Hi, I'm an entering first year student to UVA class of 2018.
I know at UVA you must take following area requirements.

Social Sciences - 6 credits from two different departments
Humanities - 6 credits from two different categories
Historical Studies - one 3 or more credit course
Non-western Perspectives - one 3 or more credit course
Natural Science and Mathematics - 12 credits from two different departments

I was planning to place out of some of these using AP credits. However, on the website it says:
"All courses must be taken for credit and for a grade."

Does this mean I can fulfill these requirements only by actually taking the classes for a grade? Can I not fulfill them using my AP credits? For example, I have a 5 on AP Physics, and I can get 3 credits with it. Does this mean I only have to take 9 credits in Natural Science and Mathematics? or do I actually have to take 12 credits since I did not have a "grade"?Please let me know. TIA
