learning and they have a better career center to help you get that good job and internship.

Help me out! May 1st is the dreaded deadline when i must choose..

Sounds like you are very prepared and mindful of your future. That’s very good. I’m guessing because you got a full ride scholarship, you’d be able to handle the hard classes that you must take to fulfill pharm school prereqs. Take it from someone in the third year of a science degree: these classes are HARD. Be prepared to make friends with people who have already taken the classes to gain access to past notes or possibly practice exams. I believe pharmacy is a very smart path because not only is there a Pre-Pharm club where you can become an officer and make a good impression on representatives of pharm schools, but also there are very helpful professors that will be happy to help you on your path. I must admit I know next to nothing about accounting at UTD, but I suspect that you’d gain a bigger salary as a pharmacist right off the bat. I think you’d have to work and fight your way through several promotions as an accountant to make the same as a starting pharmacist.

My best advice…don’t go in that much debt for undergraduate school…but of course, the most important thing is what you see yourself as in the future. I’d say pharmacy is a safer route, but ONLY if you work hard in keeping a high GPA and get started on your pharm tech work by the time you hit junior year.
