@lunascreatures I’m exactly the same as you! Three drafts and four blanks. I have sent out only one of my recs though - reading your comment made me realise there was a second one! I think I’ll be able to think of what to write for all of them, except “how to represent the UK” That’s got me stumped :S

All five of my short answers are done… woo! Now I’m getting really anxious about my PLAN score. I got a 177 on the PSAT which is just ok. I scored in the 90-95th percentile in all subjects (I actually got the exact same score in all 3), but I think I did better on the PLAN. I’m just hoping I’ll know before I have to send in the app. Did anyone else take the PLAN?

@applesauce21 glad to be of assistance! I’m glad that the US doesn’t have that question (“represent your country”) - I’m really bad at writing about my own qualities, and though I’ve managed on our prompts, that one would stump me.

@lindzmm I took the PLAN last year, as a freshman, so I already know my results. I’m using my PSAT score instead because it’s more recent and I got a better score. When are you supposed to get your PLAN results?

@lunascreatures No idea. I felt pretty good about my score but It’s hard to know what to include on my app without knowing that score. If I did really well then I won’t include the PSAT score and if I did about the same I’ll include both I guess. I wasn’t prepared at all for the PSAT and was sick when I took it, not that that’s any excuse.

Also, Merry Christmas to anyone that celebrates it, and happy holidays to all that dont!

Hey guys,

I’m so excited to see that there is such a long thread between students interested in applying to UWC!
I am currently a First Year student at UWC-USA (Armand Hammer UWC) and will be graduating in 2014. Although I’m not from the US and therefore didn’t go through the US selection process, I’ve heard of many stories from my American co-years and I know what it’s like to apply (and get in!) to UWC. Since I’m on winter break right now, I have all the time in the world to answer your questions, so don’t hesitate to send me a message with any questions you might have! I look forward to hearing from you, and good luck with your applications.

@lindzmm Well, I hope you get the score soon! And Merry…Boxing Day back to you
@uwc2014 Thank you so much! I’ll probably take you up on that offer, once I think of a few clear questions.

@UWC2012 Thank you! I know that there are a lot of sophomores on here, including me, so I was wondering how many sophomores were accepted last year. I know that’s probably not the easiest question to answer but if you have any idea, it would be really helpful! Also, congratulations on being accepted!

Yeah, Merry Christmas! And thank you so much UWC14 - although you might regret your generosity, with all the questions I have XD

I’m stressing about the app because I have loads of A levels in two weeks which are worth about 50% of my overall AS Level in each subject >< Howeverrr I also can’t afford to slack on my UWC app!! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh

But I love this forum. My family all hate UWCs, so coming on here and seeing so many kind and supportive people, who give their time up to help other UWC applicants really helps keep my morals up - and want to get in even more, since the idea of going to a school with you guys would be awesome :D

I’m so nervous and I’m not sure I’ll make it…is there any advice you could give me that would help me to show my personality through my application? I am finding that aspect challenging, my school is in a small canadian community so I havent had much experience…and there is huge competition in my country.

One more short answer and the personal statement! woohooo! The end is in sight :D

Hey I just realized that although the word limit for the five essays is less than 150 words the actual box you put your essays in allows almost 220 words, do you guys think it would be okay to have our essays like 200 words? because it fits allow it’s technically not less than 150 words

also do you all think it is okay to use contractions in our essays?

@criver12 I’d use 150 as a guideline, not a limit. To play it safe mine are all between 140 and 150, but for a few of them I was going to keep it bit longer until I realized there was an unimportant sentence that I could cut. And contractions should be fine, I think! Just don’t use anything you wouldn’t normally use, don’t try to cut it down by combining words that don’t need to be combined. Don’t, I’d, I’ll, aren’t, they’re, etc seems fine to me.

For the UK it’s a 1500 character limit - sounds like a lot, but it’s really not haha

Hi all,

A question (I think this only applies to the US app): at which point in the application are you supposed to send in grades? Apparently both Parts B and C ask for grades, but I’m not sure when/where to access them.

Thanks!

I am so nervous, I want to go so bad, and I dont know what I am going to do with myself if my application is rejected
How to show my personality through the application?
right now, my answers look like a diary entry… not well done at all :S

@ichilove
What I’ve gathered is that Parts B and C were on the old (mostly paper) application - now, that’s part of the counselor recommendation but they haven’t updated the instructions to show this. It might we worth an email to admissions to make sure, though.

Hello Potential First Years!
Thanks, @lunascreatures for creating such a helpful and current thread. It’s great to know that many people are so passionate about pursuing the UWC mission and are applying. As an alumna of the Global Leadership Forum, UWC-USA’s short programme, I would by more than happy to answer any questions about the campus, teaching styles, or anything else.

I’m also a US applicant and was wondering, does anyone know some of the locations of last year’s interviews? Can someone also give an overview of what the day is like?
Thanks,
CarpeDiem234

@lunascreatures Thanks! Turns out I didn’t have to send an e-mail, they updated the site. [UWC-USA: US Applicants](http://www.uwc-usa.org/podium/default.aspx?t=119140) states that counselors are responsible for transcripts. I’ll have to talk to mine once we return from break, to make sure he got in the additional forms.

@CarpeDiem234 and @uwc2014 - Thanks for the offers! Everyone involved with the UWC movement, including the applicants, seems so nice. I am curious about UWC-USA’s campus - is it really like a castle?! Also, @uwc2014, how much free time are you given? My sister’s in full IB, and she always seems to be busy, but I’m curious about your experience. Plus, how strictly enforced is the schedule?

I also second CarpeDiem234’s interview question.

I’m still trying to pick a topic for the personal statement. I’m so nervous!

Like most UWC campuses, UWC-USA is fairly remote and serene. It’s divided into two parts: lower campus and upper campus. Lower campus consists of a few of the dorms, the soccer field, and some classes. There’s about a 300 or so step staircase to get to upper campus, so be prepared to do a lot of walking! Upper campus is the Montezuma Castle. It is indeed a castle! Also, there’s tons gorgeous hiking trails, a light sanctuary, and a green house, among other things.
