Hey everyone!! Wishing you all a happy new year! Hope we all end up being in a UWC in this year!
By the way, anyone over here from India?
Also, anyone over here from Mahindra United World College of India?

I wish to everybody Happy New Year, all the best in this year. Firstly, i wish you all to go to UWCs :)

Happy New Year everyone! Sorry to crash in, but i’m surprised i’m just finding this thread however a big thanks to luna for starting it up…err…although i’m late.
Lucky, all of you! My national council hasn’t released the application forms as yet. Within a few weeks was their response.

@carpediem and purplesweater - no problem! thanks for everyone who joined the thread for contributing :)

Hey, the Montezuma castle is indeed a castle, but that’s only one portion of the UWC-USA campus. We have lower campus as well, which holds all the language, science and math classes as well as 4 dorms, and the castle holds mainly humanities classes, 2 dorms, the cafeteria, and the student centre. So if you live on lower campus, you only go up to the castle for meals, student events (like parties) and your humanities classes.

And as for free time- you never feel bored at UWC. There’s always something going on, something to do, people to visit… so I wouldn’t say that we have a lot of free time, but as a first year I haven’t felt particularly stressed, either. UWC is overwhelming at times, but as long as you have good time management, you’ll be fine!

Haha, no problem! I certainly had a lot of questions when I was applying last year, so don’t hesitate.

Right now i’m just working on my transcript, ensuring all the correct credentials and such are on it, as my school allows you to check. And waiting…waiting for that form.

Hello -

I am a parent of 14 yo son. I have two questions.

1) How do you apply to mayor’s internship program ?
2) is UWC a good path to pursue medisine later on ? Werer you able to make it to uwc ?

thanks
Ram

I don’t think you could send your child to a UWC if his reason for going was to become a doctor. I’m sure many UWC alumni would make brilliant physicians, but it’s not a school which is trying to set students on a career path, more a life path. That’s not to say I think your son shouldn’t apply, but more that he should re-evaluate his motivations to make sure his thinking is in line with the UWCs morals, in case he’s got the wrong end of the stick. Hope that helps :)

I agree with applesauce21. UWC’s more about making change. I’m not saying that your son shouldn’t apply just because he wants to become a doctor, but he should want to apply because he truly wants to live according to UWC’s mission and values. As for if it is a good choice for pursuing medicine in the future, I think that UWC is a good path for any career. The IB course prepares students for any career choice, and graduates are often accepted at top universities around the world. Hope that answers your question :)

@lindzmm I know it’s been quite long since you asked for information about UWCSEA, but I keep forgetting to post a reply. Sorry!

I am willing to help you with any questions you have about Singapore, but I don’t know much about the school itself because I only found out about UWC after I left the country. I will try my best to answer any other questions that you may have though :)

Oh, and Ramapriyan, I forgot to add, here’s a link to some alumni profiles of graduates that work in medicine if you’re interested: [UWC - Medicine | UWC](http://www.uwc.org/our_impact/alumni_profiles/medicine/default.aspx)

How are you guys organizing you personal statements? I was going to do the first one (the one about an issue). I was going to try to do a 5 paragraph format, which the standard essay format, but I fear that with only 500 words it would be quite difficult and I don’t want to waste too many words on an intro and conclusion… Thoughts?

@coexistxx I’m doing the issue prompt as well, and mine is 5 paragraphs, but they’re not standard length - a short introduction to the topic, what i think about it in 3 paragraphs, and some sort of conclusion that I haven’t quite figured out yet.

@coexistxx For my personal statement, I chose the third option (influential character in a book, etc). I feel like for personal statements, it’s more important to demonstrate your writing style and present yourself well rather than try to force it into a specific type of formatting. Mine is only three paragraphs!

Hey guys! I’m almost done with my essays, look good to me. I’m freaking out about my grades, especially in math.

My mom went to Armand Hammer United World College a while ago, and she is now the head of the radiology department in Syracuse, NY. Of course, she’s been trying to get me to think about attending one of the UWC schools for years, she loved it and it was one of the best experiences of her life. I’m only a freshman in high school, so I haven’t spent too much time thinking about the application process yet. But I am definitely interested! I’m not sure what my GPA is, but I’m taking an ap course in school, along with an honors course and several online college courses. I’m doing as many clubs and activities as I can, but I don’t do any sports so I’m not sure if that’s negative in terms of the application. I haven’t done too much volunteer work as of yet, I only have like 20 hours documented, but I’m planning on doing more. I’m also very involved in music and play three instruments as long as singing and acting. I’m still a little nervous because I’m not in any honors math or science courses, but I do have above a 97 in both of these classes, and I’ve been on highest honor roll so far with no grades below a 95. If anyone is able to help me out with anything involving what I can do to make my application look better, I would appreciate it so much!! I’m considering going for my senior year, and a gap year before college, so I still have a few years to work everything out first. I’m so excited for the great opportunities that this school offers, especially in terms of experiencing new cultures. It sure helps when applying to colleges as well.

@luckygirl136

I do not think there is a finite way to make your application look better. My experience with the faculty/staff of UWC-USA showed me that they are more interested in you as a person, rather than your credentials. But, Your involvement in activities sounds great!

For the short responses, it says to keep them under 150 words, but then gives us 1400 characters to work with. If my responses stay within the character limit, but go above 150 words, is that acceptable?

@coexistxx I had the same question about my short responses, but I asked a couple of UWC students I know about whether or not that was necessary. They said that it must fit the restrictions that they list on the application. The application is made to see how well you can convey your ideas. They use the word limits to do that. Sorry! Good luck on your application!

Hey Guys!
Just wanted to make sure everyone is on the same page as me- applications are due January 10th, correct? I don’t want to miss the deadline!
