UTD Freshman Apartments

I just received my housing package today and was told that I got put into the freshman apartment, which is a great disappointment since I have been hoping for the residence hall. Can somebody please tell me how bad or good are these freshman apartments. Are they just as infamous as the other UTD apartments as rumored? Dirty, broken, etc.? How "unfurnished" are the freshman apartment? How much furnishing would it need for the common area? I don't have money at all to buy new furniture or to rent them. Can somebody who's been there done that enlighten me? How far are these apartments from the center of campus? Thanks for your help!

Out of curiosity, when did you apply for housing? I’m still waiting for my package. I applied mid-May, and hoping to get into the residence hall.

Uhm, I applied about mid-May too, may be a little bit later than that. Let me know if you did get into the residence hall.

apartments>res hall. hands down in my opinion (the res hall was actually build after my freshmen year, so dont have personal experience with it). not as good to meet new people, but better living wise. freshmen apts are very clean since they’re the newest ones. the apts are completely unfurnished. you have to bring your own furniture or have your roommates bring them. they are right next door to the res hall, so they’re actually close to the center of campus.

Thanks for chiming in, big. Are the apartments the same ones the sophomores are living in, or are they a separate set of buildings solely for freshmen?

they should have their own apt buildings, unless something changes this year.

If you get put in a apartment do they assign you a room mate or do you have to find one?

you are assigned 3 other roommates

How Many bedrooms do they have?

Are these freshman apartments safe? I’m sorry for being paranoid, but I have heard stories of horror about the danger of living in the UTD upperclassmen apartments.

Pinkperson: They have four bedrooms and two baths per section.

Ok, I still haven’t heard back from anyone about if I got in or not. Are you a fan of the facebook page, because they said if you applied before may 25th you should be ok. Just an FYI for everyone

yea its 4 bedrooms. 2 people share a bathroom. its a nice setup.

the freshman apartments are safe. i have never felt unsafe at utd walking in the night time. you wont be living with utd upperclassmen, so no need to worry about that

You can room with up to three other people of your choosing. All of you have to put each other’s names down. Otherwise yeah, you get assigned.

Freshman apartments are definitely safe. I went to the gym every night from midnight to one and never thought twice about getting mugged or anything.

You have to furnish them, yes, but what our unit did was search around on Craigslist for free furniture. The furthest building from the freshmen units is the SOM, and that took a 10-15 minute walk for me. If you’re an engineer you’ll probably spend most of your time in ECS/ECN or the SLC, and those are just 5 minute walks.

I’m in the same boat. I was pretty disappointed that I didn’t get into the residence hall. I was looking forward to it, plus I too have very little money to spend on furniture so I’m probably going to end up sleeping in a bag until I can afford a bed. I also didn’t get into the LLC I was hoping for since my major will be Computer Science, but instead I got assigned to the Music LLC, so we’ll see how that goes.

Are there elevators in the freshmen dorms?

yea there are elevators.

laughingman, you’re eventually going to need a bed. why not just buy one for freshman year too

I’ll buy a bed when I can afford it, haha.

Consider yourself one of the lucky ones. My son applied for housing at the sametime and received notificationt that there WAS NO housing on campus available. He was provided with a listing of OFF Campus apartments on the busline and informed that the portion of his scholarship designated for Housing could not be used for any of this so called OFF CAMPUS housing. PRETTY Disappointing if you ask me.

My son is in the same situation . Let me get this straight, UTD does not have enough housing therefore the money we promised you is not available. I do not call that disappointing I call that BS.

My d received her housing packet along with a big yellow flyer stating that she needed to return the contract and deposit by July 18 otherwise her housing would not be guaranteed. I would think after this date they would let those who are on the waiting list know if any spots have opened up.
