UWC 2012 anyone?

nefark, each country has it’s own system. My understanding is that in the US, where we have a foundation that awards a full scholarship to each successful applicant, the criteia is set by the foundation as well as the UWC. Since that is unique to the US, you wouldn’t have quite the same set up in the Netherlands.

With that in mind, here is what happens in the US, which might give you a general idea of what might happen elsewhere: Some interviews are one on one and others are team building events with interviews done in groups. No one knows before they go which type of interview they will experience. I think this is to keep applicants from over-preparing, and to encourage them to just be themselves. Themes tend to be current events - and tend to be topics that are controversial.

You can learn more by googling “UWC interviews” which will lead you to descriptions applicants in past years have posted on College Confidential and other sites. If you add your own country to your search, you will be able to narrow your search and hopefully find out about experiences other Netherlanders have had.

Good luck!

My son got an interview! Whew! I was afraid his quirky personal statement might have done him in. It’ll be interesting to see where the U.S. interviews will be held. Now to wait until April…

My daughter got an interview too! How exciting. I am a librarian and it is very hard to keep quiet right now!

Congrats Apollo! We are also in the Midwest…maybe we will see you there :)

Did anyone else notice that the dates on the letter do not match up with the correct days of the week in the interview acceptance letter?

Received the email today for the US. I made it to the interview round. Everyone in the US should know by tomorrow night whether they made it or not.

Coincidentally, I’m also from the midwest. Any idea where the interview site will be?

Hi people! I’m from Singapore and am taking my GCE Os this oct/nov. I found out about UWC a year ago and have been so so so attracted by the idea! From the results of my research, it seems that uwc wants students that are very involved in their community.

My ECs only contain: member of student council & member of chinese orchestra of which even though i’m already in my forth year of it, i still dont know how to play the cello, more of cannot read scores and press the notes, cause i have good posture, LOL._. (well, i must say that i did skip the ec for more than 1 year and right now have just returned to it for two months). Whatsmore, ECs are going to be ending soon for us secondary 4 students so they can start stuffing us with academics. LOL. Oh, and I have around 100+ hrs in total of community involvement clocked for all 4 years.

Do you think I have a chance with my ECs?

The subjects im taking for Os now are EL, Higher Chinese, Com. Humanities (history + Social Studies), Com. Sci (Phys + Chem), Elementary Maths, Literature in EL, Art. Its not counted as a good subject combi in Sg:( My avg grades for last year was B3, C6, B3, A1, A2, C6, B4 respectively:( Its like a very normal score over here.

What would you people suggest I improve on to be able to not let the NC throw away my application @ first glance? Also, izzit that after you get accepted into uwc, they will give you a placement test for every subject that you choose?

Thanks alot!

@Nefark

I didn’t know there was another Dutchie on this forum, but I like it! I don’t know what type of questions they’ll ask actually, the mail says: Deze selectiedag zal voornamelijk bestaan uit een aantal groepsopdrachten. ’s Middags zal je een persoonlijk interview hebben met twee selecteurs. Aanvullende informatie over de selectiedagen ontvang je binnenkort van ons. So I’m expecting more information soon, just be yourself is my main advice :slight_smile: Where are you from actually and which class do you attend?

Good luck and have a nice vacation!

Hi there Dutchies (I love this word :D), I think your selectiedag will just be like the one we have in Germany… You don’t really have to worry about that! They will ask some questions about yourself and your application. They might be very critical and a bit nasty but that’s just to see how you react. They will probably give you some scenes like : “Imagine you share a room with… and he does… what would you do?” The group-thingie will more than likely be about some recent and controversial topic you are going to discuss… Good luck to you! Just be yourselves! When will your interview be on?

Weavingtrials, I can’t tell how old you are or what year you are in school but UWC students are generally between 16 and 17 when they start the two year course. Some are a little older. I think the entrance requirements differ from country to country so you should probably go the UWC Singapore website to get an idea of what they expect from successful candidates. If you can afford it, you might be able to attend the UWC Singapore location without going through the UWC candidate process.

I got an email yesterday saying that I got an interview!! I am so excited and I feel so lucky to have been given this opportunity. I’m from SoCal, so I probably won’t see any of you there, but good luck to everybody!

@Vitus
I am in 4th year and live in Amsterdam. What about you? Do you know btw how many people are left?
Jij ook fijne vakantie :slight_smile:

X

@nefark

I’m in the fifth year, so this world be my last chance. I have lived in Amsterdam for 12 years but moved to Naarden (yes 't Gooi, but there’s really nothing wrong with it) i’m a girl by the way, but nefark doesn’t really rings a bell: is it your name? How did you heard about uwc and what had like trickered(aangetrokken) you to apply?
I’m off to austria this Monday, so ill read your respons once i get back!
Ps do you know if youre going the 10th or the 11th?

@Apollo6
I’m 16 this year and wish to apply for next year. I have emailed to the singapore nc but until now they have not replied me, and the information given on the website is pathetically little. My house is only around a ten minute car ride from the UWC tampines campus, so theres not much point in going there as I wish to experience life and culture in other countries. Thanks (:

Good Luck, Weavingtrials. If UWC doesn’t work out, why not consider an exchange program? Does Rotary International exist in Singapore? Rotary Youth Exchange is a terrific program and very low cost.

Just to make life a little more exciting (and complicated), my son has been selected as a Yes Abroad semi-finalist, too, and the interview weekend begins the same day as his UWC interview. He may be able to get a flight to Denver after his interview in time to participate, but he may need to decline. Too bad! He would rather go to UWC than spend a year abroad in a Muslim country but he finds both ideas intriguing and both programs are so competitive that it would be nice to have opportunities to interview for both in the hope of getting one.

@Apollo6
I just went to search & sadly both programmes that you have mentioned doesn’t exist over here :frowning:
Good luck to your son ! :D

Sorry! I know Singapore is a very small country but there must be some exchange programs available. I know AFS has an office in Malaysia. Actually, some YES students come to the U.S. from Malaysia. I wonder if they work with Singaporean youth, too. Good luck!

@Vitus
No, nefark is not my name, haha. And I am a girl. I am going the 10th and you?

@weavingtrials, I know of some people who were successful from your country. They were quite amazing people. Academically they did very well and their extracurriculars were outstanding.

hi xcitrus. I am from india too. I just got an interview call a few days ago. I am very very keen on this and wanted to know, if you have got a call, what are doing to prepare for the interview.
thanks :)

Hey! I’m from India too. I just got my letter for my interview! I’m so excited. Which day is your interview?
What are you doing to prepare for the interview?
