Hey guys, I was wondering which school has a better cyber security program, also, what path should I take to cyber security should I take more IT classes or stick with my CS classes? Thanks!
I don’t know about cyber security, but UT-Austin has one of the best CS programs in the country.
Yeah, I know that haha but I don’t think I’d even get accepted to UT-Austin. I’ve been researching for hours!!! and I see some websites say that UTSA is actually ranked #1 in the country for cyber security, but overall people say the school is crap and is not nationally recognized. I’m not from Texas, nor do I really have an interest in staying here, so I don’t want to go to a school that’s only going to get me a job in the area.
It seems UTSA does have a strong program, but rankings mean virtually nothing in a new area like that. Part of the reason for the emphasis on cyber in that area is some DoD work related to that in San Antonio. Can you afford both of those schools being OOS?
hm, well, Cybersecurity = UMaryland college park.
If you’re not from Texas, odds are low you’d get in since there’s a cap on OOS admission and costs are quite high.
What are your stats?
I live in Texas for about 3 years now so I think I’m considered a resident now so yes I can.
Im in state, I live here just not from here sorry if I didn’t clarify that, which is another reason I’m trying to stick with the two for cheap tuition. Um, well I dropped out of HS so no SAT/ACT. I’m doing pretty good in CC, 3.5 gpa hopefully going to climb higher
Oh OK. Thought you were a junior in high school
Have you taken all the prereqs for the major? What math are you taking?
Did you already get into both? If not, apply to both and see
Given the competitiveness of transferring to UT CS, unless you have extensive outside experience or some really intriguing story related to the high school drop out, a 3.5ish is probably not going to cut it for Austin. You should apply but have a back up.
It is such a new field, that rankings are hard to trust. Rankings are hard to trust anyway. UT Dallas has a better reputation nationally than UTSA for CS but not sure how that translates to job placement in cyber security. If you plan to leave Texas to work then national reputation may matter more or internship experience. There are a lot of large companies headquartered in Dallas so internships may be easier there as well.
Haha nope I wish maybe I could’ve had a fresh start then. Umm, I was and then I called UT to see what courses I should take before wasting time/money and they told me just focus on general education. College Algebra at the moment =/ but I do plan on taking statistics and all the pre calc and calcs offered.
If you mean intriguing story as in being an inner city youth dropping out to live on the edge than I guess. Yeah, I’m looking for national reputation I don’t want to be stuck in Texas after school. I mean what should I do to better my chances at UT Austin?
