Ok so heres the deal: The University of Virginia is my perfect dream school!!! I've always dreamed of being a student at UVA. Having said that, since my grades in high school weren't totally UVA standards I'am currently attending a community college in northern virginia for 1-2 yrs (hopefully 1)

My question is this: Can I transfer to the UVA school of nursing in 1 year of community college (2 semesters) if i take the right pre-nursing courses at my comm. college?? AND do I'm not sure if this is true but do i have a slightly better chance of getting in because I'am a minority (hispanic, but citizen of U.S.) and I'am a male??

you should call/e-mail the nursing school and ask them. I don't think any one of us is a nursing student here, so we wouldn't be able to give you a really good answer. The best answer comes from the source so contact the nursing school. You would need to find out if there is an equivalent course at your community college to the UVA nursing class and if certain credits will/will not transfer.

you have a slightly better chance because you are a minority. but only SLIGHTLY. honestly, don't focus on it all; this should be the last thing you worry about.

Yea, I know it's not the most imperative factor in the addmissions process, but hey... SLIGHTY is better than nothing, especially at their nursing school which probably consists predominantely of white, females. But thanks for the info, will definitely be calling their offices.

It may help for first year admissions, sure, for the reasons you just stated. For transferring, it's a different story. The spots are too few to just bring in people because of non-academic hooks. The main thing they want is stellar academics, and your pre-reqs filled. If you're borderline, or on-par with someone else, you may win, but that's unlikely. With ~50-60 offers made in the last few years, and over ~160 applicants, it's pretty cut-dry. (UVa - Transfer Admission)

However, I encourage you to apply for Fall09. The quicker you get into the Nursing School, the better. Try to make sure you're full filling pre-reqs (google UVA transfer requirements, then look on that page). If you don't make it, you can always try again the next year, but you should apply this year, regardless, unless you have financial reasons not to. Either way, I assume you'll have to take three years of nursing school here to complete reqs, so I would get here as soon as possible if you do want to go here.

shoebox10...So your saying for when transferring to UVA, admissions won't really look at minority status, and so on? You think i should of applied my senior year then? even with my not so excellent grades, although my senior yr grades were very good/decent. My grades are on an incline now. Also, if UVA see's that I'am demonstrating potential at my comm.college and work hard, will they see that and care?
Thanks for the tips!!

PS. I WILL BE APPLYING FOR TRANSFER ADMISSIONS THIS COMING JANUARY '09, WISH ME LUCK!! (i'm freaking out over this)
