I'm a junior who has recently started worrying about college. My transcript and SAT scores look good enough for maybe a 50-50 chance at UVA, not so good for William and Mary, and nearly sure fire acceptance in to any other college in VA. So I want to major in history but assuming that I get rejected from both of those schools my next choice is VA Tech. VA Tech is not known for it's history program, in fact it has only been giving history degrees since the 1960s. Would I receive a poor history education if I did go to Tech?

Also, I plan on going to law school after obtaining a history degree. I know it's a bit early to begin planning for law school, but would it look bad on a law school application for them to see you got a history degree from VA Tech and not a school more well-known for liberal arts (I think history is a liberal art)?

If you think you have a great chance at acceptance to all schools in Virginia aside from UVA and W&M, why would you pick Tech's history department over JMU's? JMU is more liberal-artsy than Tech, and would probably offer a better history education.

JMU = 84% white. No diversity what so ever. That lack of diversity in such a southern setting would make me expect the school to be filled with racists. I'd rather go to George Mason than James Madison. Also, VA Tech has a nationally ranked football team. Gives me some school spirit. :)
