Days on the Lawn are open houses for admitted students. There are dorm tours, sessions for different programs, class visits, lunch in the dining hall…you can basically pretend to be student for the day. There’s more info on my blog.
My son received the Echols letter today. We are in the Northeast.

Here’s a direct link to a couple of the most important benefits of the Echols program. More is at the link.
DS hoped for an Echols nomination. Anyone else just getting news or do we assume the window has closed?
@dowzerw Echols letters were mailed out a couple of weeks back and everyone should have got it by now. Also, note that there were 200 invitees for Echols. The only hope is that your DS is the lucky one whose letter got delayed in the mail. Good Luck
There wind up being about 200 Echols Scholars in the class. We invite a little more because some wind up turning us down and going elsewhere.
The window isn’t closed. If a student is not invited to join a program at this point, they can apply to join after the first semester. The exception is Arts Scholars, who are only invited to join after they are here.
We live in the UK. My daughter was thrilled to see her acceptance online but has not received the acceptance letter (plus she is wondering a bit about the Echols). I wondered if any admitted students overseas have received their packets?
Is there any chance someone could “chance me” for the Echols program?
I am very highly interested in being able to deeply pursue my major as an undergrad… The extensive gen ed requirements are the only thing that deter me from being fully interested in UVA.
No one here can “chance” people for Echols. I can’t even do it without a full application.
Do you have AP/IB/DE work that will give you credit? Many students enter UVA with some of their [area requirements](http://college.as.virginia.edu/area) take care of because they’ve scored well on AP/IB exams or have DE credit.
FWIW, UVA’s area requirements aren’t as heavy as the core at my undergrad alma mater.
Alright, that’s fair. Yes, I’m taking APs across several disciplines (German Language and Culture, Biology, and Psychology), so I’ll keep my fingers crossed.
Thanks for the info… Is there a way to petition if they do not select you initially, if you’re really driven/passionate about it? I’m probably getting way ahead of myself though, because I’m a regular decision applicant. I have months to wait-- and hopefully not drive myself crazy doing so!
In response to earlier comments about the percent of accepted OOS students who decide to attend UVa, keep in mind that many of the OOS students who are accepted to UVa receive very large merit aid offers from other universities. It would be nice if UVa had some merit aid to offer, but UVa’s noble policy is that they will not reduce the need-based aid in order to shift money to merit-based aid. Many competing universities offer much less need-based aid than UVa.
My personal wish is that the people funding the Jefferson Scholarships would shift the funding to provide twice as many scholarships of 50% instead a few scholarships at 100%. In some cases, they may be paying 100% of the costs of a student whose family could fully afford UVa. In that case, the scholarship may just end up helping the student to afford a new Audi.
If I was deferred EA, am I automatically considered into the RD pool if my midyear report is sent?
My mid-year may not be sent from my school in time for the deadline of the 15th. Is there a grace period for mid year reports?
Funding and awarding of merit scholarships like Jefferson Scholars (not funded by UVa) are going to be decided by those ponying up the money. The only Jefferson Scholar that I know of ( parent is an acquaintance) went to private school all through school. Her parents are quite wealthy and connected. It is probably true that lots of kids/families getting merit at many schools, public and private, could be paying themselves instead. At least UVa puts most of their own money on the need based side…
This is my first and only post on CC. I have been reading these forums for awhile. I have found it helpful to see the “chance me” posts. Now that we have heard back from UVA EA and UNC EA - i realize, more than ever, that you can’t tell what a college admissions committee will like/not like. Every school is different. My son applied to both UVA and UNC EA. We live in Northern Virginia. He was deferred by UVA as an in-state student, and accepted OOS at UNC. He had SATs in the range for both schools. Our school does not rank or provide GPAs either, but he is a good student. So, you just never know.
This is late but wanted to post if helps anyone. DD was accepted OOS, from Texas.

Shocked at how many fantastic kids were deferred or denied. We hear the same thing for the TX flagships. Good luck to all.
Dean J,
For those who have been deferred, what are your thoughts about sending our regional counselors letters of our continued interest?
Thanks!
My daughter did, and received no response.
Please don’t email individual admission officers. We are a small staff and we have so much to read!
MY Reports come in electronically, by snail mail, or via uvaapplicationinfo@virginia.edu. If anyone accidentally sends them to one of us, we just forward it to that email address.
I am a RD applicant per the common application selection, when I checked to confirm my to do list didn’t list anything today I noticed my application status which previously stated complete now states view decision. After clicking on view decision it stated a generic message about early action deferred students should check back in April. Has anyone else applied regular decision and received this?
