UWash. Early Entrance Program

Does anyone have any information about the UW's early entrance program? I have been doing some research and it seems really interesting. It is run by the Robinson Center and allows sophs to apply to the UW, becoming freshman in college the year that they would normally be juniors in hs. I'm really interested, but the program seems very competitive and I don't want to waste my time applying if I don't have a chance :). I am an incoming soph and have about a 3.78 GPA, but with 1st semester sophomore grades it will probably go up. I had a rough 1st semester (i was struggling with an illness) and got a 3.67 ish (i forgot the exact number). The second semester raised it to a 3.9, but that was after I had dropped a class due to health reasons. It was an extra class, though, so I still took a full 6 classes. Dopedes anyone know any info about this program or have any idea what my odds are? I go to a private hs in Seattle, btw, and had been planning to do running start at a CC for my junior and senior years, but the early entrance program seems like it would be an even better opportunity. Thanks in advance :)

Hi,
Based on your position, it appears you are expressing interest in the UW Academy for Young Scholars program (admission after 10th grade). For more information on the program, you can go to: [url=UW Academy - UW Robinson Center for Young ScholarsUW Robinson Center for Young Scholars]Robinson Center UW Academy/url. I will be attending the University of Washington as an Academy for Young Scholars student this coming autumn. Though I have little direct experience with the program, as I have not yet begn classes, I can say that my experience thus far has been positive. My sister, who attended and graduated from the UW as a Transition School/Early Entrance student (admission after 8th grade), had a generally positive experience with the program. In terms of your likelihood of admission, the Robinson Center states: “For the incoming class of 2008, the average ACT composite score was 31 (range of 26-35) and the average GPA was 3.96 (range of 3.73-4.0)”. However, I do believe school difficulty/course difficulty is certainly taken into consideration when determining admissions to the program, for I attended a reasonably selective private school in Seattle where very few if any people had ~3.96 GPAs. While I don’t know what private school you attend or what its grading policy is like, if you are in the top third/quarter of your class and taking a rigorous course load, you should definitely consider applying. The admission application is rather time consuming (general application + 3-4 essays), but is definitely manageable and is certainly less time-consuming than the regular college admission process, given that you apply to several different colleges. My personal opinion is that the Academy program is greatly preferable to a running start program because you have more freedom, variety, and opportunity to explore different fields at the University of Washington as compared to a Community College. I hope I’ve been vaguely useful
If you have any more questions, either generally about the program or about my experience (it seems I’m probably coming from a similar postion to yours), I would be glad to attempt to help.

Thanks so much for the help, Anonymous! I’m really surprised I found someone on here who is knowledgeable about the early entrance programs. Like you said, the program I’m looking at is UW Academy. I pretty sure I’m going to apply, even though my chances don’t seem too great. I go to Bishop Blanchet HS, which isn’t very selective or hard or anything, so that won’t help me much. I was in two honors classes, though, and I’ll be in two next year as well. Also, I’ve been studying for the ACT, so hopefully I’ll get at least an OK score  But if I don’t get in I’m pretty sure I would just do running start then transfer to the UW, but, I definitly agree that UW Academy seems like a much better option :D. It just seems really cool! I’m already really excited for the info session and visit days, lol!
